SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- Two women in Cincinnati had better leave big tips the next time they get their hair done.
They survived strokes thanks to fast action by their beauticians, who were taking part in a novel program to raise stroke awareness as they clipped, straightened and braided their customers' hair.
One stylist noticed that a woman's speech was slurred, and called for help. Another woman called her hairdresser weeks after having been in the shop, describing symptoms she was having.
"The beautician recognized it as signs of a stroke, called 911, walked to the woman's apartment and waited with her until an ambulance arrived," said Dr. Dawn Kleindorfer, a University of Cincinnati neurologist who led the project and reported results at a recent American Stroke Association conference in San Francisco, California.
Beauticians and barbers increasingly are being used the way churches are to spread the word about stroke, cancer and other diseases. What they can do may be as important as any doctor, drug or diagnostic test.
That is because the key factor to surviving a stroke and limiting its damage is time. The main treatment -- a clot-busting medicine called tPA -- must be given within three hours of the start of symptoms to do any good. But fewer than 5 percent of stroke sufferers wind up getting it.
"By far the biggest reason is people delay going into the hospital because they don't know the signs or realize it's an emergency," Kleindorfer said.
She signed up dozens of stylists in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Atlanta, Georgia, in 2005 for a pilot project to teach customers the warning signs....CNN.com

Is Obama Black Enough?
For all the predictable outrage Joe Biden's recent comments about Barack Obama elicited, the gaffe put a spotlight on one of the more unfortunate forces fueling Obamania. Ever since Barack Obama first ascended the national stage at the 2004 Democratic convention, pundits have been tripping over themselves to point out the difference between him and the average Joe from the South Side. Obama is biracial, and has a direct connection with Africa. He is articulate, young and handsome. He does not feel the need to yell "Reparations now!" into any available microphone.
But this is a double-edged sword. As much as his biracial identity has helped Obama build a sizable following in middle America, it's also opened a gap for others to question his authenticity as a black man. In calling Obama the "first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," the implication was that the black people who are regularly seen by whites — or at least those who aspire to the highest office in the land — are none of these things. But give Biden credit — at least he acknowledged Obama's identity....You can read the rest of the article here.

New Era Fighting
There is an organization starting up called New Era Fighting (NEF). They are trying to merge mixed martial arts with storytelling, sort of UFC meets the WWE. They are currently accepting applications for fighters and models. I think this has great potential if they pick people with physical and acting talent.

Blood and Guts from Triple H
By THE LILSBOYS
JANUARY 11, 2007
There are some wrestling matches you never forget. It might be because of one big stunt, a passing of the torch moment or simply that the bout was just so damn good from start to finish. D-Generation X v Rated RKO at WWE's New Year's Revolution PPV will always stick in our heads for another reason - the guts of Triple H.
If any regular person tore a quadriceps tendon they would barely even be able to get to the phone to call a doctor, let alone finish a wrestling match in front of thousands of fans. But that is exactly what Triple H did - battling through what must have been unbearable pain for five minutes to finish his bout.
Ironically it came six years to the day since he returned from an eight-month lay-off with an identical injury, and it was initially feared this one may end his career.
The good news is that although The Game will miss a lot of action including WrestleMania, he should be back in time for August's SummerSlam....You can read the rest of the article here.
