More Backstage News on Tommy Dreamer’s Status in WWE and TNA, Promoting House of Hardcore on Raw and More
As seen on Raw last night, ECW legend Tommy Dreamer made his return to WWE and aligned with The Dudley Boyz in their fight against The Wyatt Family.
According to PWInsider.com, it is not known if Dreamer has signed a full-time deal with WWE, but he most likely has not.
Dreamer was previously scheduled to work as a producer for TNA during its India tour, but with that being canceled it provided a window of opportunity for WWE to bring Dreamer in to help with the Wyatt/Dudley feud. Dreamer is not signed to a TNA deal, so it’s entirely possible WWE could sign him to a full-time, longer term deal if that’s what both sides are interested in.
As for what Dreamer was wearing on Raw last night, it was interesting to see WWE allow him to wear a House of Hardcore t-shirt, which is Dreamer’s independent promotion. With regards to the Polk-a-Dot pants Dreamer was wearing on Raw, that’s something he has been doing since one of his heroes, Dusty Rhodes, passed away.
ECW Original Returns to WWE on Raw Tonight to Assist The Dudley Boyz
Last night on Raw, ECW original Tommy Dreamer made his return to WWE and joined The Dudley Boyz to assist them in their fight against The Wyatt Family.
The three ECW legends took on the team of Braun Strowman, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan in a 6 man tag team match. The finish of the match came when the match broke down and the ref ruled it a no contest.

WWE Reportedly Nixes Plans to Bring Big Name in For NXT Appearance Due to Him Appearing on TNA TV
According to The Wrestling Observer, WWE wanted to bring Bully Ray in for the May 15th NXT Live Event which took place in Philadelphia.
WWE knew Bully Ray would get a big pop from the Philly crowd, but after he appeared on the May 8th edition of Impact Wrestling to referee a match between Kurt Angle and Eric Young, WWE nixed the idea to use Bully. The role went to Tommy Dreamer instead, and he ended up working an NXT match against Baron Corbin.
Despite recently returning to TNA as the new authority figure on Impact Wrestling, Bully Ray is still pushing for one last run in WWE with his tag team partner Devon. In a recent interview with The Fight Network, Ray said he thinks him and Devon are in their best shape

Nitro was just over 200 miles away in Baltimore, Maryland, and featured Ultimo Dragon defeating WCW Cruiserweight Champion Eddie Guerrero by submission to win the title for the second time, Booker T winning his first of a record six WCW World Television Titles from Disco Inferno, and a main event of WCW World Champion Sting defeating Hollywood Hulk Hogan.

The show would air on the following Monday, January 4, 1999. That night Tony Schiavone would reveal the result during WCW Monday Nitro, airing live that night, noting that Mankind as champion "ought to put a lot of butts in the seats." Schiavone would later claim Eric Bischoff fed him that line to say. D-Generation X celebrated with Foley after the match.

Flair & Others Return to Raw
Ric Flair returned to WWE on this week’s Raw, presenting John Cena with the “Superstar of the Year” Slammy Award and getting into a confrontation with CM Punk and then The Shield. After this, Flair appeared in a backstage segment with Team Hell No when Ron Simmons made a cameo.
This comes after cameos from The Boogeyman and The New Age Outlaws. Boogeyman appeared as Booker T was handing out the “Tell Me I Didn’t Just See That” Slammy to Kofi Kingston and the Outlaws handed out the “Comeback of the Year” Slammy to Jerry Lawler. Both Road Dogg and Billy Gunn are employed by WWE.
Flair has been trying to return to WWE since May with the ongoing litigation filed by TNA Wrestling blocking a contract from getting signed. He had told friends that if the litigation wasn’t settled soon, they would “get creative” to bring him back. While Flair hasn’t been under TNA contract since September, WWE has shied away from hiring anyone that worked for TNA while Brian Wittenstein was employed there.
Flair’s daughter, Ashley, is currently under a WWE developmental contract.
Tommy Dreamer returned to WWE for a 6-man tag team match on this week’s Raw, teaming with The Miz and Alberto Del Rio to face 3MB. Miz and Del Rio teamed with Brooklyn Brawler to face the trio at WWE TLC.
The idea at TLC was to use Brooklyn Brawler to generate a cheap pop for Miz and Del Rio given the show was in Brooklyn. The same thinking seems to be in order for this match with Raw in Philadelphia, the home of ECW.

This Day In Wrestling History - ECW Goes Too Far
Arena recap filed by Dave Scherer of pwinsider.com on October 28, 1995:
On this night, ECW totally dropped the ball.
The singularly most stupid series of events in wrestling history occurred. Raven and Cactus pulled out a chair that had towels affixed to it somehow. These towels were soaked in lighter fluid or some other flammable liquid and they used the branding iron to ignite the whole mess. As the flames rose off of the chair, the sickening feeling in my stomach worsened. Cactus winds up and hits Dreamer with the chair, and he catches on fire. The fans were stunned, and did not even pop. I said into my recorder, “Death must be the next bump.”
Cactus tries to pick up the chair, but it is flaming almost uncontrollably. He somehow picks it up and as he winds up, the towels that are burning are coming loose, which someone should have thought of as it is pretty hard for something that is burning to stay attached to a chair. He throws the chair at Funk, who is now laying on the floor near the ring barricade, and fire goes everywhere.
Funk is literally a man ablaze. As Funk is running around ringside, fans are trying to put him out. The towels are laying on the floor burning and the crowd starts to go nuts. A few people came over with the fire extinguishers and as the shoot the towels, they actually go into the crowd making matters worse. If one person, as I was told was the plan, had suffocated the fire, it would have gone out, instead it was shot across the Arena floor.
I was told that the whole fire gimmick was thought up by Funk and Cactus, and was not known to Paul Heyman beforehand. In any event, the buck stops with Heyman and it is ultimately his responsibility.
All of this was bad enough. People were scared and nervous, and undoubtedly some of the world’s true sick sons of bitches were actually enjoying all of this. And then the stupidest of all things happened. Off went the house lights. The big finale of this was to be an angle where Raven took Dreamer up to the crows nest and hung him up there and “crucified him.” To get him up there and set it up, they needed the lights out. For about 2 minutes.
But for the love of God, at this point in the show, given the fire was going astray, had just been extinguished, and that people were startled to run for, turning off the lights for the purpose of doing a f**king angle is ludicrous and should never have happened. The lights going off caused people to head for the doors, When the lights came back on, there was Raven licking and biting the blood of the crucified Dreamer.
What Paul Heyman was thinking while all of this was going on is a mystery to me, but this was the worst judgment he could have possibly shown. A major mistake was made.
At this point, I went outside and watched the people come out, helping anyone I could. People were coughing from getting sprayed with the fire extinguishers, people were bleeding from getting hurt in the melee (one guy broke his nose and I was told another broke a leg), and some people were actually burned.
Terry Funk and his wife came out and he was taken to the hospital with second degree burns on his right arm, from his bicep to his elbow. He returned later to the hotel in pretty good spirits and was said to be doing well. Before leaving, Funk went ballistic backstage and was throwing chairs, (one of the which that went through the wall) yelling at people, and even knocked over an enormous industrial fan as the guys were running from him. He was upset about now he would miss out on work because, as one witness put it “his arm looked like raw meat.” He had just spent 3 three months applying salve from burns he received in Japan and now the process will start all over again.
Tommy Dreamer also suffered a broken nose as well as burns on his back from during the match. Cactus Jack was distraught backstage, and felt very bad for what had happened.
A lot of fans were saying they were done with ECW. People said they felt that ECW had violated their safety and were pissed off. And, in the interest of fairness, there were a group of people who were chanting “ECW” and the show ended. It was a truly unnerving experience for me that crossed the line.
And people wonder why I hate ECW and don't think much of Paul Heyman...

WWE Hall of Fame Inductee Edge Tribute from Tommy Dreamer
Former ECW star Tommy Dreamer looked back on the career of WWE Hall of Fame inductee Edge in his latest newspaper column. "Edge’s marvellous career was cut short by a neck injury. At the time, he was at the top of his game — the WWE’s heavyweight champion," Dreamer wrote.
"But he was forced into retirement at the orders of doctors. It came down to this: he was told if he took one more fall or bad move, he could end up paralyzed or worse — dead. He went out too soon, but he went out on top of the industry.
The neck injury was just one of many he sustained in his illustrious career. I was with him when he tore his pectoral muscle. I was also with him when he tore his achillies tendon. I could see how beat up he was after matches. Watching him in the ring, you couldn’t tell, but he walked like a 90-year-old with crippling arthritis after.
"I would help him carry his luggage to rooms because he had little to no strength in his arms, yet night after night, he continued to go into the ring and do what he most loved doing since he was a kid. I am very proud to see him being inducted in WWE Hall of Fame this year, but even more proud to call him my friend."...More?

Tommy Dreamer Discusses Life on the Road
As a professional wrestler, you spend most of your days travelling to different cities to entertain the fans. When I was with World Wrestling Entertainment, a typical work week would start on Friday, which included flying from your home to wherever the first show was.
This flight is usually the first one available that day, in case of delays. Once you land, you are responsible for renting a car.
Normally, you eat, go to the local gym, eat, go to arena, wrestle, eat and drive to the next town. If you are too tired to drive, you get a hotel room in the first town, sleep, wake up, go to the gym, eat, drive and repeat the cycle. The venues are typically anywhere between 200 to 300 miles apart (some 300 to 500 kilometres for my Canadian friends).
Anything more than that and the company will usually fly you to the next town. These non-televised, live events are a lot of fun because the matches are longer as there are no TV commercial restraints. They are a much different event than your typical televised affair, and usually a completely different experience for the fan.
Your work week ends on Tuesday night, once you finish filming televised events. You fly home on Wednesday morning, giving you essentially enough time to do your laundry, say hello to your family and get ready to go back out on Friday.
If you think that is a bad schedule, it really isn't. I have heard many stories from veteran wrestlers of the 1980s, who say they would spend 27 days on the road, return home for two and then go back out for another 27 days.
