Lindenhurst actress and stunt woman Stephanie Finochio - also famous for her professional WWE wrestling persona Trinity - has taken on a new role as a jammer (scorer) for the recently founded, Suffolk County-based roller derby team Strong Island Derby Revolution.
Prior to taking on this new sports role, Finochio starred in the 2011 film Jesse. She's also starring in the upcoming indie film The Night Never Sleeps, which shot scenes at Top Bun in Lindy this past December.
"Roller derby is this amazing unique sport....I played sports my whole life since high school, and something about roller derby makes it so unique....It's so physical, it's rough, it's tough, [and] there's strategy involved. It's a great mental and physical sport. I love it," Finochio, a Lindy alum, told Lindenhurst Patch.
The team recently held and won its home season opener in Saint James 94 to 88 against the Worcester (Massachusetts) Warriors...More?

Roller Derby That's More Sport Than Show
The Charm City Roller Girls have a message for all those old-time roller derby fans out there: this isn't your grandma's roller derby.
"All that stuff is actually completely gone right now," says Hilary Rosensteel, a roller girl almost since the team was founded in 2005. And by "stuff," she means the elbows, extravagant cheating and over-the-top showmanship that, back in the '60s and '70s, made roller derby the female equivalent of professional wrestling.
These days, she insists, roller derby is more about competition than show. Not, she hastens to add, that derby has turned sedate, or completely respectable...More?

Women's Roller Derby Dishes Out Fun, Friendship and Fitness
Amber Mori drives a forklift in a warehouse in Gaithersburg, Maryland. As a working mom, she's on the go 24/7. But twice a week, Amber transforms into "Cykosis," a fishnet-wearing, skatin' diva, who bumps and jabs her way around a roller rink.
Because bashing, bruising and bumping are all part of the game, players also learn how to fall to reduce injury. Amber has been skating for more than a year as a member of the "Mason Dixon Roller Vixens" roller derby team. What started out as a lark has now become a passion for her. "I love it; it's a great way to get out, be invigorated -- and the companionship is wonderful," she says. "And I've got legs as strong as pythons."
Women's roller derby started as a professional sport in the 1920s, when teams criss-crossed the country, jabbing and jostling and duking it out for money and, eventually, the national championship. By the 1970s, roller derby teams (and their fans) started to wane.
But with the resurgence of the extreme sports craze, women's flat track roller derby has made a comeback. Tired of pilates and Jazzercise, a lot of women started looking for more exciting outlets to stay in shape; the campy novelty of the sport piqued interest. Now, nonprofessional groups such as the Vixens are popping up all over the country...More?

Roller Derby Resurgence
Roller derby has been around since the 1920s, but the sport has been experiencing a resurgence recently, with new leagues and teams hitting rinks all over the United States. In 2004, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association formed to promote the sport, and you know BUST has written about roller derby many a time. Other media outlets like CNN have also been giving these ladies some love lately.
Derby girls come in all sorts of healthy shapes and sizes, too! I’m also intrigued by roller derby because… well… what other sport lets you don fishnets if you want and change your name to something like Skid Ho? Gotham Girls Roller Derby league in New York describes it like this: ‘Every Gotham Girl is an amalgam of athlete, pin-up girl, rocker and brute rolled into one badass derby girl. Pretty? Hell, yeah! Tough? Of course! Badass? Always!’...More?
