Hardly a hero: Wrestler was a bully and a killer

Clarence Seeliger is a DeKalb County Superior Court judge and the former chair of the Georgia Commission on Family Violence. He had this to say concerning the Benoit killings:

...The classic question whenever these types of crimes occur is "What happened to this 'good' man to make him spontaneously kill his wife and son?"

The question never should be asked in this case. It was not spontaneous. It was part of a long cycle, sadly familiar to those who deal with domestic violence. Benoit attempted to control the woman he said he loved by threats of violence. Failing that, he killed his wife and son, and in his last cowardly act, instead of facing the responsibility for his actions, hanged himself.

Georgia is tied for seventh in the nation in the category of men killing women. But things are changing. Nearly every judicial circuit in Georgia has a domestic violence task force coordinating the efforts of the community. There are now shelters throughout the state staffed with victim's advocates. Law officers undergo continuous training dealing with issues of domestic violence. But it is never enough...More?
