Sting Comments On His WrestleMania Match With Triple H

Sting talked about the match in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated:

“WrestleMania is a great memory, too,” said Sting. “I know so many fans have said to me, ‘You should have won that match.’ But when you think about that WrestleMania, what do you remember about it? Hulk, Hall, Nash, and DX, that was surreal. I hope that’s what people remember.”

Sting on WWE Hall of Fame induction, WrestleMania match with Triple H, More

Sting was recently interviewed by Sports Illustrated's Extra Mustard. Below are a couple of highlights:

Losing to Triple H at WrestleMania 31:

"People took the loss personally, but in this business, you have to learn real quick not to take anything that personally. For me, it was a memory just being in Levi Stadium in California, my home state, with that crowd there."

Planning to still appear at select independent wrestling shows:

"I'm going to kick back. I'll pick and choose some events, but I won't be traveling as much. These grassroots shows remind me of my humble beginnings–even the smell of the building reminds me when I started. It's an honor to still be in front of the fans."

Sting also discussed being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, Ric Flair doing the induction, having DX and the nWo together at WrestleMania 31 and more. You can read the full interview by clicking here.

Sting Speaks Out On His Current WWE Status, Reveals Who He Wanted to Face at WrestleMania 32, Did He Undergo Neck Surgery?, More

WWE.com recently spoke with Sting about his upcoming WWE Hall of Fame induction, and below are some highlights.

Sting revealed during the interview that he did not undergo surgery following the neck injury he sustained during his match against Seth Rollins at WWE Night of Champions last year. Sting revealed he spoke with 2 neurologists, one in Houston and WWE’s Dr. Joseph Maroon, and both told him he was not having the side effects commonly associated with his type of injury. He said as of now he is feeling completely normal.

WWE.COM: It had been reported that you were diagnosed with spinal stenosis. Is that diagnosis now inaccurate?

STING: I am not saying that is inaccurate. I’m agreeing there probably is spinal stenosis or cervical spinal stenosis. I have had certain doctors tell me, “You know, so many athletes of all ages, they’ve got this. They deal with it to some degree or another.” I had one doctor here tell me, “You’re fine, you’re okay — you don’t have anything to worry about.” And then wrestlers say, “I’d see this doctor.” “No, I’d see this one over there.” I’m telling you, it’s just craziness. So I’m thinking, as long as I’m feeling good, why am I going to do anything? And the one thing everyone has said is don’t go under the knife unless you absolutely have to.

WWE.COM: Had you not had this injury setback last September, do you think we would have you seen performing at WrestleMania this year? Or, is that just too tough a question to answer because of all the variables?

STING: Oh no, it’s an easy one to answer: Yes. If I had my way, yes, of course. I would have loved to have done one more WrestleMania and I would have called it quits at that point. The Undertaker match — that’s what I wanted to do.

WWE.COM: Had there been any early discussions prior to the injury of what your role could be at WrestleMania 32? Or, was it just something that you had in your mind?

STING: Yes, it was in my mind, of course, but everyone knew that I definitely wanted to have that one match. And, of course, WrestleMania would have been the place to do it. But, I got hurt and the rest is history.

Sting Retiring From Wrestling ... Neck's Too Jacked Up

Sting's wrestling career is over ... TMZ Sports has learned.

Long story short ... the wrestling legend messed up his neck real bad at his "WWE Night of Champions" match against Seth Rollins back in September -- and was never able to recover.

Sources connected to Sting tell us he was evaluated by several doctors who all agree -- it's just too risky for the wrestler to get back in the squared circle ... so, he's decided to hang up his singlet.

We're told the 56-year-old was formally diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis -- a condition affecting the nerves that can result in extreme pain and discomfort.

In fact, it's the same condition that forced fellow WWE superstar Edge to retire in 2011.

Our sources tell us Sting may make his official announcement next month at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony in Texas ... but we're told it's a done deal.

As far as Sting's future -- it's up in the air. We're told Sting is open to a non-physical role with the company ... but we're told no formal offer has been made.

Sting was a legend in the ring ... rising to superstardom in the late '80s before becoming the face of the WCW and a huge fan favorite in the WWE.

Lex Luger Talks His Relationship With Vince McMahon, Sting's WWE Run, WWE Departure Regrets

On episode 101 of The Ross Report, legendary professional wrestling broadcaster Jim Ross spoke with 'The Total Package' Lex Luger. Among other things, Luger talked about his relationship with Vince McMahon and he shared his thoughts Sting's WWE run.

During the podcast, Luger was asked about his relationship with McMahon. Luger admitted that the two had a very close relationship at one point and regrets how he handled his WWE departure. Luger said he did not handle leaving WWE to return to WCW with the honesty and integrity that he should have.

"We actually got along very well. We used to work out together. He had me over [at] the swimming pool at his house and made us tuna fish sandwiches. I think that my unannounced return to WCW, I think in the way I handled that, without giving notice and everything, which, of course, in retrospect now, I never would have done that if we had do overs in life, right Jim? I never would have handled it that way. But the way I did that, really, I felt hurt him deeply [and] personally, as much as anything. And we had a very good relationship. He really gave me great opportunities while I was there [in WWE] and I think he was truly shocked when I walked out there at Mall of America [on WCW Monday Nitro] and didn't even give him the courtesy of a phone call. No doubt about it."

Luger claimed that he and McMahon have remained cordial and McMahon would periodically check in on Luger to see how he was doing and ask whether he needed anything.

"We spoke a couple of times. We've bumped into each other at the airport and he's, of course, very polite. He shook my hand and even to show you what kind of guy he is, he checked up on me at my worst times through a mutual friend." Luger added, "so that shows you a lot about his character and what Vince McMahon is all about."

When asked for his thoughts on Sting's move to WWE, Luger stated that he would have liked his longtime friend have had a better win-loss record in WWE, but Luger remains happy for Sting.

"Sting has had such an iconic career, as they say, and he's such a great personal friend to me and he always was, no matter what, even through the worst of times. What a friend." Luger continued, "I'm so thankful for his friendship. I was very, very excited for him to go there [to WWE]. No matter if he won or lost, I thought, 'what a great way to cap off and finish just an amazing career'. Not too many guys have had a career like him and I was and still am very excited that he made the decision to get involved [with WWE] and have some matches in WWE. It was about the only thing he hadn't done."

In addition to these topics, Luger discussed his present health status, his run with The Four Horsemen, and more. Click here for the podcast.

Scott Hall Comments on Sting’s WWE Experiences

“I was there and obviously involved in his match at WrestleMania last year. We’re rehearsing the match in Cali last year at Levi Stadium, and it’s the Kliq and the New Age Outlaws out there, and we all know each other. And then there’s Sting, who doesn’t know anybody. He’s an outsider. I just think he never felt comfortable there. Being hurt was answered prayer for him–just let it end.

You need to remember that Vince is never going to go with something he didn’t create. But we didn’t get anything done at the rehearsal the night before, so WrestleMania day, there were tents in the parking lot set up with rings for rehearsal. So we’re all in there again, and I’m next to Hulk on the ring apron and Triple H is going over the match and then he goes, ‘OK, he’ll break the sledgehammer, then I’ll hit him with the sledgehammer, and cover him, 1-2-3.’ I looked at Hulk, and Hulk looked at me, and I was thinking, ‘Sting, what kind of lawyer do you have, bro? You’re coming in the door doing a job? You weren’t even guaranteed to go over?’ That’s Vince just reminding you who won, even if he’s going to make money the other way.”

Sting Reveals Why He Lost To Triple H At WrestleMania 31

Sting revealed on his newly released "Into The Light" documentary that he lost to Triple H at WrestleMania 31 earlier this year because it is "the right thing to do" in your last match.

This thinking is a harp back to an old school mentally that you should put your opponent over in the way to go out in your last match.

Throughout the documentary, Sting says that he thinks WrestleMania is his last wrestling match. His deal since recording this footage has clearly been restructured, as he faced Seth Rollins at the Night of Champions event this year.

Goldberg: ‘I Recently Spoke With Triple H About A Return’, More

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Goldberg revealed he spoke to Triple H about a possible WWE return but doesn’t think it worked out well. Here are highlights:

On never being one to back down from a fight, even with Vince McMahon: “[Hulk] Hogan once said to me, ‘Hey brother, you’re going to have to play the game. If Vince calls you in the middle of the night to get on a plane, you’re going to have to do it.’ I said to him, ‘You obviously don’t know me.’”

On Sting getting him into the business: “Sting was the guy who changed my mind. He and Lex Luger used to own a gym called Main Event Fitness in Atlanta. When I was with the Falcons, I used to work out there. I would have never imagined in a trillion years that I would have followed this path, but what made the decision realistic for me was the way Sting carried himself. When I met Sting, and observed him leading his family, business, and social life, it was completely different than what I’d ever seen in the past. I thought, ‘You know what? I can do this.’ So I bought thousands of dollars of old tapes trying to perfect moves that nobody had ever done before. I saw something that I liked, then I’d change it and make it my own.”

On WWE trying to dismiss his impact on wrestling: “That’s the way I feel. I’m surely not going to be somebody who pounds his chest and professes I was somebody who couldn’t be replaced, but I think I made a difference. For that character, nobody could do it better. So to not get the credit for the impact that I helped make is frustrating.”

On a recent talk with Triple H: “I had a conversation with Paul [Levesque] recently and I said, ‘Listen, I’m willing to put everything aside. If you guys want to sit down and make some money and have some fun, then let’s do it. My son wants to see me wrestle, and I’m willing to put all the bad feelings aside. If you guys want to move forward and do this thing the right way, then let’s talk.’ And that’s the way it ended. There’s nothing there. Truthfully, I don’t even think they want me to come, period. I’m just not one of them. The fact that I’m not far outweighs the financial gain, which they truly may not even believe is there. And I’m good with that. I’m absolutely fine with that.”

On WWE possibly inducting him into the WWE Hall Of Fame: “I don’t have a time limit and age is just a number for me. If the Hall of Fame presents itself, then I’ll do it in a heartbeat. But it’s not something where I sit here and go, ‘Man, I wish the WWE would induct me in the Hall of Fame.’ I don’t think about what I would say in my speech or who would induct me. I don’t think about that, by no stretch of the imagination.”

Sting challenged Triple H to a match at WrestleMania

Triple H wasted no time pontificating about what he thought was Sting’s motivation for coming to WWE. Finally face-to-face with the individual who has caused The Authority a great deal of strife since Survivor Series, The Game discussed Sting’s legacy, citing WWE’s purchase of WCW and his own legacy overshadowing The Stinger’s. With that, the WWE COO left the face-painted franchise of WCW with a simple ultimatum. Sting could turn around and walk away and Triple H would ensure Sting’s legacy remain in-tact through WWE Network, DVDs, action figures, video games and even the WWE Hall of Fame.

Conversely, Sting could remain in the ring and Triple H would make him sorry he ever set foot in WWE. The former WCW Champion remained expressionless, steadfast in his silence and The Game realized there was only one way for the situation to go.

Attacking The Vigilante initially proved to be a mistake, Sting beat Triple H to the punch, but The Cerebral Assassin took down his adversary and unleashed the rage that has been pent up since Survivor Series. With Sting reeling, The King of Kings reached under the ring and retrieved his signature sledgehammer. As he re-entered the ring, he was stopped in his tracks as Sting’s legendary black baseball bat made its first appearance in WWE.

With the very weapon that took out The nWo on numerous occasions pressed firmly under Triple H’s chin, The Game was backed into the corner and forced to drop his sledgehammer. Sting then made his own ultimatum, pointing to the WrestleMania sign, issuing the challenge the WWE Universe has been waiting for.

Sting turned to leave and The Cerebral Assassin attacked but was quickly taken down by the bat. Bringing The Game back to his feet, The Stinger put him down once more with the Scorpion Death Drop.

Moments after the confrontation, it was announced that at WrestleMania, not only will Sting battle Triple H in a veritable dream match, but the icon of WCW will compete inside a WWE ring for the first time ever.

Rumor Mill - Sting And Triple H Rehearsing Their ‘WrestleMania’ Match At WWE Performance Center

Sting is set to confront Triple H this Sunday at WWE’s Fast Lane pay-per-view, but it appears that the two of them will be face-to-face before Sunday’s show, as Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has reported that Sting and Triple H are not only rehearsing their WrestleMania match at the WWE Performance Center, but they’re also going over their face-to-face confrontation that will take place this Sunday.

Throughout Sting’s professional wrestling career, there have been a lot of people who have come out and called Sting a “spot misser,” claiming that Sting — especially during his TNA run — would constantly forget spots, and even miss spots during matches. Sting’s work has been criticized as well, as some people in the business say that he’s not capable of carrying a bad worker to a good match, which is why he’s wrestling Triple H at WrestleMania instead of The Undertaker, as people within WWE feel — especially after last year’s WrestleMania– that age has finally caught up to The Undertaker, and it has greatly affected his work in the ring.

Sting’s very first WWE match will be at the biggest event in the history of professional wrestling — WrestleMania– against a WWE legend, in front of the biggest crowd he’s ever performed for. That’s a lot of pressure. Not to mention that Sting is in his mid-50’s, and this will likely be his one-and-only WWE match. So, WWE, Triple H, and Sting are rehearsing it in advance to assure that it will be good, or at least memorable.

When Sting steps through the ropes at WrestleMania 31, it will have been well over a year since his last professional wrestling match. So, the rehearsals likely are to not only ensure that the match is good, but to make sure Sting knocks off all of the ring-rust, and is in good shape for his match with Triple H, because it’ll likely be between 15 and 20 minutes long.

It’s very likely that Sting and Triple H will do something physical at this Sunday’s Fast Lane, which is why they’re working out their segment at the WWE Performance Center. Sting is also set to appear on at least two more episodes of Monday Night RAW after Fast Lane to build to his match with Triple H at WrestleMania.
