Christopher Daniels: At the crossroads of immortality and oblivion

Christopher Daniels has been a witness to a lot of wrestling history since his career started in 1993. He saw the rise of the "Attitude Era" and the Monday Night Wars, as he wrestled for WWE, WCW and ECW.

Once the latter two organizations had folded, and after a spell in WWE developmental, Daniels struck out for himself and made an immediate impact on the independent wrestling world. He wrestled for New Japan Pro Wrestling, won the "King of the Indies" tournament and otherwise traversed the globe, but ultimately, the next two decades of his career would tie Daniels to the fate and history of two companies: TNA and Ring of Honor.

Daniels was there in the formative stages of each company in 2002, and the defining moments of his career have come in these two organizations, for whom he's performed concurrently and independent of one another at various points over the last 15 years. He's had titles every step of the way, on both a tag team and singles level, but the man who will forever be known as "The Fallen Angel" has one major gap among his many career accomplishments -- a major world title.

With TNA (now Impact Wrestling) in his rear-view mirror, the now 46-year-old Daniels has the ROH world championship as his holy grail. As the company celebrates its 15th anniversary in Las Vegas on Friday night, Daniels gets another chance for that breakthrough against Adam Cole. Amidst a wave of fan support and emotion, following his victory in the ROH "Decade of Excellence" tournament and the betrayal of long-time tag team partner Frankie Kazarian to Cole's cause and the Bullet Club, it could very well be Daniels' last chance at a storybook ending...More?

Christopher Daniels Talks AJ Styles And Samoa Joe Joining WWE, WWE's Global Cruiserweight Series

"The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels has seen it all and been a little bit of everywhere after two decades in wrestling. From appearances in WWF and WCW to stints in TNA, ROH and NJPW, Daniels is a true veteran of sports entertainment.

Daniels was crucial in the prime of TNA's X-Division, and once actually got a shot at the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship. When I spoke to him recently about WWE's upcoming Global Cruiserweight series, he seemed optimistic about the idea.

"I guess I'll have to wait and see," Daniels explained. "I feel like the last couple of months for NXT have shown they're willing to think outside the box and get rid of the constraints they put on their programming back in the day in terms of their attitude towards cruiserweights. You look at some of the hirings over the past couple of months, picking up Austin Aries, giving guys Tommaso Ciampa, Johnny Gargano, Rich Swann an opportunity to excel. I look forward to the matches, knowing that a guy I hold in high regard like Zack Sabre Jr. is going to be a part of it. I'll see what they do with it. I feel like they're giving it an honest chance to get over. I think NXT is the right platform to do that."

While Daniels is under an exclusive contract with Ring of Honor and won't be participating the tournament, or in the WWE any time soon, a few of his friends that he's made history with will be. Daniels was a part of one of the greatest matches in the last 20 years when he took on AJ Styles and Samoa Joe in the main event of TNA Unbreakable 2005. Fast forward 11 years, the WWE has signed both Styles and Joe to contracts.

"I try to keep in touch with them as much as possible," Daniels told me. "I'm thrilled to see them doing well and knew they would if they were given the opportunity. I kept in contact with Joe as he was going through the process of signing with them and finding out the opportunities he was being given, it's exciting. It shows you there's a change of perception in the office there. If there's anyone that deserves it that opportunity, it was Joe. He did so much at TNA and ROH, he deserved to be seen on a grand scale. Now he's showing his worth in NXT, and he's the first guy to hold the TNA, NXT and ROH title. History is his."

Christopher Daniels Says He 'Bummed Out' That WWE Never Hired Him, Talks WWE Signing TNA Stars

Christopher Daniels joined the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Podcast this week. Daniels recently signed a long-term contract with ROH and said, at 45, he expects to finish his career there. He was also asked if he he was bothered at all seeing many of his contemporaries from ROH and TNA now in WWE, while he never got that opportunity.

"I wouldn't be human if I didn't wish that had come my way," Daniels admitted. "I certainly am proud of the guys that have gone on and done that. But that's their hard work . . . I'm not jealous of that part of it. I wish the timing had been different.

"If WWE had softened their perception of the independent scene five years earlier than they did, maybe that would have been me. When I got to TNA in 2010, their attitude seemed to be very set against that idea. At the same time, too, I feel like at the time when I might have been most appealing to the WWE in terms of character and in terms of connection I had made with the fans, I was under contract with TNA. So, to me the bad thing about it was just timing. There's nothing you can do to change that. For me to dwell on that would just be a useless exercise in futility. I'm bummed out about it, but at the same time, I'm content where I'm at."

In the interview, Daniels also discusses working the main event of the very first ROH event, taking on a leadership role in the ROH locker room, age discrimination in wrestling, Daniel Bryan's retirement and more. The Pro Wrestling Illustrated Podcast is available to be streamed at pwi-online.com.

Christopher Daniels Discusses How TNA Can Compete with WWE

Christopher Daniels was recently interviewed by Red Eye Chicago. He discussed a number of things, but here is what he said about TNA competing with WWE and what they need to do to create brand awareness:

"Well I think a lot of it has to do with just awareness of the brand, like you said. So many people, especially lapsed wrestling fans from the boom back in the late 90’s - early 2000’s, a lot of wrestling fans sort of went away. And they aren’t really aware that there is another brand now, now that WCW closed and ECW closed. A lot of people went away right after that, and they’re not really aware that there’s another brand out, other than the WWE, just sort of enjoy professional wrestling.

And the truth of the matter is sometimes it’s hard to be different from the WWE when you’re trying to gain those same viewers. Sometimes there’s a tendency to sort of follow in the footsteps of the WWE. And so it’s sort of a fine line where you want to be recognizable as professional wrestling but you also want to set yourself apart from what some people consider the standard of professional wrestling, which is the WWE.

So I think the challenge for us as individuals is try to stand out. Try to get people talking. Try to get that word of mouth out about our product. Not just ourselves but the entire roster as a whole. Trying to get people talking about the differences in our talent. The differences in terms of the stories we’re telling in the ring. Trying to get some buzz about the things that we’re doing."

Fallen Angel Raises Bar in Ring of Honor

The Fallen Angel Christopher Daniels ended last year in main events for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. That changed in the weeks that followed when TNA ventured into a new creative direction.

In March, the veteran was released from his TNA contract. Daniels saw this as an opportunity to return to his old stomping grounds in the Philadelphia-based Ring of Honor.

"These are things that happen, and you kind of got to roll with the punches. When I got the call in March that they weren't going to use me anymore. Again, I was disappointed. I thought it was a bad decision on their part, but it was a decision that they made. You try to roll with the punches and land on your feet."

"I was fortunate to have a good relationship with Jim Cornette and with Adam Pearce, who was at Ring of Honor at the time and with [ROH owner] Cary Silkin. That was literally the first phone call I made was to get in touch with them and see if there was a position for me or to see if there was any interest in me rejoining Ring of Honor. Luckily, the answer was yes."...More?
