An ode to Ripken and Gwynn

Thank you, Cal Ripken, Jr. and Tony Gwynn.

As Major League Baseball contorts itself through this last grim spasm of the Steroid Era and replaces Hank Aaron with Barry Bonds in the record book, for one glorious day our nation can turn its jaundiced eyes to Cooperstown. There, two of the classiest men in the history of sports will remind us that incredible individual achievements needn't be accompanied by boorish individualism.

It is poetic that Ripken and Gwynn, exemplars of a bygone era, are entering the Baseball Hall of Fame together...More?

USA wants old stars to fix 'Raw' ratings

USA became the most-watched cable network in the late 1990s because of ''Monday Night Raw.'' Almost a decade later, USA is looking for more attitude from WWE and even has offered a story line to the writing team.

Word is USA has told WWE it wants retired stars Chris Jericho and ''Stone Cold'' Steve Austin back on the show because it wants ratings. Wrestlers such as Jericho and Austin were who made fans watch ''Raw'' from start to finish in fear of missing a great moment. ''Raw'' lately has become a 15-minute fast-forward-athon with results that have become predictable, and ratings that have become predictably bad for USA.

I'm sure you'll agree with each and every one...More?

One Train Wreck For Another

Eric Bischoff has an excellent post on his blog concerning the washed-up wrestlers that have been dragged off the shelf for interviews:

Lindsay Lohan bumps Joanie Laurer from CNN.

I can’t decide if I’m disappointed or relieved. I mean, my twisted sense of humor and occasional tendency to get a glimpse of the truly bizarre compelled me to momentarily anticipate Joanie Laurer’s appearance on Nancy Grace last night. But the more grounded, rational part of me was relieved that another washed up, scorned, irrelevant, piece of “talent” wasn’t going to be given an opportunity to use the Benoit tragedy to grab their last 3 minutes of camera time. Especially Joanie Lauer. I mean what in the hell would this train wreck have to contribute? It would be like having O.J. Simpson on CNN to discuss the NFL’s responsibility to help prevent spousal abuse!...More?

Norris now stands accused of illegally marrying Meister. She was charged with bigamy and scheming to defraud her husband...More?
