Triple H on Getting Bruno Sammartino and Ultimate Warrior in the WWE Hall of Fame

Triple H recently spoke to Stone Cold Steve Austin about the difficulties of getting two legendary stars into the WWE Hall of Fame. Those stars are Bruno Sammartino and The Ultimate Warrior, two men that many pro wrestling insiders believed would never be inducted.

Much of the reason for that was due to perceived bad blood that supposedly existed on both sides. The Game spoke about Sammartino specifically and what he had to do to make the move happen.

“When you’re his age, it’s a trust issue. He didn’t know me and had to learn to trust me in a business that long ago, didn’t have a whole lot of guys you could trust. He had to learn to trust me and he said it at the end, you know, he (Triple H) never once lied to me about any of this.'”

But getting the Warrior onboard with the Hall of Fame was a much different issue that presented a different set of problems.

“Warrior was different because we didn’t have a trust. He and I both said as we went though the process, you live and you learn and you grow. The day you stop learning and growing, you’re done. I was a different person when I was in WrestleMaia with him which people bring up a lot to me as if it’s a sore spot in my career. I had a bad personal experience with a guy at the moment but it was one of the coolest moments of my life.

My first WrestleMania was with The Ultimate Warrior. It was a mind bogglingly awesome opportunity for me.

We had to get past a whole lot of whole lot of stuff with him and Vince. He was a unique cat. As I stayed open to that process, I realized it was a lot of misunderstood–a lot of his anger and passion and aggression, he didn’t know how to communicate.”

Triple H has received the credit for making both inductions possible and rightfully so. Vince McMahon had all but given up on the idea of mending fences with either man, but gave Hunter the chance to reach out anyway. Sammartino joined the Hall of Fame in 2013 and The Ultimate Warrior was inducted a year later in 2014.

Dana Warrior Signs Multi-Year Deal With WWE

Dana Warrior, the widow of WWE Hall of Famer The Ultimate Warrior, announced today on the official Warrior website that she has signed a deal with WWE to become a brand ambassador for the company. Warrior wrote the following:

“The relationship with WWE has built slowly and meaningfully; the way good ones do. From day one it was my mission to preserve my late husband’s legacy and ensure his Warriors around the world continued access to his brand of inspiration. I could not have anticipated all the ways WWE would partner with me and then go beyond in sewing Ultimate Warrior into their universe’s fabric. I could not have predicted how through this company I would find and develop myself, cultivate and unearth my skills. My roots were already at WWE; they’ve given me a place to struggle through growing pains but ultimately bloom.

This contract is affirmation of crossing into a new era of Warrior. The next phase honors the Warrior Women amongst us who carry the mantle too. WWE has been championing women emerging as athletes, executives, and business pioneers all along. I am honored to be amongst so many I admire and deeply respect.

Personally this opportunity feels like the ultimate “Always Believe” moment. It makes worth every sleepless night, every sacrifice, every moment of doing what scared the blonde out of my hair to do. It is proof if you work diligently you can prove yourself an asset, not a project. It is proof that hard work feels better than being handed something. For me, it is an example to my own Warrior Girls service to others is the greatest gift we give yielding ultimate reward.”

WWE Off The Top Rope: HHH Talks Wrestlemania Moments, Working With Ultimate Warrior, Returning At MSG After His Quad Injury

The following is a recap of highlights from tonight’s new ESPN WWE Off The Top Rope segment with WWE World Heavyweight Champion Triple H:

Triple H talks about Wrestlemania 32 marking his 20th Mania match, and he says it feels like just yesterday where he was at Wrestlemania XI backstage. He talks about all of the pageantry back then with Jenny McCarthy and Pamela Anderson and how it changed the next year with getting his own match against the Ultimate Warrior. Coach asks about their relationship, and HHH says it’s mind-boggling because of Warrior’s passing, but his Mania debut doesn’t bother him like most people think. He says Vince asked him to work with Warrior, and now they built a relationship 20 years later with Warrior coming back for the WWE Hall of Fame before he passed. HHH says he stays close with Warrior’s family like it should have been, then Coach asked about HHH’s favorite Mania moment. He says Wrestlemania 28’s “End of an Era” match stands out, especially the moment at the end where they were on the stage together at the end of the night. He talks about how much it meant to him personally, and he made up plaques to mark the occasion, but it’s a night he won’t ever forget.

Coach asks about this Sunday’s crowd being bigger than the Wrestlemania III crowd, and Triple H says he’s just as nervous now as he was the first time. HHH says they may break the attendance record and him getting that type of moment one time is just really special. Coach talks about HHH’s quad injury and infamous return at Madison Square Garden, and HHH talks about how it all went down and fighting to come back. HHH says he stayed in an Alabama Embassy Suites and trained for nine months, and just worked to come back. HHH says they did return videos and hype his return, but once he made the return it clicked and it was one of the biggest nights of his career. He talks about being away for so long and having doubts, and you can’t get outside of your own and just hoped people would react the right way. He says WWE stars rely on the connection with the fans more than anything, and there’s nothing like it, so people keep coming back and hopefully that happens Sunday at AT&T Stadium.

Triple H On Losing To The Warrior At WrestleMania, Stephanie McMahon On Having A Mania Connection

Triple H on losing to The Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania 12:

"A lot of people bring it up to me as if it was a sore spot in my career. It's not. It's actually something I'm really proud of. Who can say that, in their first WrestleMania ever, they got to step in the ring with one of the biggest icons in the business?"

Stephanie on her WrestleMania connection:

"It is an unbelievable feeling of connection. Having my children being a part of it is special. Because I remember how I felt when I was their age, sitting in the stands watching the show, knowing my family was such a big part of it, cheering and booing and having the greatest time. Just like everyone else."

Dana Warrior Talks Ultimate Warrior's Reconciliation With WWE, Triple H's Role, Warrior's Passing

Recently on Talk Is Jericho, Chris Jericho interviewed the Ultimate Warrior's widow, Dana Warrior. Mrs. Warrior talked about her husband's reconciliation with WWE, her husband's untimely passing, and the importance of Warrior Award.

With respect to the reconciliation between Warrior and WWE, Mrs. Warrior said that it was a long process of two or three years, as Warrior was really hurt by the Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior DVD. According to Mrs. Warrior, Triple H's persistence played a major role in bringing the parties back together.

"I think Paul [Levesque] reached out a hand and I think Paul kept reaching out the hand, and reaching out the hand, and reaching out the hand, until finally my husband couldn't deny that he wanted to reach back." She added, "that bridge, I feel like was built in big part by Paul. I do. Between Vince [McMahon] and my husband, and then Paul just kind of remedying the hurt and the trust issues that had to go on, but it took a couple of years".

When Jericho suggested that Triple H has been able to play good cop to Vince McMahon's bad cop, as Triple H is often credited for getting Bruno Sammartino and "Macho Man" Randy Savage into the WWE Hall of Fame, Mrs. Warrior said that Warrior's relationships with Vince McMahon and Triple H were more like father/son and older/younger brothers. Mrs. Warrior claimed that her husband missed Vince McMahon even when they were embroiled in litigation with WWE and even wanted to call Vince McMahon after the birth of the couple's first daughter.

"No matter how mad my husband was at Vince, no matter how much it broke his heart with the [Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior] DVD, no matter what else, he always had such a respect for him and a love, like a genuine love," Mrs. Warrior added, "my husband was like the errant teenager who had to go off and prove himself."

Mrs. Warrior claimed that her husband had a hole in his heart and that it was only going to be filled by returning home to WWE. Warrior passed away on April 8, 2014, after being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame over WrestleMania weekend and appearing on the April 7, 2014 edition of RAW.

"I believe he was always meant to go home and take his rightful place and I don't think he could have rested had he not," she added, "that hole that I know that he had must have been filled or he wouldn't have left this place."

Mrs. Warrior recalled leaving New Orleans the morning following RAW. Apparently, Warrior had an impromptu autograph signing at the airport terminal before their flight and all of the fans at the airport stood and cheered for Warrior as the couple boarded the airplane. After taking his seat on the plane, fans would pass by, pat Warrior on the shoulder, and tell him how much he meant to them.

"All those people patted him [on the shoulder] and cheered him and told him how much he meant to them on the day that we lost him. I mean, how good that must have felt." She continued, "he made his way home and the people who loved him got to tell him that they loved him and he got to say the same thing in return."

Warrior passed away later that day and Mrs. Warrior stated that her husband was a warrior even in his death.

"When he died, he died like a warrior. I mean, he didn't crumble. He died like a warrior and I knew he was gone."

As for the Warrior Award, Mrs. Warrior said that the award breathed new life into her and it gave her a cause that was greater than her own grief and heartache.

"I was so overwhelmed by what that would mean to remember my husband like that and, like, so honored to have that named for him because that is something that will go down in tradition, like when Mattie, my younger [daughter] claws her way to the top in the wrestling world, there will still be the Warrior Award. That will be for her daddy, like, when you talk about cool legacies, that's something that you leave behind because it means something, not just for my husband, it's not an ego thing, it's a heart thing."

Mrs. Warrior said the award will be given annually and that Connor 'the Crusher' Michalek being the first recipient has special meaning for her. Mrs. Warrior indicated that inducting Michalek into WWE Hall of Fame was a meaningful moment for her like her wedding day and having her two children.

"As much hurt and devastation as it is to lose my 'happily ever after' that I had with my husband, and to know Steve [Connor's father] and Connor, and for him to lose his 'once upon a time', that broke my heart and made me want to step up and do something as best as I could for that little boy and for that little boy's legacy."

Mrs. Warrior said that she has struck up a friendship with Steve Michalek and that they check up on each other from time to time. She also indicated that Stephanie McMahon has been a great support system for her.

"I mean, holy mackerel. I wish my husband had known her because he, for all of his craziness, he was raised by a single mom, he's surrounded by women in our house, Linda McMahon, the reason he chose her [to induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame] was because he had so much reverence for her. That was sincerely who he wanted to induct him and I wish that he knew Stephanie because he would have just loved her."

In addition to these topics, Mrs. Warrior discussed Warrior's relationship with 'Macho Man' Randy Savage, her daughter wanting to become a WWE Diva, and much more. Click here to check out the entire podcast.

Read Triple H's introduction to the new book, "Ultimate Warrior: A Life Lived 'Forever'"

WWE is paying tribute to the amazing life and legacy of Ultimate Warrior in the new book, "Ultimate Warrior: 'A Life Lived 'Forever'". More than just a biography of the WWE icon, the immersive tome is a visual experience filled with unique bonus materials, including a recreation of Warrior's Oregon state wrestling license, the sheet music to his unforgettable theme music, and a replica of the mask he wore on his final Raw appearance. The book, which you can order now, also features touching introductions from Warrior's wife, Dana, and his friend, Triple H, which you can read below.

It was a night twenty years in the making. I stood with eager anticipation and looked over my shoulder to see one of the biggest legends in the history of our business, the Ultimate Warrior, right before he was inducted into the 2014 WWE Hall of Fame. Everyone expected intensity and for him to rant and rave in his speech, but in that moment I saw one of the toughest hard-as-nails men in this world standing there with a single tear rolling down his unpainted face. He was beaming with pride, because on each of his arms, escorting him to the stage, were his two beautiful daughters, Indy and Mattie. I walked over to him and whispered in his ear, “It was all worth it, just to see that.” He smiled back and simply said, “Thank you.”

It was a moment he thought would never happen, and a moment I will never forget. Warrior had a storied past with WWE, both in and out of the ring. He was unhappy with almost everything in WWE and incredibly outspoken about his opinions without any regard for the consequences. There was bad blood on both sides, and at one point, it was inconceivable that the Ultimate Warrior would come back to the WWE, let alone be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Even my first impression of Warrior was not a favorable one. It was 1996 and Vince McMahon told me I would be competing in my very first WrestleMania against one of the most revered Superstars of all time, the Ultimate Warrior, who was returning to the WWE after being gone for many years. It was the opportunity of a lifetime, but the process wound up being less than positive. Warrior had blown me off all week, and I wound up actually meeting him for the first time on the afternoon of WrestleMania, after the show had already started and Vince McMahon had already gone to the ring to do commentary. The guy I met lived up to every bit of his horrible reputation.

He was paranoid, mistrusting, and abrasive, and it left a bitter taste in my mouth. But at the end of the day, the Ultimate Warrior was a huge part of WWE history, which is why I decided to reach out to him over a decade later.

I had heard rumblings that Warrior might be interested in having a conversation because he had just signed an independent deal with 2K to appear in the WWE 2K14 video game. I gave him a call, and we spoke briefly; we were both very guarded and careful with what we said. And when I heard about the press conference 2K was going to have to announce Warrior’s involvement, I knew I had to go. I went with the sole intention to meet with him face to face. I knew if there was ever going to be trust between the two of us, we needed to look each other in the eye.

Warrior later said the effort I made to look him in the eye meant a lot, and it was just the olive branch he needed. Don’t get me wrong, we didn’t hit it off right away, but after a long period of time, a mutual respect and friendship was born. We were both men who had grown beyond the business that had once defined us. We spoke about life, our families, and our children. We found a common ground and agreed that a man’s character is what defines him. I promised that I would always keep my word, and he promised to always shoot straight with me. When he finally signed his contract, he wrote, “Congrats, we did it! You did really good, Paul. You kept your word and stepped up. I appreciate it. Get me some hard copies to sign, and let’s get to work. It’s good to not be at odds with Vince and WWE anymore. Great to be back home! Consider me your ally from now on. Relay the same to Vince. Always Believe, Warrior.”

Warrior told me that his wife and children were absolutely everything to him, but that they didn’t know much about his career. They had never seen him wrestle and had never been exposed to WWE. He wanted them to know that he was more than just “Dad,” and for them to experience what the Ultimate Warrior meant to so many people. During the week of WrestleMania 30, they got their chance.

Warrior was inducted in the 2014 WWE Hall of Fame, he stood on the stage at WrestleMania 30 in front of 75,000 fans giving him a standing ovation at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, and on Monday Night Raw, he reminded all of us that the Warrior spirit courses through our veins.

The very next day, Warrior shockingly passed away.

His story is almost poetic, this great man and icon who had come full circle in his life and reconciled with so many people personally and professionally. When I saw him at the end of WrestleMania week, he had this look of peace and happiness, like a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders. It seemed he had found closure. And he did exactly what he said he was going to do, leaving behind a legacy that will live forever in the hearts and minds of not only the Warrior Nation, but also the most important people in his life—his wife and children.

Warrior was one of the most intense people I have ever met. He had an unwavering belief in himself and a passion for life. He signed the words “Always Believe” because he was creating a legacy of inspiration that would live forever. My experience with the Ultimate Warrior was one that I will never forget. He taught me a lot about life and forgiveness, and it will always mean a lot to me that he and I forged a special connection. But true to his words, the biggest takeaway of our friendship is that I will indeed “Always Believe.”

'Rap is the new wrestling': how hip-hop heavyweights compare with WWE stars

New York rap and fashion maven A$AP Rocky thinks hip-hop has become like the theatrical, body-slam heavy world of WWE. Speaking to Elliott Wilson at a live recording of the CRWN hip-hop podcast at the Tribeca film festival, the 26-year-old rapper said: “Rap is the new wrestling,” before adding that in the world of contemporary hip-hop, rappers pick a strange name, say some ridiculous things and then wait until people pay attention (isn’t that just a guide to becoming famous in 2015?). He has a point though, even if there is more than a hint of irony in that theory coming from a rapper whose name is A$AP Rocky and whose biggest hit was called Fuckin’ Problems complaining about outlandish and gauche hip-hop acts with daft names. We’ve taken his assertion as a starting point and tried to figure out which WWE superstars (past and present) line up with contemporary rap stars...More?

WWE Issues Response to Justin Roberts' Blog on Connor Michalek's WWE Hall of Fame Induction

WWE issued the following statement in response to the blog on Connor Michalek that former WWE announcer Justin Roberts posted last night:

“It is offensive to suggest that WWE and its executives had anything but altruistic intentions in honoring Connor and his legacy with The Warrior Award. In conjunction with Connor's father, Connor's Cure was established by Stephanie McMahon and Paul Levesque to raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer, and to honor a boy that so many people within the WWE family came to love. The fund is managed by the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation and has already raised more than $200,000 for pediatric cancer research.

In addition, following the Ultimate Warrior's impassioned Hall of Fame speech last year encouraging WWE to recognize its unsung heroes, the Warrior Award was established in his memory to honor those who exhibit unwavering strength and perseverance, and who live life with the courage and compassion that embodies the indomitable spirit of the Ultimate Warrior. With the full support and input of Ultimate Warrior's widow, Dana Warrior, Connor Michalek was the first recipient of the Warrior Award, and moving forward the award will be given annually to acknowledge other unsung heroes among WWE's employees and fans.

WWE is proud to use our global platforms to raise awareness for important social causes, including Connor's Cure as well as our longstanding partnership with Make A Wish, our on-going partnership with Susan G. Komen, which has resulted in more than $1.5 million in funds raised, and our international partnership with Special Olympics.”

Justin Roberts Felt WWE Handled Connor “The Crusher” Michalek Story Without Sincerity

Former WWE ring announcer Justin Roberts has opened up in a heartfelt blog titled "Believe Half of What You See and Portions of What You Hear" over at his Medium.com blog which includes photos.

The longtime ring announcer who was was employed by WWE from 2002 until his release in 2014 discusses his thoughts and feelings on his friend Connor “The Crusher” Michalek, WWE and his recent Hall of Fame induction, which from his perspective wasn't told the way he experienced it - It's a long but insightful read, that will bring a tear to your eye.

Hi, my name is Justin Roberts. I was an announcer at World Wrestling Entertainment for about 12 years. Sometimes when you’ve worked there and you speak up about something company-related, it’s easy to be painted as a bitter, ex employee. What’s strange is that my unhappiness at this dream job didn’t start after I left; it started while I was there.

The last time I wrote a blog here, it was about how I loved professional wrestling. I was with the company at the time and loved (and I still love) professional wrestling. There were reasons why it wasn’t titled “I love WWE.” My unhappiness started in my last couple of years with the company and I was actually just as happy when they decided not to renew my contract as I was on the day that I signed. They told me I wasn’t getting fired, there was nothing that I did wrong, that they were going a different direction and the door was always open. I politely closed it behind me and with that said, I’ll now share one of the contributing factors on why I wouldn’t want to go back to this company.

I have always been a fan of the movie “Basic” where “telling the story right” is the theme. WWE also tells a story, week after week. Sometimes their stories seem “real” and we forget that they’re a company… that tells stories. Remember “Macho Man” Randy Savage’s jealousy over Elizabeth and Hulk Hogan? Matt Hardy and Edge battling over relationship reasons, CM Punk taking the title and leaving the company? Daniel Bryan overcoming the evil bosses who did everything to keep him down? These were memorable, reality-inspired storylines, but overall, they were stories that WWE told us fans.

This past weekend at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, they told a story. While using real life people and real stories, they did what they do best: they told a story and they didn’t let the facts get in the way.

Last year, just days before his unfortunate, sudden death, the legendary Ultimate Warrior suggested during his Hall of Fame induction speech that WWE should honor the hardworking people who work behind the scenes at the company. He spoke about those people who worked there: “Some of them for years, 20–25–30 years,” he continued, “To have a category in the Hall of Fame where you honor these people.” Unfortunately, the WWE track record shows that many people who work there and give their lives to the company for 20–30 years don’t get rewarded, they get released once they’ve been there for too long.

I can name numerous employees that I worked with at WWE who would be deserving of such an award. Those people devoted all of their time and energy to WWE, because they loved their jobs and thought they were working for a good cause. A guy like Mark Yeaton who was let go on the eve of what would have been his 30th anniversary. He was the guy that worked all morning and afternoon in the production office of the TV shows, then sat at ringside and rang the bell for the show, while communicating on headset with the bosses to make sure everything ran smoothly. Then he would return to the production office where he made sure the operations ran as they should while accommodating everyone who approached him about needing something done. Then he would go through the locker rooms to make sure no one left anything behind. He even cleaned up the towels and did anything else asked of him. Mark would take a bullet for the company and would have made an excellent and deserving award recipient, but he was let go for a budget cut. (You probably won’t hear much from Mark publicly as far as saying anything negative about the company, or the many others like Mark, as their employee contracts prevent them from speaking out. Mine doesn’t.).

Who else could be a good nominee? Lots of folks. There are so many hardworking men and women that work behind the scenes at that company. How about Sue, who arranges all of the great Make-A-Wish events, Adam who manages fan services…All of these people deserve recognition by the company, and that’s what the Warrior was trying to say. But the question is, how much publicity could those awards make for the company? Or how could you market that award to mean something to the public?

So rather than honor those people that you don’t see or hear about , who work hard to put on the shows that we all love, the company decided to tell a different story. This year, they spliced and spun the Warrior’s speech to make the award about “warriors” outside of the company, because that might make for a better story — and for better publicity.

Connor 'The Crusher' Michalek To Receive Warrior Award At 2015 WWE Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony

WWE fan Connor Michalek to receive first-ever Warrior Award at 2015 WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Connor Michalek, a Pittsburgh native and passionate WWE fan who passed away last year from cancer, will be the first-ever recipient of the Warrior Award, which will be presented each year at the WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

The Warrior Award will be given to someone who has exhibited unwavering strength and perseverance, and who lives life with the courage and compassion that embodies the indomitable spirit of WWE Hall of Famer, The Ultimate Warrior. This year, the award will be presented by The Ultimate Warrior's widow, Dana Warrior, and WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan to Steve Michalek, Connor's father.

With the love of his family and WWE Superstars, as well as the tremendous care by Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, Connor battled cancer like a true warrior for as long as he could, and his charisma made him a local celebrity in Pittsburgh. Connor's spirit inspired WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon and WWE Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events & Creative, Paul "Triple H" Levesque to launch "Connor's Cure," a fund dedicated to furthering Pediatric cancer research. Donations can be made by visiting givetochildrens.org/CONNORSCURE.

"On behalf of my family, we are truly humbled and honored that WWE will present an award in my husband's name each year at the WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony," said Dana Warrior. "Connor displayed all of the positive traits that Warrior stood for, and he is the perfect recipient for this inaugural award. I am sure that Warrior is smiling today, knowing that this award is being given to a true warrior."

"My family is forever grateful for the gift that WWE, its Superstars, Divas and executives gave to Connor," said Steve Michalek. "They made him smile and encouraged him to continue fighting. His visits backstage, and his time in the ring with Daniel Bryan, brought Connor true joy and undoubtedly extended his life, giving us more time with him. Now, with this award and Connor's Cure, Connor's legacy will live on."

"Connor Michalek had a profound impact on so many people," said McMahon. "His spirit and love of life were so strong, you would have never known he was sick. I can think of no better way to honor Connor, than by recognizing him with our highest honor, the first fan to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, as a Warrior."
