Al Snow Purchases Ohio Valley Wrestling, Talks Future Plans For The Company

Last weekend, it was announced via WDRB 41 that former WWE European and Hardcore Champion Al Snow is buying Ohio Valley Wrestling. OVW was founded by former wrestler "Nightmare" Danny Davis in 1997, and has been one of the longest-running televised wrestling shows ever since.

Over the years, OVW is also known for being the developmental territory for both WWE and Impact Wrestling creating WWE stars such as Brock Lesnar, John Cena, and WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix, among many others. For many years, Snow was a trainer in OVW, and helped build several successful WWE names.

After 21 years as the founder of OVW, Davis is now retiring to Florida, and Snow will take over as the lead executive. Currently, OVW features mostly indie talent. However, former WWE and Impact Wrestling star Elijah Burke is active in the company.

"What I have in mind is to create a great developmental center for wrestling talent to come find themselves, learn their craft, and learn it from truly experienced professional wrestlers," said Snow in an interview with FITE TV. "I've always said that when you attend a wrestling school, or a wrestling training academy of any sort, that you take it much like if you were going to a university. If you want to go for accounting, you go in, you pay your tuition, you ask the Dean, 'Ok, what's my professor?' and he goes, 'this guy's really good, he's very talented.' Well great! Who's he work for? What's he done? What kind of experience he has?

"Well, he's never really went anywhere, he's never really done anything, but he's really good, he's at the top of his class. That's great, but if he doesn't have experience, that means he has no real knowledge. If he has no real knowledge, there's no way that he can communicate to you what you need to know. So you better take advance of any opportunities that may come up for you."

The announcement of Snow taking over was well-received by both the current roster, as well as former Impact Wrestling stars, with names such as Hornswoggle and Madison Rayne sending their congratulations. As far as when the first show of Snow taking over will be, he stated, "it will be soon and I will let everyone know."

Former WWE Developmental Territory Being Sold

"Nightmare" Danny Davis announced today via the Ohio Valley Wrestling website that he is selling OVW. OVW has served as a developmental territory for WWE and TNA in the past, producing stars like Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Randy Orton and others. OVW officials wrote the following:

After 22 years in business and mentoring more than 150 athletes to professional wrestling’s national stage Ohio Valley Wrestling owner Danny Davis will immediately step away from the company he founded.

Monday Davis announced the completed sell of majority ownership in Ohio Valley Wrestling to a private investor. Davis said, “I have been searching for the perfect person to carry on OVW's legacy and I believe I’ve found them.”

OVW launched in 1993 and eventually grew into the developmental training territory for both World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and Total Nonstop Action (TNA) the two largest sports entertainment companies in the United States. Davis’ resume is unmatched. No other professional wrestling company in the world has helped more talent fulfill their dreams on the national stage. Davis played a vital role in coaching the biggest stars in the wrestling industry over the last two decades including John Cena, Brock Lesnar, CM Punk and Randy Orton.

“I want to thank the guys and girls who allowed me to play a part in their careers and the OVW fans for their unwavering dedication.” He said, “I’ve been mulling this decision for several weeks and the time is right for my family to begin a new chapter.”

Davis’ career started in the 1970’s in the old Memphis wrestling territory. He's respected the world over as “The Nightmare” a tag team wrestling expert. On July 4th, Davis teamed with one of his first students, “Ironman” Rob Conway, a former WWE Superstar and multi time NWA World Champion at the OVW Saturday Night Special.

Davis is inviting all fans, media and OVW wrestlers past and present to this Wednesday’s television taping, July 8th, 2015. The new majority owner of Ohio Valley Wrestling will be introduced.

OVW TV takes places in Davis Arena, 4400 Shepherdsville Rd. Louisville, KY. 40218. Doors open at 6:30pm. General admission seats are $5.

Rumor Mill - Details on Issues with Rip Rogers in TNA Developmental, Alleged Extortion & More

According to a TNA/OVW trainee, Rip Rogers was reportedly trying to extort money from the company. He was trying to get paid from the trainees for their instruction in the advanced class.

These TNA "refugees" were basically winners on Gut Check first and then told about going to OVW. WZ was told this is probably why Adam Pearce didn't "win" because he wasn't going to take the OVW assignment.

It was reported earlier that today's talent releases were mostly a cost cutting measure, and in an update on Doug Williams, who was also recently released from TNA, WZ was told "Why wouldn't TNA pay Doug Williams when they promised him a job as trainer? Because they didn't want to pay to renew his visa."

Behind The Scenes Problems In TNA; Two Talents Request Release, More Releases Expected, OVW Issues

Sources have informed WZ of some behind the scenes news and chaos at TNA Impact wrestling.

We've been told Christian York got released Tuesday and Taeler Hendrix did not sign a new contract to stay with the company. More departures are expected soon that vary from cuts or talents requesting their release.

The relationship with OVW as a training center seems to be "in shambles" as one source described it. Problems have came up particularly with former head trainer Rip Rodgers concerning money.

It seems many internally are questioning TNA's direction and if they know what they're doing or want to do. In addition, sources are saying Al Snow, who is working as a road agent for the company, has been making promises to wrestlers which he can't fulfill because he doesn't have the power that he acts like he has.

TNA Signs Developmental Deal with Ohio Valley Wrestling

In a statement released to PWInsider, TNA announced OVW would now be a "development and training facility" for the promotion, with Bruce Prichard working closely with OVW owner Danny Davis in the development of future TNA talents.

While TNA has never had an official developmental territory, they had in the past subsidized some wrestlers' training at the Team 3D Wrestling Academy in Florida, including former CBS reality star Jesse Godderz.

Based on the statement issued to PWInsider, TNA would be sending talent to OVW to train and hone their skills.

The company's new project in India for the Colors Network was slated to include training ten new Indian talents that would be regulars for the new TV series being developed for that market, so I would assume this is where they will be trained. That project is slated to begin taking in just a few months in India.

OVW was the official developmental territory for WWE from 2000 through 2008, helping to develop, among others, John Cena, Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar and Batista.

WWE and OVW working together again

WWE and Ohio Valley Wrestling are now back to having what has been described as a "working relationship." OVW is not being considered an actual developmental territory at this point though. WWE has agreed to send wrestlers there for some TV tapings and Six Flag events to help boost attendance so Danny Davis doesn't have to shut everything down. According to reports, it has been harder to foot the bill for TV recently and have changed to taping both OVW and Derby City Wrestling events on Wednesday's charging $5 for admission.

Rumor Mill - Timmy Baltimore returning to OVW

Timmy Baltimore, an announcer who was signed to a developmental deal, is returning to OVW. His contract already expired with WWE and they chose not to re-sign him. Baltimore was sent to FCW after being hired and while some say he's good enough to be put right on WWE TV, he was forced to work as a bell ringer and doing other stuff for Dusty Rhodes in Tampa. Baltimore didn't get to announce a single time and basically told the company that if he knew that was what he would have been doing, then he would not have signed in the first place.
