Local grappling instructor weighs in on whether “The Wrestler” tells the true story

Jimmy Zaveski didn’t have to see “The Wrestler” to know what it’s like to be a professional wrestler. He’s been a fan since he was a kid, and he competed in the ring himself for the first time in 1993. So most of what’s shown in the movie was old hat to the man everyone calls “Jimmy Z.” Save a naked Marisa Tomei, of course.

That significant Hollywood turn aside, Zaveski was impressed enough with the authenticity of the movie to have already seen it twice. He’s not sure if Mickey Rourke will win a Best Actor Oscar tonight for his portrayal of Randy “The Ram” Robinson, but he calls the flick a winner.

“It’s a sad story,” said Zaveski, who runs the KYDA Pro wrestling school outside Manassas, “but it’s pretty much dead on.”...More?
