Mayweather retires, cancels De La Hoya rematch

After Floyd Mayweather Jr. easily outpointed Carlos Baldomir to win the welterweight championship in November 2006, he stood at the podium at the post-fight news conference and broke down in tears as he stunningly announced his retirement from boxing.

Despite the emotional outpouring, few believed Mayweather was serious, rather that he had simply been overcome by the moment. As it turned out, he had been.

Less than two months later, Mayweather agreed to face Oscar De La Hoya. In May 2007, Mayweather outpointed him in a fight that shattered all boxing revenue and pay-per-view records. After beating Ricky Hatton in December, plans were in motion for Mayweather-De La Hoya II to take place Sept. 20. But cross it off the schedule.

Mayweather, 31, announced his retirement from boxing again on Friday in a move that appears much more serious than his impromptu declaration two years ago...More?

Kudos to Floyd Mayweather

Quote from Jim Ross:

"Floyd Mayweather is something else. The best celeb/athlete I think the WWE has ever worked with at a Wrestlemania. The Floyd-(Big) Show match far exceeded my expectations. Floyd was so gracious to me after the event, as he signed one of the gloves he used at WM 24. He also said he would love for yours truly to call his fights, which made me feel really good."

Comparing Mayweather-Show to Austin-Tyson

I’m still not over the site of Floyd Mayweather in a WWE ring. Honestly, I had a hard time sleeping last night just thinking of it. I haven’t been this excited for a celeb-wrestling angle since Pacman Jones joined TNA! Just kidding. No, I haven’t been this amped since Mike Tyson appeared on RAW in January 1998. That angle ranks as one of the best ever in my books.

So, I got to thinking: If Money May will actually be involved in WM 24, can this angle trump Tyson-Austin from ten years ago? I most certainly think so...More?
