ECW Results: An Original Goodbye

Tired of listening to taunts from Zack Ryder, Tommy Dreamer vowed that if he couldn’t defeat Ryder Tuesday night, he’d leave ECW forever, a strong statement from a Superstar who joined ECW in 1993. With all of his heart, soul and strength, Dreamer – a former two-time ECW Champion – fought the cocky youngster from Long Island, N.Y., but ultimately lost the night his career was on the line.

After a DDT from Dreamer, Ryder snuck his leg under the rope, stopping WWE Official Scott Armstrong’s three-count. Ryder was lucky to find himself in the right place at the right time. Moments later, Ryder countered Dreamer’s back suplex and pinned him, sealing the ECW Original’s fate.

Dreamer’s initial shock turned into emotion as he addressed the WWE Universe, recalling his first time in the Izod Center years ago, watching his second-ever WWE event – featuring a live Piper’s Pit – with his best friend and his father.

“This has been my dream since I was 9 years old and I think it totally proves if you have passion for what you do, you can make it anywhere. And I made it in ECW and I made it in WWE,” he said.

Dreamer went on to thank the old and the new ECW, and told the WWE Universe they are his family – a family he’ll miss.

“Thank you so much. I love you all so much,” he said, shedding a few tears.

With the loss, Dreamer – the final ECW Original on the WWE roster – left Tuesday nights, leaving his prized ECW T-shirt in the ring. Amid “E-C-Dub” chants from the WWE Universe, Dreamer paused to hug his wife at ringside and carried his daughters up the ramp as he said goodbye to the Land of the Extreme one final time. Rumor Mill - Tommy Dreamer Reportedly Gives Notice to Leave WWE

ECW wrestler Tommy Dreamer has given his notice to leave WWE, according to PWInsider.com.

Dreamer wrestled at last night's Smackdown TV taping in Orlando and he will be on Tuesday's night ECW TV show against Zack Ryder. (Read the ECW spoiler report.)

WWE built a storyline around Tommy Dreamer leaving the company this past June, but Dreamer re-signed a long-term contract with WWE and was given a near-two-month run with the ECW Title.

Lately, Dreamer has been used as an enhancement talent on ECW TV. He was booked to lose to Vance Archer the last two weeks on WWE TV.

Paul Heyman Comments on Tommy Dreamer's Win & Vince McMahon Wanting to Fire the ECW Originals

While many members of the creative team, like Ed Koskey and David Lagana, actually grew into wrestling fanatics cheering in the bleacher section of the ECW Arena during the 1990s, Vince McMahon just didn't understand the character.

"Paul," the Chairman of the entire industry would say, "what exactly IS a Tommy Dreamer? I don't get it!"

This was never more apparent than a few weeks into the re-birth of ECW as a television property in 2006, when Vince had an epiphany.

Kill off the originals. All of 'em. Well, we'll keep Sabu and Rob Van Dam, but the first week after Big Show won the ECW title, Vince wanted the newly-minted "Heel Heyman" to come out on television and publicly fire Sandman, Balls Mahoney, Little Guido, Francine, Al Snow and especially Tommy Dreamer.

Vince declared: "Time to let people know that concept is dead, and so are those guys, one and all."

With help from Talent Exec John Laurinaitis, and even a surprisingly impassioned endorsement from Stephanie McMahon-LeVesque, I was able to persuade Vince to keep the originals on board, and not because the brand needed the Bingo Hall alumnae, but because there was actual value in those talented performers.

In World Wrestling Entertainment, "focus" and "spotlight" means "money."

...So, if you're looking for me to declare a holiday because Tommy Dreamer is the ECW Champion, you're not following my diatribe. I'm very proud of the not-quite-so-pretty-anymore kid from Yonkers, New York. He won the most coveted, most valuable, most sought-after prize in WWE. He has VINCE'S ATTENTION...More?
