Bruno Sammartino Details Meeting With Vince McMahon At WWE Hall of Fame

WWE Hall of Famer Bruno Sammartino recently appeared on The NB Show. During the interview, Sammartino admitted that he "didn't expect" the hug from Vince McMahon at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony earlier this month, and discussed their private meeting:

"The private meeting that took place was at MSG that evening [of the Hall of Fame]," Bruno said. "His son-in-law Triple H and Stephanie [McMahon] came to my dressing room, I had my own dressing room, and they asked me, you know, Vince is waiting in his dressing room down the hall and if I minded going over there. I went. Stephanie opened the door and I went in and she shut the door so Vince and I were alone.

"He was standing toward the back of the room. And as I came in I was waiting for him to make the first move to see what he was going to say before I responded. And actually as I walked in he looked at me and he smiled and said 'Bruno, welcome home' just like that. And I said 'Well Vince I'm glad to be home, but we both know the situation and what brought me back home. I have been very critical of you.' I told him right to his face, 'You know I have been very critical of you, but I also will recognize the fact that you have made drastic changes and for that I applaud you. But for all these years, I did not like what happened to the business that I spent 25 years in and the turns it took; drugs, nudity, etc.' Vince said, 'Well Bruno, I know you were always very outspoken about what you believed, I hope now you are satisfied of the changes. They are in the past, we want to go forward and we want to do a better and better product. And we are very happy that you are back.'

"He did say this to me which I appreciate, 'When it was the World Wide Wrestling Federation you were the main reason for this organization to become as big as it did. So we want this (HOF Induction) to happen and we're thrilled that it has happened.' And that was it. So I said, 'Thank you. As long as things stay that way and keep moving forward with improving the product. At this stage of my life there is not much I can do to contribute, but if there is something, especially with young talent, I'd be willing to do that. As long as the product gets better and better.' And that was it basically."

Bruno Sammartino and Triple H Discuss WWE Hall of Fame

WWECLASSICS.COM: It’s great to speak with you both. This is obviously an historic announcement, but let’s start off with the elephant in the room. Why now, Bruno? Why did you feel like this was the time to go into the WWE Hall of Fame?

BRUNO SAMMARTINO: Well, I guess the main reason would be Triple H. He’s the one who contacted me months ago and we got acquainted with each other. We had only met once, very, very briefly. I only really knew Triple H as a Superstar with WWE, but in person I think we only met for maybe 20 seconds.

TRIPLE H: I shook your hand once in Pittsburgh.

BRUNO: Exactly. It was a very quick introduction and that was it. But since then, Triple H contacted me and he started telling me everything that was going on with WWE. There had been issues and things that I was not happy with, but when I saw the changes, I was very, very impressed. Triple H was a very sincere guy and he was trained by someone who I had the most respect in the world for, and that was Walter “Killer” Kowalski. And then, of course, when he told me that it’s going to be in Madison Square Garden, that was huge for me, too, because of my history in the Garden.

Bruno Sammartino, "The Living Legend" to Enter WWE Hall of Fame

WWE announced today that Bruno Sammartino will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Madison Square Garden.

Sammartino, nicknamed “The Living Legend,” is a two-time WWE Champion and the longest reigning WWE Champion in history, holding the title for a combined 11 years. His first title reign began on May 17, 1963, where he defeated “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers at Madison Square Garden. After losing the Championship in 1971, he regained the title on December 10, 1973, defeating Stan Stasiak at Madison Square Garden, holding the Championship until April 30, 1977. When he retired from the ring, Sammartino became a color commentator for WWE’s syndicated Superstars program and stepped back into the ring on special occasions. After his departure in 1988, Sammartino was openly critical of WWE, and for many years declined the offer to be inducted into WWE’s Hall of Fame, citing concerns with WWE’s content and culture.

“For my fans around the world, I am pleased to be joining the WWE Hall of Fame, especially at Madison Square Garden,” said Bruno Sammartino.

“Having sold out more than 200 shows at Madison Square Garden and being the longest reigning WWE champion in history, Bruno Sammartino is truly ‘The Living Legend,’” said Vince McMahon, WWE Chairman and CEO. “This is an extraordinary and historic moment to have Bruno take his rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame.”

WWE at Madison Square Garden Results 12/27/12

WWE held their annual holiday week house show at Madison Square Garden, a tradition that goes back decades, on 12/27. The show drew a strong crowd of 14-16,000, but was not a sellout. That is not a real surprise given the local market has had Raws in two nearby New Jersey locations, Wrestlemania tickets on sale and a PPV in Brooklyn in the last few months, plus a house show at Nassau Coliseum tomorrow.

Before the show, they pushed fans to Tweet and text photos and messages for the company to place on their video screens. The entrance way was decorated for the holiday with twinkling lights, blow up characters, etc.

*The New Age Outlaws defeated Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow. The Outlaws received a respectable reaction but not a huge homecoming response. It seemed like the younger fans weren't aware of who they were. They got a much bigger reaction for the catch phrases. Billy Gunn noted it was a PG era, which got boos, but still had the fans yell "Suck it." The match itself was solid, but nothing out of the ordinary. Gunn scored the win with the Famouser. Road Dogg made a remark about Rhodes' "porno mustache" on the mic after the bout.

*Brodus Clay defeated David Otunga. Clay had the Funkadactyles with him and did the entire big production number, sans pyro. Otunga did the old Narcissist posing routine before the show, complete with what sounded like the old Lex Luger theme song. Short match and not very good. Clay got the win with a big splash.

*Jack Swagger emerged on the stage and cut a promo on Clay as he walked to the ring, saying he was going to show the world why he was the All American American and rip Clay apart. Two minutes later, he was pinned as well and Clay did the dance-off with a bunch of kids. The dancing got over big. The match did not.

*They announced Tensai vs. Santino Marella with the loser having to sing a song the audience would vote on. That may have been the oddest stipulation match in the history of wrestling, including the wacky Scorpion and Alligator matches in the 1990s in Japan.

*WWE Divas champ Eve Torres defeated Kaitlyn. Good match. Kaitlyn was really over with the younger female fans at the show as you could hear a LOT of girls chanting for her. Kaitlyn looked pretty good here and this was better than the norm for Divas bouts. They did one spot where Kaitlyn caught Eve attempting a kick and slammed her leg down to the mat, forcing her to land with her legs split. Kaitlyn then punched her down.

*Santino Marella defeated Tensai with the Cobra and pinned him to win the song bout. Vickie Guerrero came out to announce Tensai would have to sing "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer." At this point, Tensai was probably wondering if he could book a flight for the Tokyo Dome. He at first claimed he was Jewish and didn't know the song, then "warmed up" singing a wrestling version of Adam Sander's Hanukkah Song. He then sang the most awful version of Rudolph ever uttered. This didn't appear to get over with anyone but some kids.

*The Shield, in their MSG debut, defeated WWE Tag Team champions Daniel Bryan & Kane and The Miz in the best thing on the show up until this point. Shield came through the crowd and they brawled all over. One of the best things in the company right now is the Shield and I think a good part of that has to do with the fact that since they are so new, they haven't settled into a "routine" like most WWE talents where they have a few signature spots and trademark mannerisms, so everything feels more like an actual battle and less like a show. Early on, they went for a superbomb off the ropes on Bryan but he turned it into a rana on Reigns. The Shield ended up on the floor and Bryan nailed a tope into the aisle. In the end, Miz went for the Skull Crushing Finale on Roman Reigns but was attacked by Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose. They nailed the powerbomb and scored the pin. Great stuff.

*WWE United States champion Antonio Cesaro, in his MSG debut, defeated Zack Ryder with the Neutralizer. Ryder was nowhere as over as his glory days a year ago but got a nice reaction. They had a good match with some nice near falls and the crowd was really buying into the idea that Ryder could win. Real good.

*Ryback pinned Paul Heyman in a NYC Street Fight. Heyman came out and cut a Paul E. Dangerously WCW era promo, basically saying he had been coming to MSG since he was 14 years old shooting photos (the truth) and ran down all the tough names that had been here from Ali vs. Frazier to Bruno, Superstar, Hogan, Rock and Steve Austin (HUGE pop for Austin, one of the biggest on the show) but he was tougher than all of them. He said he would hop the rail and show everyone if he could and all of NYC could "kiss my ass" which is pretty strong language for 2012 WWE. Ryback came out and Heyman went to the floor immediately. The Shield ran out and attacked Ryback. They worked him over and brought a table into the ring in the corner. Miz, Kane and Bryan hit the ring and saved Ryback from being put through it. They all brawled to the back. Heyman entered the ring like a tough guy at this point but Ryback recovered, grabbed him and nailed the Shellshock for the pin. He left, then returned and put Heyman through the table, charging at it while holding Heyman in his arms. Heyman was noticeably protecting his neck while taking the bump. Nice reaction for Ryback and the "Feed me more" chants were very loud.

*John Cena pinned Dolph Ziggler in an entertaining steel cage match. Ziggler was bleeding from around the eye from hitting the steel a little hard. They announced it as escape from over the top or through the door but Cena went for a pin. The referee didn't count and Cena had words with him and those at ringside, then it was suddenly pinfalls being counted as well. At one point, Big E. Langston (MSG debut) tried to pull Ziggler out the cage door, which led to a tug of war with Ziggler in the middle. Langston finally let go, which led to Cena falling back and bumping the ref. AJ hit the ring and slapped Cena, so he kissed her. They went back and forth until Cena hit the AA for the win to send the crowd home happy. Good stuff. Overall, a good show.

WWE MSG House Show Results 03/18/12 - Triple H Returns to Action

(1) Zack Ryder beat The Miz. Ryder scored the pin after a Rough Ryder. Solid match.

(2) WWE tag champions Primo & Epico (w/Rosa Mendes) beat Kofi Kingston & R-Truth to retain the Tag Titles. Initial finish: Kofi scored a pin, but the ref didn’t see a foot under the ropes. The faces were announced as new tag champs, but John Laurinaitis came out, as he saw the foot under the ropes. The match was re-started. Primo then pinned Kofi with a backstabber to retain. Surprisingly good match.

(3) U.S. champion Santino beat Jack Swagger (w/Vickie Guerrero) to retain the U.S. Title. Santino with the Cobra and pin to retain. Again, a false finish in this match. Swagger pinned Santino using the ropes for leverage, then Teddy Long came out and said he saw the feet on the ropes, and ordered the match re-started. Laurinaitis then came out and started arguing with Long. Hornswoggle ran to the ring, bit Swagger on the backside, and Swagger, distracted, walked into the Cobra. Fun match.

(4) Alberto Del Rio beat Mason Ryan via submission. Del Rio with the armbar in less than a minute. Squash.

(5) Triple H & WWE champion C.M. Punk & Randy Orton beat Chris Jericho & Dolph Ziggler & IC champion Cody Rhodes in a six-man tag match. Best match of the night. Hunter Pedigreed and pinned Ziggler for the win. Punk and Orton took turns being beaten up by the heels. Jericho tagged in twice when Punk was at a disadvantage so he could work him over. Hunter was in once early, then came in for the finish while Punk and Jericho battled back to the dressing room. Punk returned, but Jericho did not.

(6) Divas champion Beth Phoenix & Natalya beat Kelly Kelly & Tamina Snuka. Beth pinned Kelly with a powerbomb. Eve was out before the match and told the crowd she knows what she did to Ryder was wrong and she wants to win the crowd back. Decent Divas match.

(7) World Hvt. champion Daniel Bryan beat Mark Henry and Big Show in a three-way match to retain the World Title. Usual match with Bryan either getting bounced around or running for a cover. Finish: Show chokeslammed Henry, but Bryan attacked the legs from behind. Bryan then pounced on Henry for the pin. I have seen this one before.

(8) John Cena beat Kane in a Last Man Standing match. Mixed reactions for both wrestlers. The match was good for what it was. Most of the time, Kane would bring in a weapon and bash Cena, who would get up at the count of nine. Kane used a chair, the bell, a microphone, and a table. Finish: Kane brought in a second table, set it up, but Cena caught him with the Attitude Adjustment to smash him through it. Kane couldn’t beat the ten count, giving Cena the win.

Better Stock Buy - WWE or MSG?

Stock analysis website SmallCapNetwork.com published a comparison of WWE and Madison Square Garden stocks centered around the rise of New York Knicks player Jeremy Lin.

What has always attracted investor attention to the World Wrestling Entertainment is its high dividend yield. In fact, World Wrestling Entertainment has a five year average dividend yield of 9% and it has a dividend payout ratio of 175% – hardly sustainable which explains why the stock has a 4.9% forward dividend yield after the quarterly dividend was slashed from $0.36 to $0.12 early last year. Another concern for investors: Vincent or “Vince” McMahon, the Chairman, CEO and sometimes even a ring participant is the embodiment of the company but he will not stay at the helm forever. Nevertheless, his daughter appears more than capable of taking over the helm at some point in time but again, an investment in World Wrestling Entertainment is an investment in Vincent McMahon and the McMahon family. Nevertheless, World Wrestling Entertainment has managed to remain profitable in a turbulent economy, producing net income of $53,452k (2010), $50,303k (2009) and $45,416k (2008) plus it has a gold mine of content that it can better leverage into further profits. Hence, I would not rule the stock out just because they have decided to cut back on dividends.

The Bottom Line. With or without Jeremy Lin and Vince McMahon, Madison Square Garden (MSG) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) probably have what it takes to at least deserve further investor attention...More?
