Lutz's Blog: Daniel Bryan's push will test Triple H's influence on the WWE product

By Jeffrey Lutz

A power struggle is under way on WWE television featuring Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. It's a mostly pointless story line so far that apparently won't conclude until WrestleMania 30 in about seven months.

The angle has one redeeming quality, however. It's the remarks each participant has had about Daniel Bryan and the wisdom -- or lack thereof -- of pushing him to main-event level and handing him a match with John Cena at SummerSlam. It's interesting because it's probably real. Stephanie is stuck in the middle between her husband, Triple H, and her father, who of course thinks Bryan lacks the physical attributes and character makeup to be elevated to that level.

The only person sticking up for Bryan is Triple H. It's odd because Bryan is the type of performer Triple H's character -- and maybe even his real-life persona -- would make fun of and belittle for the same reasons Vince has had little positive to say about Bryan on television. I think Triple H's on-air opinions are real, too, because as a WWE executive he has plenty of incentive to help Bryan become as big of a star as possible. If Bryan has a significant run with the WWE Championship and stays at the top of the card for the foreseeable future, he'll likely have Triple H and his leadership toward new directions to thank.

That isn't to say, of course, that Triple H hasn't been involved in WWE booking in the past, because he definitely has. It's long been documented that he sat in on creative meetings when he was a full-time wrestler, and early in his career he was influenced by other members of "The Kliq" in encouraging his future father-in-law to push some wrestlers and pump the brakes on others. Ultimately, though, booking decisions weren't and aren't made unless Vince McMahon makes them. More people may have his ear now than in the past, but everything that happens on WWE television is approved by him.

McMahon, for all of the credit he deserves for attempting to capitalize on the popularity of Bryan that he probably doesn't understand, still seems determined to force Bryan to back his way into SummerSlam. Bryan accepted a WWE Championship match without having earned it. Some would call that opportunistic, but it doesn't line up with the values of a character who has cast himself as a "weak link" and been eager to prove to everyone that the description didn't fit. It's essentially a heel move to take a WWE Championship match without having earned it.

There is still plenty of time until SummerSlam, of course, but so far Bryan doesn't look strong. He failed to win the Money in the Bank All-Stars match, where he was taken out of by a mid-card wrestler, Curtis Axel in an angle that didn't feature a follow-up the next night on Raw, much less a payoff. McMahon may be testing Bryan's popularity to see if it is maintained through his character's difficulties, but it is of course more likely that he doesn't see money in Bryan and doesn't see a "larger-than-life" personality within a 5-foot-8 technical wrestler.

"Larger than life" is a term, at least within WWE, that has become passe. One reason for that is that wrestlers often use their real names, or at least names that could pass as real. "One Man Gang" or "Earthquake" sound a lot more intimidating than Mark Henry or Brodus Clay or Wade Barrett. Also, a wrestler's size has nothing to do with being larger than life.

The story featuring C.M. Punk, Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar includes three larger-than-life characters even though only Lesnar fits the traditional description. Punk and Heyman transcend their perceived limitations with quality, consistent performances. Doing great work and being unique is what makes a wrestler larger than life. Bryan does great work and is unique, so he's larger than life. That's all it takes.

Triple H, I believe, understands that. In his role as a WWE executive, he has scouted and signed talent of assorted physical attributes. For every ex-football player WWE has its eye on, Triple H has brought in a wrestler like Sin Cara or Sami Zayn who don't fit the conventional mold of true superstars. Getting away from the performance aspect of the business has likely opened Triple H's eyes to the numerous and varying qualities that make a wrestler popular and appreciated among fans.

Triple H also probably has something invested emotionally in Bryan, who was trained by Triple H's best friend, Shawn Michaels. Besides being educated by a legend in the business, like Triple H was by Killer Kowalski, I imagine Triple H identifies himself somewhat with Bryan, who appreciates and studies the history of the business and has a true passion for wrestling. On paper, Triple H and Bryan are nothing alike, but in that sense they share plenty of common ground.

The future of WWE is in great hands, it appears, with Triple H. His negotiations have helped bring past legends like Bruno Sammartino and Ultimate Warrior. His dedication toward finding the stars of tomorrow and refining the stars of today helped lead to the opening of the WWE Performance Center earlier this month. His enthusiasm for wrestling will attract talent toward WWE from all walks of life.

There is only one thing left for Triple H, the executive to do -- have the final say on a WWE booking decision. Daniel Bryan offers him that chance. The fans want it and Triple H seems to want it, too. Hopefully Vince McMahon is listening and he passes along that responsibility.

WWE PPV Name Change?

An international listing for WWE’s October pay-per-view, currently named Over the Limit, lists the show as Battle Ground. No idea if this in fact a name change or an error. WWE Over the Limit 2013 is scheduled for Sunday, October 6, 2013 from the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York.

Linda McMahon Remains Politically Active Despite Senate Loss

She insists she isn't running for anything, but Linda McMahon is once again taking her money, clout and star power onto the campaign trail.

The Republican from Greenwich who poured $100 million into a pair of unsuccessful runs for U.S. Senate has said repeatedly that her days as a candidate are over.

Yet nine months after losing the 2012 Senate race to Democrat Chris Murphy despite an omnipresent television and direct mail marketing blitz, McMahon has quietly begun her third act in politics: as a key benefactor to the state Republican party, and a trusted adviser to its chairman, Jerry Labriola Jr.

"She's had every reason, after the outcome of her two races, to disappear, but she's done just the opposite," Labriola said. "She's been active and helpful and I know she's dedicated to our party making a strong comeback in Connecticut."

McMahon has no formal title or clearly defined position; her new role is largely playing out in private -- and through the pictures and comments that she posts on Twitter.

"She wants to work behind the scenes to make Connecticut a better place," said Labriola, who added that he often turns to her for advice.

The former CEO of WWE, the Stamford-based wrestling entertainment company, declined requests for an interview.

But one measure of McMahon's enduring celebrity -- and her generosity to the state party -- was her prime seat at the annual Prescott Bush fundraising dinner in May: She sat on the dais with other dignitaries, listening to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the event's keynote speaker. Next month, she will co-host a $100-per-person fundraiser for Republican First Selectman Timothy M. Herbst of Trumbull.

"Linda is definitely going to be a player within the Republican party," said Gary L. Rose, chairman of the department of government and politics at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield and the author of a soon-to-be published book, "No Holds Barred: The 2012 Connecticut Senate race."

"Somebody with those resources, they don't just disappear into the woodwork," Rose said. "She's tasted politics and, even though things didn't really break her way, she's interested in having a voice."...More?

Notable developmental talent left off the NXT taping, trainers frustrated by his recent approach

WWE developmental wrestler Kassius Ohno (aka Chris Hero) was noticeably absent from the most recent NXT television taping. Ohno was working out at the WWE Performance Center during the grand opening on Thursday, but he was did not work the tapings that night because the trainers are frustrated by his lack of commitment to the strength and conditioning program.

A number of people within developmental are said to be disappointed with Ohno, who was considered to be on the fast track to the main roster not all that long ago. Ohno, who worked as Chris Hero on the indy scene, is well liked within developmental and his in-ring ability isn't in question, but there is obviously a message being sent by keeping him off the television tapings. The story goes that when Triple H found out about Ohno's lack of dedication to cutting weight, he was removed from television and plans to bring him into the WWE were put on hold.

CHIKARA Update

Icarus from Chikara had posted on the Chikara forum that he planned to be at the Palmer enter in Easton PA on July 20th (Chikara had a show scheduled for the venue but cancelled it) at 7pm. I attended and here is what happened.

30-35 Chikara fans showed up and waited. Billy Kumohara a former employee of Chikara arrived with a cameraman and interviewed the fans about the recent turn of events. Icarus arrived a little after 7 sorting blond hair and delivered a speech indicating Chikara was his family and his home and basically that we needed to fight for our promotion and he would lead the charge. He also asked if any other wrestlers had shown up and seemed upset that they hadn't answered his call to action but again stated we did and that meant something.. Icarus passed us out a new "I am Chikara" t-shirt to all who attended and then quickly left after having us sign our names/email addresses/and twitter names to a guestbook of sorts.

My assumption is this is a continuation fo the angle or Icarus's way of saying goodbye. Again this Chikara storyline is pretty confusing as the company has been very quiet since the last show on June 2nd.

WWE Working To Take Developmental On The Road

Triple H was asked on Twitter about the possibility of taking NXT on the road outside of Florida and said, "Working on it". He made it clear that he was talking about house shows only and said that they would continue to only tape TV at Full Sail University.

WWE Is Considering 'WWE The Convention'

WWE has started early preparation work for their own weekend long convention styled after the massive San Diego Comic-Con, PWInsider.com has learned. The plan would be for the convention to be held over four days in the same market as a major PPV event.

There is no timetable for the first event to be held yet, as the company is still formulating plans and just began reaching out to fans via surveys to gauge interest on different elements in order to help the company begin to build a better gathering.

The early indications are that the four day event, running from Thursday to Sunday would be far more like a major comic book convention than the current AXXESS events, with specific programming, including panels with WWE writers, executives, legends and current talents.

The gathering would also conceivably feature autograph and photo sessions, interactive contests and activities with other fans, PPV and other event watching parties in theaters, live bouts from WWE NXT, a vendor's area with different exhibitors displaying and selling items, a WWE memorabilia display, a fan collector zone to display your own collection, a WWE videogame lounge and more.

The early plans are to have a VIP ticket in the $100-$150 area as well as a general admission ticket. The convention ticket would be separate from the the PPV ticket.

Early markets under consideration for the event are NYC, Orlando, New Orleans, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Miami, Philadelphia and Las Vegas.

One would have to think that part of the idea behind this project is to keep fans attending major WWE weeks such as Wrestlemania going to WWE-centric events, as opposed to independent gatherings such as Wrestlecon, which was a big success last year.

Baseball's Newest Mascot Is A Mexican Wrestler

The Arizona Diamondbacks have a new mascot, a professional wrestler dressed in the style of a Luchador.

Professional wrestling in Mexico, also called Lucha Libre, is very popular in the southwest United States and now the Diamondbacks are trying to capitalize on that popularity. The wrestlers are called Luchadors and they wear highly stylized masks when they are competing.

This move comes after the Diamondbacks gave away Lucha Libre masks to fans last season, something that proved to be very popular. They will have another mask giveaway later this month.

Justin Credible Comments on the WWE Performance Center, More

Justin Credible wrote the following in a blog posted on pwmania.com:

"Another example of the changing wrestling business is the new WWE Performance Center. Great idea in theory, but in my opinion it’s only going to limit how many young Indy wrestlers will ever get a chance at WWE glory unless they are former NFL or college ballers. Only time will tell, but WWE is smart enough to keep all options open."

I find it interesting that the only negative comments I've read about the WPC were from this guy and pwtorch.com. Pwtorch.com never has anything nice to say about Triple H, so their comments didn't surprise me. But there is something strange going on with Justin Credible.

Justin Credible stated in one of his videos that he wanted to get a job with one of the "major wrestling companies". He initially said he wanted to give back and train the new wrestlers. I guess he has given up on that because recently he started a video series on YouTube giving training advice and tips. Now he is saying he is too good to just train and should be on the main roster.

In May of this year. Credible said he turned himself in for a two-year old warrant that resulted from a check he cashed back when he was using drugs. The check belonged to his father and there was a question as to weather he had permission to cash it. He posted a video on YouTube explaining his side. He also stated that he reimbursed the check cashing place and the charges were dropped. According to public court records in Connecticut, he has a court date on June 23rd for a plea deal. The video has since been removed from YouTube.

I think his comments aren't really his opinion about the WPC. If he had been given a job there as a trainer like he originally wanted, he would be singing it's praises.

Chikara Returning Tomorrow? Potential Reboot Of The Company And More

After supposedly closing down last month, it appears that Chikara may be relaunching tomorrow. After Director of Fun Wink Vavasseur announced that the company was closing during the main event of the ippv , "Aniversario: Never Compromise" back in June, very little has been said about Chikara. Recently, a thread on the Chikara101forums was started by wrestler Dasher Hatfield, with the topic discussing his favorite Chikara moments. Other wrestlers from the company chimed in, including company stalwart Icarus, who had this to say:

"And now here we are 11 years later, shut down by a group of bureaucrats. And I look at this forum and where are my brothers in arms crying 'fight!' like we did back in 2002? I see whimpering posts that seem to be saying 'I accept this fate.' It makes me sick, and heart-broken. It makes me angry.

"CHIKARA isn't some shadowy corporate suits pulling the strings behind the scenes. I am CHIKARA. You are CHIKARA. Are you forgetting that?

"I was given a family that quite honestly, I can't stand. So I spent my adult life creating and molding a new one. A family that I respect and love. You can shut the doors, liquidate the assets, and slap a 'for sale' sign on a company, but not a family. Not my family.

"On my calendar July 20th is marked 'Easton, PA.' That's where my family was supposed to be that day. And I do not accept this fate. If Easton is where CHIKARA was supposed to be, then that's where I'll be. The Palmer Center. 7:00 pm.

"I am CHIKARA. Are You?"

A Chikara event called "All You See Is Mine" was previously scheduled to take place, but was canceled when the company apparently closed down. No other details have been mentioned besides the post by Icarus.

When Chikara closed after Aniversario, The Wrestling Observer stated that anything could be possible, from a storyline to the legit closing of the company. Due to Chikara's affinity for comic books, it could be an excuse for a comic-like reboot of the company. Bryan Alvarez of Figure Four Weekly reported that those close to Chikara founder and booker Mike Quackenbush "don't have any idea where the storyline is going, but feel that Quackenbush is trying to do something big, something never done before in wrestling"

PWI also reported that Chikara talents were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements before the pay-per-view to help keep future developments a secret.

Power couple, Paul Levesque and Stephanie McMahon, usher in ‘a new beginning’ with WWE Performance Center

The recent opening of the new WWE Performance Center in Orlando wasn’t just another milestone in the history of the McMahon family business.

It was a huge moment for Paul (Triple H) Levesque, whose plan for an all-inclusive training facility for up-and-coming superstars became a reality. The WWE grappler has traded in his DX chop for a business suit these days as the WWE Executive Vice President Talent and Live Events. He has transitioned smoothly in the role, with this project being a prime example.

The Game remembered doing the walkthrough for WrestleMania 29 at MetLife Stadium and wanting to take a tour of the New York Giants’ Timex Performance Center at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. The wheels in Levesque’s creative mind began to turn. An idea was born.

“When I saw it, I went, ‘This is it,’” Levesque said. “This is the field, and this is the rest of it. I just took what they had created and thought about how I could take all the components they had and turn that into what we do. That’s how we got here. The Timex Center is nicest center in the NFL. When I saw it, I didn’t need to see any other ones because this is what I wanted to do.”

Levesque’s vision continued to meld, including where this potential state-of-the-art WWE Performance Center would be housed. Full Sail University helped make the decision an easy one.

“As we started thinking about this whole process, where is what I thought about first,” Levesque said. “All the pieces in my head, but the first piece that came to me was Full Sail. [WWE senior vice president of live events and Orlando resident] John Saboor was like, ‘There are these guys that run this media school in Orlando. I don’t know if there is anything there that you guys could do, but it just seemed like a behind the scenes of everything you guys do.’

“They gave me the information, and I went there not thinking anything else about Performance Center or developmental. Then to see it with my own eyes walking into Full Sail Live thinking, ‘We can definitely run a show in here. I can make an arena for television.’”

WWE NXT, featuring future WWE superstars and divas, is broadcast on Hulu Plus and seen in 100 countries from Full Sail Live at Full Sail University in Winter Park, near Downtown Orlando.

Levesque continued: “We started with the pilot there [Full Sail Live], and then we had gone three months to see how it worked for them. Then when we signed on for a few years, it was locked and sold in Orlando. Next step is this [Performance Center] and scouring for buildings.”

The groundbreaking for the facility was April, making a quick turnaround time. Levesque’s wife, Stephanie McMahon, Executive Vice President Creative, couldn’t help getting emotional at the grand opening of the WWE Performance Center after seeing what her husband and everyone involved accomplished there.

“I just think the word that sums it up is pride,” McMahon said. “I’m just so incredibly proud of him, and I’m really proud of the team. I’m really proud of all the superstars and divas, but it takes a leader and a visionary. My husband is that man, and this is his vision. I couldn’t be more proud… They executed it all amazingly fast and on budget. Its high quality, and they delivered on everything. We have an incredible team. There were lots of great people behind this.”...More?

Rumor Mill - Taping Impact on the Road Becoming a Financial Burden for TNA?

According to The Wrestling Observer, it is currently costing TNA approximately $600,000 per taping to film Impact Wrestling on the road, and that large expense is the primary reason why TNA is facing financial problems right now, and as a result has had to cut numerous contracts recently.

TNA President Dixie Carter recently said in an interview that if TNA had taken Impact on the road in earlier years it could have risked the future of the company, however the decision to do it now hasn't really paid off as there has been no significant increase in ratings or revenue.

Currently, TNA has made a long term commitment to taping Impact on the road, and even if the company were to decide to return to taping the show in Orlando, FL, the Impact Zone is unavailable as Universal Studios has a new tenant occupying the soundstage.

Rumor Mill - What Vince McMahon Thinks Is The Reason Behind Monday Night Raw Losing Viewership

There have been a lot of complaints lately about how much and how often Vince McMahon is changing the script for WWE Monday Night Raw each week, typically on very short notice. One of the biggest issues is Vince’s own indecisiveness in terms of how he wants the show structured. When the show first went to three hours last July, the focus was on having the show’s four biggest segments spaced out at the top of every hour (8 PM, 9 PM, 10 PM and 11 PM).

When ratings declined, Vince was convinced it was because viewers “figured out the formula” and were tuning out at the top of each hour. He then tried to mix the most important segments at random times during each hour to try and “force” the viewer to watch the entire show.

There have been many weeks where Vince wants “the best of both worlds” and tries a little of both. The problem is, Vince changes his mind so frequent the writers show up with one structure and Vince wants the other. No matter how much the show is analyzed and broken down, it’s still a three hour show. The fact of the matter is there are many that feel Vince is driving them crazy in finding a way to make something work that just might not work. The decline in ratings could have to do with viewer fatigue and the fact that three hours is too long for one show. However, none of the writers want to challenge Vince about dropping the extra hour as Vince remains pleased with the extra money the company gets for it. The majority of the time writers “bite their tongues” and try their best to give Vince McMahon what he wants each week.

Top TNA Executive Expected To Leave The Company, Agent Out, As Major Office Shakeup Continues

The restructuring within TNA has led to a number of wrestlers being released from their contracts or the company allowing talent contracts to expire. It is also affecting the office side of the company. Multiple sources report that Bruce Prichard, Sr. Vice President of Programming and Talent Relations, was among the office personnel asked to restructure his deal. Prichard is said to have rejected that request. It is believed that his days with TNA are coming to an end barring an unexpected twist.

Meanwhile, the TNA agents were also asked to restructure their deals to a per night agreement. The word in TNA circles is that D-Lo Brown agreed to the per night agreement recently only to be fired by the company shortly thereafter. An attempt to reach Brown for comment on his status was not successful.

WWE Meeting at Cowboys Stadium

Raj Giri of WrestlingINC.com reports that WWE officials were at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas last week to discuss WrestleMania being held there in 2015. A graphic was displayed on the big screen with photos of The Rock and John Cena that read, “Cowboys Stadium Welcomes John Saboor.”

Triple H Talks Physical Hall of Fame

A long-envisioned World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame/attraction business still may come to fruition, a company executive said at last week's opening of the WWE Performance Center in Orlando.

But if one is built, it wouldn’t be like any other hall of fame. “I don’t want a hall of fame or some other attraction to just be something where people see some guy’s shorts,” said Paul Levesque, WWE (NYSE: WWE) executive vice president of talent and live events, as well as the WWE personality Triple H. “We are the WWE and we are big, so whatever we do needs to be the same.”

Levesque was in Orlando on July 11 for the opening of the 26,000-square-foot WWE Performance Center where the firm’s future athletes will be trained. He also was there to address questions about the company’s growing presence in Central Florida, which already consists of regular broadcasts of the WWE NXT program at Full Sail University.

“If I were to go out on a limb, I would say Orlando is the first place we’d look” for an attraction or WWE Hall of Fame, said Levesque to media at the July 11 event.

Later, he told me if the WWE green-lit an Orlando attraction, he’d expect it to consist of major interactive experiences. “If I were to say what it could be, think of it as something that has shows or live interactive things for fans. For example, something like a 4-D experience where the fan would come face-to-face with a 3-D Andre the Giant — something along that scale.”

The company has yet to announce any plans for an attraction, which experts said could be a $100 million investment.

An attraction of that scale would succeed if the WWE makes it interactive, said Dennis Speigel, president of Cincinnati-based International Theme Park Services Inc.

Hall of fames tend to have a tough time because they typically don’t garner enough attendance or provide lasting experiences, he said. That’s why if “WWE has the gun power to develop an attraction that’s state of the art where you come see some of the WWE stars participating in matches or just around the area, it could work.”

But the WWE also must make sure it stays up with the latest technology in the tourism industry to keep up with what the major theme parks are using to market themselves, Speigel said.

WWE Releases 'SummerSlam Is Coming' Video Promo

A Mole In WWE Creative?

In February on r/SquaredCircle, Reddit's pro wrestling forum, one poster kicked off a "prediction series," asking users to pick who they expected to win at that week's Elimination Chamber pay-per-view event. The winner was a user named "Dolphins1925," who posted just minutes before the start of the event, and nailed the results of every single match. It was the first sign that WWE had sprung a leak.

"I will win this guaranteed," Dolphins1925 wrote as he made his picks. "I know all the winners."

That sort of confidence in itself isn't unusual; neither is someone scoring 100 percent on his predictions. Pro wrestling is fairly predictable. Pay attention to who's being pushed and who's being buried, combine that with dirtsheet rumors on what storylines are coming down the pipe, and you can get a pretty good sense of what's going to happen at any given event.

No, what's weird about Dolphins1925's perfect slate is that he made his picks for the next pay-per-view, and the next, all the way down to last night's Money in the Bank event, and he's been completely right, every single time. He's 38 for 38 in predicting the results of matches. He's not just some fan guessing. He knows WWE's plans.

He claims he doesn't work for WWE himself, but has a source who does. He claims he's revealing the results in order to embarrass the company, so it'll realize how leaky its ship is. "I am hoping that spreading the word will get WWE's attention," he wrote. "I am hoping that it will put a stop to spoilers from being leaked."...More?

source: deadspin.com

From pwinsider.com:

According to two WWE sources, this story has made them even madder about the creative leaks. Everyone in WWE who gets their hands on all of the information ahead of time better realize that they are now on WWE's version of Dean Wormer's Double Secret Probation. And oviously, they should be.
