Mildred Burke - Female Star in the Make-Believe World of Wrestling

She’s not a household name today, and never really was one, even in her heyday, but as Jeff Leen explains in “The Queen of the Ring,” Mildred Burke was the dominating figure in women’s wrestling for 20 years, “its Babe Ruth and its Jackie Robinson.” When she died in 1989 at 73, the Associated Press obituary reported that Burke had been women’s wrestling champion from 1936 to 1955, that she had won more than 5,000 matches against women and more than 150 against men. Mr. Leen says that at one time she earned $50,000 a year, as much as Joe DiMaggio, though everyone involved in professional wrestling lied about the money, just as they lied about everything else...More?

Shaq Denied Entrance to White House

So last week on The Mike Wise Show, Shaquille O'Neal posed one of the timeless questions of our era: If I show up, unannounced, at the White House, could I get in?

Turns out this was no idle speculation. It was an actual bet, between Shaq and one of his handlers, with the loser owing the winner 1,000 push-ups. Even as bloggers were wondering which celebrities might have the clout to manage that feat, Shaq laid out the guidelines Monday night at Verizon Center, while prepping for his turn as guest host of WWE's RAW.

"The rule was I couldn't use any of my political connections," he explained. "Couldn't show a badge. I couldn't call anybody, because I've got a couple of best friends that work for the Secret Service. So that was the rule. They took my phone away, I jumped in a cab, went up there, and the guy wouldn't let me in."

Just a straight-up no, then?

"I went to the gate," he said. "They were nice. They said, 'Shaq, we can't do it.' I said, 'I understand.' Understood."...More?

ROH Adds Bret Hart to New Events

Recap of Triple H on Robot Chicken

Triple H's appearance on Robot Chicken aired last night. Triple H offered to go home since nobody wanted to face him. Actress Dakota Fanning came out to promote a movie but attacked Triple H to start a match. John Cena arrived in the sketch (Cena didn't actually work on this project) and double crossed Dakota and the skit ended with them beating her with a chair as they promoted her children's movie.
