Update on the Sin Cara WWE Character

WWE may have parted ways with Luis Ignascio Urive Alvirde, the real Sin Cara, on Monday by informing him just a few hours before RAW. We're still waiting on confirmation of his departure.

Hunico will be working as Sin Cara going forward but may not be behind the mask permanently as there's already talk of bringing someone up from NXT to play the character.

WWE chose not to kill off the Sin Cara character completely because his merchandise has done well and there's a feeling that they have built up a character that pays into the colorful personality of WWE. The feeling is that the character didn't fail but the performer who played the character failed.

Update on Sin Cara’s Future in WWE, Who Will Play Him?, Hunico News, Unhappiness with Mistico

The original Sin Cara, the lucha libre star known as Mistico in Mexico, did NOT work last night's Raw broadcast as Sin Cara, but rather Hunico dawned the mask and was working as the character he has played in WWE in the past.

In an update to this developing story, PWInsider.com reports the decision was made within WWE to move forward with Hunico as Sin Cara, and last night was somewhat of a re-introduction of the character as he got a big win over Alberto Del Rio, and WWE went back to using the old Sin Cara lighting for the bout.

The original Sin Cara, known as Mistico in Mexico, is currently at home in Mexico and the feeling in WWE is that he will not be brought back to the company and not re-signed when his deal expires. This has yet to be confirmed, however.

There has been an unhappiness with Mistico as Cara within WWE, and it established itself right from the get-go when Cara made his WWE debut. The feeling in the company is that he underachieved, did not bring his star power with him to WWE from Mexico, was too hurt too often, and carried himself backstage in WWE as a bigger star than he actually was. Because he was Triple H's first signing, however, there was a lot of pressure on Cara to make an impact in WWE.

In what's a very ironic situation, additionally, there was a story line battle between Hunico and Mistico for the Sin Cara name in WWE, and in real life, Hunico was actually given the name Mistico in Mexico before Mistico was given the name, so the roles have completely reversed in WWE.

Sin Cara/Mistico Update

Earlier this week, during the Smackdown spoilers, we noted that WWE had to film a match between Sin Cara and Heath Slater twice due to a number of moves being botched during the initial taping in Calgary, Alberta Canada.

PWInsider.com has confirmed that it was actually WWE developmental talent Hunico working as Cara in both matches. The original Cara was at the event and dressed to wrestle, but management opted not to use him on TV. It's most interesting he wasn't used, as he was free and clear from his WWE Wellness Suspension.

WWE sources are indicating that the original Sin Cara (Mistico) was sent home from the Calgary Smackdown taping after meeting with WWE officials. Mistico left the building before the tapings ended.

Going forward, sources claim that Hunico will exclusively portray the Sin Cara character, which WWE wants to maintain as its been very popular among kids and in merchandise sales.

The expectation is for the artist formerly known as Mistico to depart WWE, but nothing has been 100% confirmed on that front.

Rumor Mill - Sin Cara's Future with WWE

Super Luchas is reporting that Mistico has left WWE and Hunico was told he would be working as Sin Cara at the WWE Mexico tapings in October.

Sources are claiming two different stories. One, that Hunico will play Sin Cara until the original Cara can return and then they will feud. The other is that Mistico is not being brought back after all and Hunico will remain as Sin Cara.

There are people within WWE, and that work with WWE on promotions, that are waiting for a final word from company officials on the future of the Sin Cara character going forward. They are worried that the new person playing Sin Cara will be pushed and not get over like Mistico. If they merchandise him for big plans down the line, it could turn out that they have backed a dud.

Within Mexico, people are worried that fans will see the new Sin Cara as a fraud. Many of WWE's licensees saw huge money in Sin Cara merchandise aimed at the Mexican market.

Future Plans for WWE Star Sin Cara

The character of Sin Cara returns this week on WWE Smackdown. The individual that was planned to and did play the character at the tapings on 8/9 in Sacramento, CA of the returning Sin Cara was believed to have been Jorge Arias. Arias performs for WWE in Florida Championship Wrestling as Hunico. Luis Ignascio Urive Alvirde is the name of the man originally playing Sin Cara and who wrestled under the name Mistico in Mexico.

Alvirde is coming close to completing his 30 day suspension with WWE for failing a drug test back in early June involving steroids. According to The Wrestling Observer, Arias playing the Sin Cara character could be turned into a storyline where the original Sin Cara(Alvirde) comes back and its revealed that Arias is an imposter. This would then set up a feud between the two which could be carried in to the WWE's tour in Mexico this fall.
