Lex Luger to be honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame issued the following press release on Thursday to announce that Lex Luger will receive the Frank Gotch Award.

Overcoming adversity is the hallmark of this year’s recipient of the Frank Gotch Award. Lex Luger will be presented the award by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum during the 2016 George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame weekend on July 21-23.

The Frank Gotch Award is given to a professional wrestler who brings positive recognition to professional wrestling through work outside the ring.

“The Total Package” Lex Luger is one of the most recognized professional wrestlers in the history of the sport. He was a two-time WCW World champion and a five-time NWA/WCW United States Heavyweight champion. He is best known for his feuds with Sting, Hulk Hogan, and Ric Flair as well as being a member of the famed Four Horsemen. Luger was selected as the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Rookie of the Year in 1986 in a class that included Sting and Bam Bam Bigelow. He was also a standout in football, playing for the Miami Hurricanes before a career in the CFL, NFL, and USFL.

On October 19, 2007, Luger suffered a stroke, which led to temporary paralysis. He was in a quadriplegic state for a month after the surgery, but is able stand for short periods of time with his walker. Today, Luger presents a message of hope to thousands across the country.

“The Frank Gotch Award was established to recognize wrestlers who have brought recognition to wrestling beyond the mat,” said Bill Murdock, 2007 winner of the Lou Thesz World Heavyweight Championship Award and a member of the Hall of Fame selection committee. “Lex Luger personifies this award. His positive message has touched countless people throughout the world. It is an honor to induct Lex into the 2016 Class of the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame.”

Goldberg: ‘I Recently Spoke With Triple H About A Return’, More

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Goldberg revealed he spoke to Triple H about a possible WWE return but doesn’t think it worked out well. Here are highlights:

On never being one to back down from a fight, even with Vince McMahon: “[Hulk] Hogan once said to me, ‘Hey brother, you’re going to have to play the game. If Vince calls you in the middle of the night to get on a plane, you’re going to have to do it.’ I said to him, ‘You obviously don’t know me.’”

On Sting getting him into the business: “Sting was the guy who changed my mind. He and Lex Luger used to own a gym called Main Event Fitness in Atlanta. When I was with the Falcons, I used to work out there. I would have never imagined in a trillion years that I would have followed this path, but what made the decision realistic for me was the way Sting carried himself. When I met Sting, and observed him leading his family, business, and social life, it was completely different than what I’d ever seen in the past. I thought, ‘You know what? I can do this.’ So I bought thousands of dollars of old tapes trying to perfect moves that nobody had ever done before. I saw something that I liked, then I’d change it and make it my own.”

On WWE trying to dismiss his impact on wrestling: “That’s the way I feel. I’m surely not going to be somebody who pounds his chest and professes I was somebody who couldn’t be replaced, but I think I made a difference. For that character, nobody could do it better. So to not get the credit for the impact that I helped make is frustrating.”

On a recent talk with Triple H: “I had a conversation with Paul [Levesque] recently and I said, ‘Listen, I’m willing to put everything aside. If you guys want to sit down and make some money and have some fun, then let’s do it. My son wants to see me wrestle, and I’m willing to put all the bad feelings aside. If you guys want to move forward and do this thing the right way, then let’s talk.’ And that’s the way it ended. There’s nothing there. Truthfully, I don’t even think they want me to come, period. I’m just not one of them. The fact that I’m not far outweighs the financial gain, which they truly may not even believe is there. And I’m good with that. I’m absolutely fine with that.”

On WWE possibly inducting him into the WWE Hall Of Fame: “I don’t have a time limit and age is just a number for me. If the Hall of Fame presents itself, then I’ll do it in a heartbeat. But it’s not something where I sit here and go, ‘Man, I wish the WWE would induct me in the Hall of Fame.’ I don’t think about what I would say in my speech or who would induct me. I don’t think about that, by no stretch of the imagination.”

Mattel Creating New Lex Luger Action Figure; Vote for Which Gimmick You Want to See Designed

Mattel will be creating a new WWE Flashback action figure for former WCW World Champion and Royal Rumble winner, Lex Luger. A member of the Mattel design team is asking fans which gimmick from Luger's career they would most like to see created. The choices are:

NWA Four Horsemen Lex Luger
"The Narcissist" Lex Luger
WWE Allied Powers Lex Luger
NWO Wolfpack Lex Luger

Currently, the Allied Powers model is in the lead by a good amount. This is somewhat of a surprise, given that the Allied Powers - Luger and the British Bulldog - was a short-lived WWE tag team that had a small run in 1995, before Lex returned to WCW. You can cast your vote here.

Frank Gotch again defeats George Hackenschmidt in their rematch from 1908 in front of a reported crowd of 25,000 at White Sox (Comiskey) Park. Hackenschmidt badly injures his knee prior to the match, allegedly at the hands of Ad Santell. Supposedly, and this is one of pro wrestling's great unsolved mysteries, Santel was paid a sum of money to hook Hackenschmidt in training. Gotch hated Hackenschmidt and didn't want to give him a rematch.

Interview with Lex Luger

Larry Pfohl, more commonly known to professional wrestling fans as "Lex Luger", has had some unparalleled high points throughout his life, performing for millions of fans every year and winning world championships. He made national headlines in 1993 by boarding the USS Intrepid, via helicopter, and picked up the near-700 pound WWF Champion, Yokozuna. Two years later, Lex rocked the wrestling world again, jumping a metaphorical ship this time, appearing on the first ever episode of WCW Nitro to confront Hulk Hogan, not 24 hours after working a live event for the WWF.

But along with the great moments and large paychecks, living the dream came with its fair share of pitfalls and demons not uncommon among pro wrestlers in the '90s. In his new tell-all book, Wrestling with the Devil, Lex reveals the dangers of his "secret life", filled with extramarital relationships, steroids and nagging injuries that led to his morning, afternoon and nighttime habbit of pills and alcohol. Billed as wrestling's "Total Package", the ultimate narcissist drove down a road that saw him land in prison on more than one occasion. It saw the end of his marriage, estranged relationships with his family, and the tragic death of Miss Elizabeth Hulette, the first lady of professional wrestling.

I talked with Lex Luger recently, about his rise to the top of the wrestling industry, and his fall into absolute darkness. After cleaning himself up, and planting the seeds for a spiritual relationship that would come to define him, a man always considered a top physical athlete in just about every sport imaginable, suffered a spinal stroke that left him briefly paralyzes.

"They told me I was never gonna have any movement from the neck down. I was going to need 24 hour care for the rest of my life."

The interesting thing about this former bodybuilder and WCW World Champion is that he could have given up; admitted defeat and spent the rest of what was left of his life sitting in a chair, bitter at the industry and his own decisions that put him there. However, Luger found great blessing in his injuries.

"I could give you a whole list of the things I've benefited from, from having an injury like that where I was physically challenged. I was always an athlete; I never had that before. It's just been a great learning experience for me ... It didn't seem so at the moment, but overall it's been a very positive journey."

News from the TNA Hall of Fame Ceremony

TNA inducting Sting into their Hall of Fame last night in Phoenix. We know that the welcome was done by Jeremy Borash, Mike Tenay handled the opening remarks and then speeches were done by AJ Styles, Hulk Hogan and Lex Luger. The actual induction was done by Dixie Carter. Pretty much the entire TNA roster was in attendance but at best we can tell, there was no appearance by WWE Superstar Christian. Highlights from the ceremony will air tonight on the Bound For Glory post-show.

Lex Luger Interview: Flair, Hennig, WBF, More...

Partying with Ric Flair: Limosuine riding jet flying, that was the lifestyle. Ric would stay up so late, riding around the town. Early in my career, when I was riding with him....He always checked into real fancy hotels, so he checked into this fancy hotel in Sacramento so I did too, but by the time we got there, we checked in and had to go straight to the arena, then we stayed out all night, and when we got back to the hotel, we had a flight to catch, I got into the room and lay down on the bed for like ten seconds and had to grab my bag and go check out. Now this was the 80s and the room cost $500, I almost fell over in the lobby. I was so mad at Ric. I just spent $500 on a room I never got to stay in and Ric said “All part of the image enhancement Lex, all part of the image enhancement”

Why he joined the WBF instead of WWF in 1992: Vince is the genius of marketing. I still had a one year no compete agreement with WCW left so Vince had me join the WBF to segway me into my career with the WWF. He really had no intention of me being a bodybuilder, neither did I.

Why WrestleMania 9 match with Mr Perfect wasn’t well received: It was the first time I did an outdoor event. Vegas is like a fun goofy town. in the match I thought I had a day off working with Curt. They thought ‘we better give Lex, Curt so he has a good match’ We went over the match all day and when we got in the ring to lock up, Curt had an off day! I’m sitting back not thinking about the match. You can see the look in my eyes during the match when Curt forgot the match. It was so funny. We managed to get through the match. I was almost in a state of shock when Curt asked me in the match “What are we doing?”

Thoughts on the booking at WrestleMania X with Lex, Bret and Yokozuna
: Vince had a very special relationship with MSG, Vince thought everyone expected me to win the belt at SummerSlam but he said “if we do decide to put the belt on you, lets do it at WrestleMania in Madison Square Garden instead, that’s where I’d like to do it” I was never promised but that was the thinking. I didn’t know who would win between Yoko and Bret, I just knew I wasn’t going to. I only heard by chance. My family came to the event and when Vince heard my wife was coming, he thought I was only bringing them because I thought I was going to win the belt, but that’s not the case.

Lex Luger Says He Would Be Honored To Be Inducted Into The WWE Hall of Fame

During a recent public appearance, Lex Luger was asked what being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame would mean to him.

“It would just be a tremendous honor if someday I was inducted in the Hall of Fame, but really, we’re here to get down to glory to God now with our lives and serve others and use open vessels for him to bring people to Christ,” says Luger, who in 2006 declared himself a born again Christian.

Lex continues, “But, would that be an honor? It’s something that would also help to use as a platform to continue ministry as well. It would be wonderful, definitely.”

Wrestlezone.com reported last week that Luger not being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this year as part of the Horsemen clan stems from the events surrounding Miss Elizabeth’s death, which occurred on May 1, 2003 in the home they shared. Her cause of death, according to the coroner’s report, was “acute toxicity” brought on by a buffet of prescription painkillers and vodka. Many people in WWE blame Luger for her tragic death as he’s seen as her enabler. Luger himself has admitted to being a negative influence on her life.

“I take a lot of responsibility for that—my influence in her life,” he told ESPN.com in 2007 regarding his heavy drug abuse, which rubbed off on her during their relationship. “Her little heart and body couldn’t take what I was doing.”

Lex Luger Addresses Exclusion from Horsemen in WWE HOF

Former WWE/WCW star Lex Luger says he does not feel "snubbed" by WWE for including Barry Windham in the Four Horsemen group announced for the 2012 WWE Hall of Fame. Luger said on the Busted Open satellite radio show this week he would have picked Windham or Ole Anderson for the fourth spot along with Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, and Tully Blanchard. "I think it would be a great time in Barry's life right now from what I hear (battling health issues), for him to receive that," Luger said before noting he plans to attend the ceremony. "I'm going to be down in South Beach for WrestleMania. I wouldn't miss it. I will be in the audience cheering on the guys who gets selected as the Four Horsemen."
