Time Magazine Says UFC Worth Over Billion Dollars

The following is a quote from an article on Women's MMA in TIME magazine:

And see a payday. Over the past few years the popularity of mixed martial arts, the full-combat sport that combines elements of boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, jujitsu and other disciplines, has exploded. One card in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the most prominent men's MMA organization, whose fights are shown on Spike TV and pay-per-view, drew more television viewers than the baseball playoffs in the all-important 18-to-34-year-old-male demographic. The UFC surpassed HBO's 2006 pay-per-view boxing take and is probably worth more than $1 billion...More?

Jackass Angle Cancelled for SummerSlam

The planned Jackass vs. Umaga match has been cancelled. Sometime during the last week the deal fell apart. WWE had planned on some of the Jackass guys being at the Great American Bash PPV and do some of their stunts on Umaga all night and end up costing Umaga the title in the Hardy match which would have setup Umaga vs. Jackass at Summerslam.

Johnny Noxville had planned to do a few TV appearances for WWE leading up to the SummerSlam PPV but after the Benoit family tragedy happened, Jackass and Knoxville started distancing themselves from WWE. It started out with a few promised TV and PPV appearances, then it came down to Jackass only working the SummerSlam PPV then it ended with the whole idea being scrapped.

Once Knoxville pulled out, WWE decided to scrap the idea altogether. Originally WWE had planned on the Jackass crew defeating Umaga in the match.

Jose "Pele" Landi Gets His Kicks in Bodog Fight's Paradise Lost

His name suggests he should be using his powerful legs to direct soccer balls past helpless goalkeepers, but Jose "Pele" Landi prefers to use them to punish his opponents in the ring.

Raised in Brazil, Landi eschewed his country's national sport (despite being quite good - hence his nickname), instead choosing a career in mixed martial arts. Soccer's loss was certainly MMA's gain.

Since turning pro 15 years ago, the 33-year-old has become a world renowned fighter whose deadly Muay Thai knees have put some of the biggest names in the sport to sleep. In fact, Landi's professional MMA record of 22-12 reads like a who's who of the sport, with impressive wins over fellow legends like Pat Miletich and Matt Hughes, and hard-fought losses to guys like Chuck Liddell and Carlos Newton...More?

Prosecutor Appeals After Judge Drops Rape Charges Against Liberian Over Lack of Interpreter

The prosecutor in the case of a Liberian native charged with repeatedly raping and molesting a 7-year-old girl said Monday that he is filing an appeal of a controversial judge's ruling that dismissed all charges because an interpreter who spoke the suspect's rare West African dialect could not be found.

Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy called the ruling last Tuesday by Judge Katherine Savage "improper," adding that his office has "requested that an appeal be taken to reverse the court's order."...More?

Violent sport making belated debut on film

Ultimate fighting? Now that's a late hit.

Hollywood is so behind the curve on cultural trends that most fads are over before the movie biz can figure out how to exploit them. So I shouldn't have been shocked to discover that someone is only now -- after Ultimate Fighting Championship has become a huge ratings champ on Spike TV, made the cover of Sports Illustrated and been mocked by the Onion and "The Daily Show" -- making a film about the wild 'n' woolly sport that has gained a chokehold on the elusive 18-to-34 male demographic.

The picture, called "Redbelt," was shooting in Los Angeles last month...More?
