There's a WWE oral history coming -- and Vince McMahon is involved

The stories of Vince McMahon and the WWE have been told from a variety of different perspectives over the years, but there hasn't been a singular, unfiltered, comprehensive look at the origins of the man or the company he built that included Vince's voice -- until now.

Journalists Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum, the authors of "I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution," are set to write the definitive oral history of the WWE and the man who took professional wrestling into the mainstream and created an empire that continues to grow to this day.

The involvement and commitment of Vince McMahon and his entire family was the final push that made this long-discussed project into a reality.

"I think that that was one of the negotiating points where the WWE knew that we were serious about writing a no-holds-barred book," said Tannenbaum, in an interview with ESPN.com. "Sometimes when you're trying to sell someone on an idea they're reticent about, you underplay what you're asking for. Craig and I, I think if anything, overplayed what we were asking for.

"We made it clear that we wanted access to Vince and to the entire McMahon family," Tannenbaum continued. "And that what we wanted was not a 15-minute phoner. We were going to need an ample amount of his time which in some ways is a dumb thing to ask for, because he's got a lot better things to do than talk to two geeks about the history of the WWE."

Though Vince McMahon rarely does interviews these days, his blessing and willing involvement separate this project from everything that's come before it.

"This will be an unapologetic look at the good, the bad and the ugly, and the journey that made WWE into the global phenomenon it is today," said Vince McMahon, WWE Chairman and CEO, said via a news release Thursday.

Shane McMahon Returns to WWE Raw During Vincent J. McMahon Award Segment

As seen on WWE Raw tonight, Vince McMahon presented the first ever Vincent J. McMahon Legacy of Excellence Award to his daughter Stephanie McMahon, and the ceremony was interrupted by a returning Shane McMahon.

Shane McMahon demanded control of Monday Night Raw from Vince McMahon and Stephanie McMahon.

Vince agreed and said he would give Shane control of the show, but only if he wins one match, on one night. Vince said that he will choose Shane’s opponent, and if he wins, then he can have control of Monday Night Raw.

Vince then announced the match will take place at WrestleMania 32, and Shane’s opponent will be The Undertaker. Vince added that the match will take place inside Hell in a Cell.

WWE Neglects Major Anniversary

With all of the talk of the upcoming 20th anniversary of Raw, WWE has overlooked a much more important anniversary.

January 7th, was the 60th anniversary of the Capitol Wrestling Corporation.

According to the WWE Encyclopedia, Vince McMahon Sr. promoted his first wrestling event under the Capitol banner on January 7, 1953.

Now I understand how WWE likes to say that they were officially created a decade later in January 1963 when they broke away from the NWA, but the truth is all they did was just change the name of the promotion. Nothing else changed as far as company management, stockholders, the roster, champions, booked arenas, TV timeslots, staff, etc. They were still the sam exact company.

The only thing that actually changed was the name from Capitol Wrestling to the World Wide Wrestling Federation, similar to how they changed their name again in March 1979 from the WWWF to the WWF and again in May 2002 when they changed their name from the WWF to WWE.

WWE Working On Celebration

WWE will be facing a major project in 2013 as they prepare to celebrate their 50th anniversary. It would really be the anniversary of the WWE Title, which took the name in early 1963 when it was announced on TV that Buddy Rogers had won a tournament in Brazil to become the new Worldwide Wrestling Federation world champion. This came when Vince McMahon Sr. and those who worked with him in the Northeast withdrew from the NWA over their decision to take the title off Rogers and put it on Lou Thesz. Rogers was first billed as WWWF Champion around May 1963 on TV but most remembrances of the title date back to May 17th, 1963 when Bruno Sammartino beat Rogers in 48 seconds at Madison Square Garden to begin an almost eight-year reign.

For the celebration in 2013, WWE already had a DVD planned and other ideas are being discussed to go along with it.
