Concussion lawsuit should be slammed, says former professional wrestler

When done properly, professional wrestling should look violent, but actually be safe for the performers getting punched, kicked, body slammed and suplexed in the ring.

That's why former professional wrestler Lance Storm says a lawsuit filed against World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) by more than 50 former wrestlers is "frivolous" and "unfounded."

"At the end of the day, pro wrestling is designed to be a non-contact sport in a way," he told the Calgary Eyeopener.

"It's not a true competitive sport, it's a performance art and when you do the job properly, you don't actually hit people very hard."

As well, many of those named as plaintiffs in the class-action suit — including former superstars like King Kong Bundy, Road Warrior Animal, Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff and Jimmy Superfly Snuka — only spent a portion of their careers with the WWE, said Storm.

"I've looked at the list and there's a few people that it wouldn't surprise me if they are suffering because they did a very reckless, dangerous style," he said.

"There's people on this list that are third generation, their grandfather did it, their father did it and they wrestled for upwards of a decade before they got to the WWE, I don't know how you can dump that on the company."

The NFL recently settled a similar suit for $1 billion and a group of more than 100 former NHL players are suing the league.

A pro wrestler for 25 years, Storm spent four years in the WWE and now runs Storm Wrestling Academy in Calgary, training the next generations of superstars. His latest class graduated Friday and Storm's school is fully booked until the spring of 2017.

During his career, Storm was never diagnosed with a concussion and he teaches his students to work the same way.

"I can think of one time that I banged my head really hard, that I'm like, that was probably a concussion," he said.

"I didn't suffer side effects from it, I guess I'm lucky I've got a hard head."

Even though he's never been diagnosed with one, Storm has been part of a long-term study on the effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, for the last eight years, run by the Concussion Legacy Foundation.

"I've donated my brain and my brain stem to them and I'm part of a legends study where each year I fill out an online survey then do a phone interview where they basically give me an impact test, which is what they do to determine concussion, whether you've recovered from one or not. It's an ongoing study to see if my mood changes, my memory, my cognitive function."

One reason he wanted to take part, said Storm, is because he's never abused alcohol or drugs, so will be a good baseline of sorts.

"There's a lot of drugs and alcohol involved in sport and we don't know what role that plays in addition to concussions," he said.

"They've got football players, they've got basketball players, they've got wrestlers. I was someone that never drank and never did drugs of any kind, so when they're doing this study, if my results are different than other athletes that suffered the similar physical symptoms, then perhaps the results could be compounded or due more to the drugs and alcohol and lifestyle of professional athletes."

Lance Storm Commentary: "TNA: I'm Done"

Well folks I’m done. I’m not going to rant, I’m not going to tell you all the things I hated about Impact this week, because none of it matters, I’m just done; I’m done watching Impact for good. I’ve stopped watching before just for my own sanity and peace of mind, but each of those times I intended it to be a temporary break. This time I’m not planning on coming back and checking to see if things have gotten better after a while, I’m washing my hands of the whole thing; I’m done.

The straw that broke the camels back for me was the unprotected chair shot to the head of Rob Terry by Homicide. Yes they have done chair shots to the head before, and they bothered me then too, but this one was different; this unprotected chair shot to the head came just 2 days after Chris Kanyon’s suicide death and I just couldn’t stomach it. I know there will be defenders out there that will want to argue that Chris Kanyon’s depression that led to his suicide has not been determined to as a result of concussions he suffered due to chair shots to the head, but that is just a cop out, in my opinion...More?

Lance Storm Commentary - Retirement

I’ve never wanted to over stay my welcome in this business and I often said I didn’t want to be bumping past 40. This last comeback I did at the age of 40, and while I feel I can still go, I’m most definitely past my prime. I think teaching is where I am best suited now, and since it’s something I truly enjoy that is where my focus needs to remain.

They say, “Never say never in this business” and because of that I won’t, but barring one last shot at a Lance Storm – Chris Jericho retirement match, I am once again hanging them up, and perhaps this time it will be for good...More?

Lance Storm Commentary: "And then for the finale we got the Montreal finish. Are you F’N kidding me? "

Lance Storm comments on the finish to the Kurt Angle vs. AJ Styles match on iMPACT! last week:

And then for the Finale we got the Montreal finish. Are you F’N kidding me? The most over done, bullshit finish in wrestling and we not only got it again, we got an exact carbon copy of it; all we needed was for Kurt to draw WWE in the air at the finish. This finish is so old and so stale it doesn’t draw heat it draws groans of disappointment. My first reaction to this (after my groan of disappointment) was: “Hey that reminds me, WWE is finally doing the conclusion to this 12 year old angle on RAW, I’ll have to be sure to watch that show on Monday!” On top of all that there were a ton of plot holes in this angle...More?

Lance Storm Commentary - "I’m very excited to see the show Monday"

One last thing I want to cover before wrapping this up is the return of Bret Hart to Monday Night RAW. I’m very excited to see the show Monday, because Bret was a big part of why I got into wrestling so I’m really looking forward to his return. I have no expectations going in, I just hope the fans show him the respect he so greatly deserves, and I believe they will. Before WWE announced his return I was planning to flip back and forth and watch both RAW and Impact but now I will watch RAW in its entirety. I will have to either DVR Impact or just watch it at its regular time on Thursday.

For my official rating prediction for January 4th:
RAW (3.6 – 3.8)
Impact (0.6 – 0.8)

Lance Storm Commentary - Booking Hulk Hogan

Let’s be honest, the Hulk Hogan character with his “What you gonna do…” and “Let me tell you something Brother” is 25 years old. It was the hottest act in town for a long, long time, and resulted in the first big boom in wrestling history. After his near decade long run, as the Hulkster, it had run its course, and was losing popularity. Hogan then made another huge impact in the business when he reinvented himself by turning heel and forming the NWO in WCW. This led into the Monday Night Wars and another monster boom in the wrestling business.

After the NWO and Hogan’s heel run, ran its course and WCW lost the Monday Night War to Vince McMahon, Hogan made one more major comeback run in WWE. This was when I got to work with the Hulkster and it was a lot of fun and the guy was still crazy over. I think this return was a success because fans viewed it as a bit of a reunion tour. It was the Hulkster back in the WWE where he belonged, back in the Red and Yellow, and a chance for everyone to see the Baby Face Hogan we all knew and loved one more time.

So fast forward now to January 2010, Hulk Hogan is in his later 50 and trying to make another impact. What can you possibly do with Hulk Hogan in 2010 that will seem fresh and exciting especially when you consider the fact that he can’t physically wrestle much anymore. That’s when I got the idea of Hulk Hogan reinventing himself, one more time, by dropping the Hulk Hogan shtick and presenting himself as real person...More?

Former WWE Wrestlers to Donate Brains for Research

Former WWE wrestler Chris Nowinski issued a memo to PWTorch today listing several former WWE wrestlers who have agreed to donate their brains following death to aid the research of brain trauma from repeated blows to the head.

"Over 20 wrestlers have already enrolled or recently pledged to join the study, including Rob Van Dam, Matt Morgan, Lance Storm, Ken Kennedy, Molly Holly, Tony Garea, Antonio Thomas, Dawn Marie, Kevin Fertig, and other big names who at this point choose to remain anonymous," Nowinski said in a memo. "The only group of professional athletes so far with a greater commitment to this research is NFL players, with over 60 current and retired players involved."

Nowinski issued the memo in response to ESPN's report that Andrew "Test" Martin showed signs of long-term brain damage as a result of repeated trauma to his head during his wrestling career...More?

Lance Storm Comments on the Next Great Bookers of the Business

Lance Storm did an interview with The Monday Night Mayhem Radio Network. He speaks on his views on bookers in professional wrestling:

"The Chairman Of The Board" asked Lance where he feels the next great bookers of the business will be coming from. "The problem is the industry isn't even looking for bookers. I hate the term 'writer,' I hate the term 'storyline.' And I think that the more people we have running the industry or the creative direction that didn't have wrestling background I think is bad. I think the next person who will probably step up & actually be a booker is Hunter (Triple H) once he retires. I have great hopes that once he retires & steps out of the ring, he will be an even bigger asset, because is a little bit more old-school I think. Anytime I had conversations with him or watched him (as far as his work), he seems to have a similar view on the business as I did: that still, at the end of the day, there needs to be some serious wrestling involved. He's been involved in some good angles that I think were largely directly by him. He obviously is someone that is going to end up in power, and can be very good at it. I think that the WWE could be/should be looking at perhaps finding people that worked in the business that had good minds (Tommy Dreamer) & giving them a developmental contract, where they go to Florida & book there (have two or three people down there/brainstorming & working on booking skills), so they have people to replace the people they have got now when the time comes. I think that is one of the biggest things th at is going to be missing...The more we have writers & people growing up on the 'Crash TV'/30-second skits of RAW & iMPACT, the less really-sound understanding minds that really understand the business (Paul Heyman/Jim Cornette) will be hard to come by."

Interview with Lance Storm

If Lance Storm's 12-year-old daughter Rebecca had her way, he'd be competing on Dancing with the Stars.

As it is, he hasn't got much time on his hands to learn the Foxtrot, the Salsa or the Viennese Waltz. At age 40, he runs a successful wrestling school in Calgary and has stepped up his own training program to return to the ring for two matches, July 24 and 25 on Ring of Honor shows in Toronto...More?

Lance Storm Critical of iMPACT! and Raw

I don’t think I’ve ever been more flabbergasted with what I’ve seen on television, as I have been this week. I watched both RAW and TNA this week and left both shows completely shaking my head. If I were to shake my head any harder I’d probably end up with a worse neck than Kurt Angle.

While Impact was by far the worst of the two shows (it may have been the worst wrestling program ever) RAW was, perhaps more importantly, far more counter productive. Raw had a ton of momentum going into this weeks show. The heavy angle last week with Vince and Randy Orton was AWESOME. Randy was fantastic in every regard last week (as he has been since his return) and he was really coming off as the true Star in WWE. Kicking Vince in the head last week was an “Oh My God” moment like no other. It looked great, put a ton of heat on Orton, and left everyone thinking, what next. They then followed up with Orton winning the Royal Rumble and making Randy the most important player in the company.

Then… then… then the show fell off a cliff, crashed and burned, and died a painful miserable death. Shane McMahon came to the ring and beat the living shit out of all three members of Legacy. Yes Shane McMahon, the non-wrestling character, office working son of the boss, single handedly destroyed the newly created hottest heel in the company in a one on three situation.

You could have dropped this angle in liquid nitrogen and it wouldn’t have lost heat this fast...More?

Scathing review of 'Ring of Hell' by Lance Storm

Before I get into specifics let me offer this quick over view. Ring of Hell is the Jerry Springer Show of wrestling books. In my opinion it is a complete waste of paper and a HUGE load of crap. Matthew Randazzo the 5th (MR5) is in my opinion a pathetic researcher, a terrible writer, and in several instances, throughout his book, guilty of the same things he condemns the wrestling business for. What I find even more disappointing than the $18 I wasted on this book is that there is in fact a darker side to the wrestling business that can and should be improved upon, but instead of writing a serious expose of the businesses legitimate shortcomings, MR5 seems to sell out and write a sensationalized load of crap in hopes of shock valuing his way into a writing career...More?

Lance Storm on Adapting MMA

Lance Storm comments on the Undertaker's use of a mma submission hold in wrestling:

For those of you who haven’t been watching SmackDown lately, the Undertaker is now using a Gogoplata Choke (a legit MMA choke) as his new finisher. The hold, for lack of a better description, is a variation of a triangle choke executed from your back where you wrap your one leg out and around your opponents shoulder and then back under his chin and then pull his head down across your shin with your hands. To execute the hold you have to use both legs and both hands while lying on your back...More?
