Stephanie McMahon Says The Purpose Of Her Character Is Getting Others Over, Returning To The Ring

Stephanie McMahon participated in a Facebook Q&A this afternoon. You can check out the highlights below:

- She says her favorite thing about being in the WWE is getting to interact with the fans.

- Her favorite promo was the one she cut on Shane McMahon while getting the Legacy of Excellence Award, saying it was 'challenging.' Getting to slap Roman Reigns was also 'impactful and challenging.'

- Brie Bella 'packs a wallop' in her slap, according to Stephanie.

- Stephanie says it was a privilege to be in the ring with Dusty Rhodes and said that he challenged her in the ring on the mic. She says it was a moment that she'll never forget.

- She wanted to write a book to let people know what is so special about the WWE, and wanted to entice and entertain those people who haven't found it yet.

- She's excited to share her moments with Andre, dinner with wrestlers, her mom making Mr. T liver, and her love story with Triple H.

- She says she enjoyed her programs with Trish Stratus, Brie Bella, Lita and Jacqueline Moore. Having the privilege to get in the ring without being a wrestler is an honor to her. She says the decision to get back in the ring isn't up to her, it's up to the 'decision maker.' She says that as long as it helps get somebody over, that's the ultimate goal of her character.

- Being a heel is her preference over being a babyface. Heels getting their comeuppance is her favorite part, according to her. She cited Sable and Chris Jericho as doing that.

- Stephanie McMahon says the reason that she and Triple H train at midnight is because it's the only time they really have to train.

- She briefly considered a career as a dance choreographer and a marine biologist.

- She really enjoys helping grow the brand, and says she's wanted to be involved in the WWE her entire life.

- One of her biggest takeaways from the Eisenhower Fellowship is that people are all the same, regardless of country. She says it shouldn't have been that much of a surprise, but it was.

- Stephanie spends her free time with her children and husband doing movie night or game night.

Dusty Rhodes statue unveiled at WrestleMania Axxess

The late WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes was officially ushered into immortality at WrestleMania Axxess with the unveiling of a bronze, life-size statue of “The American Dream.”

The WWE Universe in attendance at the first night of WrestleMania Axxess, alongside the entire Rhodes family and NXT roster, were the first to witness the statue’s presentation, which drew the raucous adulation of the crowd in Dallas’ Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

“I looked to him as a mentor and an inspiration and a creative force behind the scenes. I cannot put into words how much he meant to me and how much he meant to this industry,” said WWE World Heavyweight Champion Triple H, who emceed the presentation after an introduction from Corey Graves and Tom Phillips.

“[He’s] already a Hall of Famer in every way possible,” said The Game of Rhodes, who, along with Triple H, helped to mentor the Superstars and Women of NXT to stardom. “This is just another step to immortality.”

“The American Dream’s” entire family shared the ring with The Game at the time of the statue’s unveiling, which Triple H performed alongside Rhodes’ sons, Dustin and Cody.

“It’s been a tough year for our family,” Dustin said after the unveiling. “Dad was an amazing man, but to us he was just ‘Pops.’ And he was a common man who became ‘The American Dream’ because he had a dream and he captured his dream. I want to say thank you to the fans who supported our father one hundred and ten percent over the years and continue to support Cody and myself.”

“Right now,” he continued, “I can guarantee you Dad is in Heaven getting funky like a monkey with the angels, looking down, very proud of all this.”

Brandi Rhodes, who performs as WWE ring announcer Eden, followed up.

“I only had the opportunity to be one of Dusty’s daughters for about two years,” she said, before thanking the rest of the family for allowing her to share in their moment. “It’s an awesome thing that he was able to be shared with all of us collectively.”

An emotional Cody closed out the proceedings with a pair of stories. One was a fun anecdote about Rhodes’ WWE Hall of Fame induction. (Question: “Who’d you ever beat?” Answer: “Everyone on that stage, baby.”) The second was a more heartfelt one about the elder Rhodes’ time running a promotion and calling up to offer condolences to a performer whose father had passed and made time to ask about what kind of man he’d been.

“Dusty Rhodes was famous for talking but he was a hell of a listener,” said Cody. “If you come to this statue, take a picture. Don’t be shy. Talk to him. Tell him how your day is going. Tell him who you think is going to win at WrestleMania. Tell him everything, because I have to believe that this special group of people that comes to WrestleMania, comes to Axxess, comes to NXT, people that love sports-entertainment, that echoes in heaven and earth.”

As Triple H departed to leave the Rhodes family alongside their father figure’s monument, the strains of Dusty’s theme song, the iconic “Common Man Boogie,” played “The American Dream” off into eternity.

Cody Rhodes And Goldust To Present Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Trophy, Cody Rhodes Comments

Cody Rhodes spoke to TribLive this week, and announced that he and Goldust would be presenting the trophy to the winners of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Rhodes noted that he hasn't appeared on WWE television in that role in quite a while since adopting the Stardust character in 2014.

"It's great though that you ask, because the Dusty Rhodes tag tournament taking place in NXT is something he would really be proud of because of all the platforms it gives to talent, including independent talent that came in for a shot to win the Dusty Rhodes tag tournament. I will actually be there myself, (as) me — for the first time a while on WWE programming — Cody Rhodes and my brother will be there to present the trophy, which I'm looking forward to seeing," said Rhodes.

Stardust has been Rhodes' main character for well over a year now. Many speculated he would ditch the gimmick after the passing of his father, but he posted a passionate response, saying that performing in the role was an homage to Dusty.

WWE has two more quarterfinal matchups in the tournament before the semifinals are set. Both the semifinal and final rounds will take place at NXT TakeOver: Respect on October 7. As of now, The Mechanics, Hype Bros, Enzo & Cass, Gable & Jordan, Baron Corbin & Rhyno, as well as Finn Balor & Samoa Joe remain in the tourney.

William Regal announces NXT’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament

During the historic NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn broadcast on WWE Network, NXT General Manager William Regal announced that NXT will be paying tribute to the late WWE Hall of Famer “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes with a tag team tournament to be held in his honor.

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will feature the best of NXT’s past, present and future, duking it out for tag team supremacy, with the finals taking place at the next NXT TakeOver, live on WWE Network on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Rhodes himself was no stranger to tag team competition during his illustrious career. The American Dream was a multiple-time tag team champion, holding titles with the likes of Dick Murdoch, Dick Slater and “Raging Bull” Manny Fernandez. Rhodes and Nikita Koloff also survived through a field of 24 teams to win the 1987 Jim Crockett, Sr. Memorial Cup.

Though he made an incredible impact inside the squared circle, The American Dream made, perhaps, an even greater impact during his time with NXT. Rhodes served as a mentor to the entire NXT roster, helping them to find the Superstar or Diva within. It is because of his profound contributions to the future of WWE that NXT is honoring his legacy with this tournament, ensuring that The American Dream will live on.

Finn Balor Recalls Meeting Vince McMahon for the First Time, Talks Winning the NXT Title, Dusty Rhodes’ Tutelage, HHH’s Leadership, More

WWE NXT Champion Finn Balor recently spoke with Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso to hype next week’s NXT Takeover Brooklyn special, and below are some interview highlights:

On meeting Vince McMahon for the first time:

“The first official meeting I had with Vince McMahon was in San Jose two days before WrestleMania,” said Bálor. “I was wrestling against Neville in the main forNXT San Jose. Neville had just got to the ring, and I was standing behind the curtain ready to make my entrance. I could hear Neville’s music tapering off, and I heard a call, ‘Finn! Finn!’ I turned around and it was Hunter. He said, ‘Have you met Vince?’

“So I went over and Vince’s head popped out from behind the curtain and said, ‘How are you doing, son?’ I said, ‘Hello, sir,’ and shook his hand. As I shook his hand, the heartbeat of my music started and I started, ‘That’s my cue, gotta go.’”

On Triple H’s leadership:

“With regards to what you see on TV, you’re really only seeing the tip of the iceberg with Paul Levesque,” said Bálor about the man better known to wrestling fans as Triple H. “He has been an incredible leader here for the people at NXT, and not just for me, but he has time for everyone. He motivates people and inspires. He’s someone that is very approachable, very down to earth, and full of new and alternative ideas. He’s helped me adapt to my situation, which has been very different with learning the working style of WWE and life here in America.”

On Dusty Rhodes’ tutelage:

“Dusty would say, ‘Finn, your work in the ring is up here, but you’re talking is down here – you’ve got to balance them out,’” said Bálor. “He was always very straight to the point, and we had a great relationship together. I remember him saying one time, ‘Prince, you know I heard them talking about you before you came in here, and goddamn, I thought Lou Thesz was gonna walk in that door the way they talk about your work.’ I’ll never forget that, and I was very lucky to work with Dusty. He helped me incredibly with my communication, as he called it, and I learned a lot of lessons with him. ‘The Dream’ was someone who filled me with confidence the first time I walked in the door.”

On winning the NXT Title in Japan:

“That whole night was memorable for much more than winning the NXT championship.” Said Bálor. “Japan was a place that became my second home. That venue [Sumo Hall] is where I watched my first New Japan show and wrestled my last New Japan match. It was a year after I said goodbye to so many friends, and the fans were almost like family there, and I wasn’t sure if I’d ever see them again.

“To come back with WWE a year later to wrestle in the NXT championship match in a sold-out Sumo Hall against Kevin Owens, who came into NXT at almost the same time as me–and we became very close, experienced a lot of the same struggles–live on the WWE Network, the story couldn’t have been written any better.

Hulk Hogan And Dusty Rhodes Scene To Be Edited From Upcoming WWE Movie, More On Another Change

The Hulk Hogan scandal has caused WWE Studios' to remove a Hogan scene from the Celebrity Death Pool movie that stars David Hasselhoff and Ken Jeong.

PWInsider reports that a piece of Hogan material was also in the upcoming WWE - Scooby Doo animated movie. Hogan was set to appear in scenes alongside an animated Dusty Rhodes and those will obviously have to be edited now. Hopefully they can just replace Hogan and not have to nix the Dusty scene altogether.

Regarding the Hogan scene in Celebrity Death Pool, apparently it was the opening sequence of the movie so it will definitely have to be re-done.

Flair, Rhodes have lessons for wrestling offspring

Famed pro wrestler Ric Flair has been visiting Tampa Bay a lot lately, to see a woman.

WWE fans familiar with Flair’s roguish reputation might figure he’s dating an exotic dancer here.

Truth is, he’s stepping out of character with this relationship by playing the role of father to a daughter who happens to be following in his footsteps.

The Charlotte, N.C., resident known as “The Nature Boy” resides in Indian Rocks Beach when visiting his 27-year-old daughter Ashley who is training to be the next star of World Wrestling Entertainment at WWE’s Performance Center in Orlando.

Flair comes to Tampa Bay to be near her. She is his daughter, he explained, and he misses her.

“I tell everyone in the world that I have always been the best father I could be and that I was the worst husband,” Flair said with a laugh rooted in his many divorces.

“Wooo!” he exclaims, his trademark shout.

Is the 64-year-old Flair concerned that Ashley has chosen such a potentially hazardous career path?

Well, he worries she carries baggage.

“There will be added pressure on her,” he said, “because she is my daughter.”

There’s no telling whether Ashley sees the relationship as a plus or minus. WWE prohibits trainees from doing interviews.

But Cody Rhodes has some opinions on the subject.

The legend of his father, the good guy Dusty Rhodes, was born in the wrestling halls of Tampa in the 1970s, and by the time he retired, had spread across the world.

When he broke into the WWE, the fans didn’t want to see “Cody Rhodes,” they wanted to see “Dusty Rhodes Junior.”

Nostalgic, they were looking to satisfy their longing for the days when his father was king.

“A lot of people preferred me to pander to those fans,” Cody Rhodes said. “They wanted me to dye my hair blonde like my dad, do his moves like the jab and the elbow, and talk like him.”

But Rhodes said he was warned by wrestling veterans that copying his father would make him an instant star at the cost of career success.

Nostalgia has a shelf life, they told him, and “Dusty Junior” would grow stale.

So he kept his hair black. He stayed away from his father’s signature moves. He played the villain.

It made for a longer journey, Rhodes acknowledges. In the beginning, many fans were upset he didn’t channel his famous father. He had to work to win them over. And he succeeded, wrestling today as one of the WWE’s top stars.

Still, for every Cody Rhodes there are a handful of second-generation wrestlers who failed because they couldn’t escape their fathers’ shadows, he said...More?
