This Day in Wrestling History

The Monday Night Wars continued, WCW Monday Nitro's 4.6 rating defeated WWF Monday Night RAW's 3.6 rating. RAW in Uniondale, New York featured Owen Hart defeating WWF Champion Shawn Michaels by disqualification when Triple H broke one of his crutches over Hart's head while he had Michaels in the sharpshooter. Nitro was just over 200 miles away in Baltimore, Maryland, and featured Ultimo Dragon defeating WCW Cruiserweight Champion Eddie Guerrero by submission to win the title for the second time, Booker T winning his first of a record six WCW World Television Titles from Disco Inferno, and a main event of WCW World Champion Sting defeating Hollywood Hulk Hogan.
December 29, 1997

Mick Foley (as Mankind) defeated The Rock for his first WWF(E) Title after Stone Cold Steve Austin returned knocking out The Rock with a steel chair. The show would air on the following Monday, January 4, 1999. That night Tony Schiavone would reveal the result during WCW Monday Nitro, airing live that night, noting that Mankind as champion "ought to put a lot of butts in the seats." Schiavone would later claim Eric Bischoff fed him that line to say. D-Generation X celebrated with Foley after the match.

On an edition of ECW on SyFy from East Rutherford, New Jersey, Tommy Dreamer wrestled his last match for WWE's version of ECW, facing Zack Ryder in a match where Dreamer promised to leave ECW if he lost.

December 19th Raw TV Ratings Breakdown: Main Event with New Champs Disappoints

In what is a very bad sign, the overrun for the CM Punk, Daniel Bryan & Zack Ryder vs. Alberto Del Rio, The Miz & Dolph Ziggler match gained only 59,000 viewers. This is almost impossible as people tune into USA to see the next TV show. This means wrestling fans were tuning out in large numbers. Fans tuned out mostly during the first part of the match but viewership picked up some at 11pm.

The RAW six-man main event did a 2.67 rating, which might be the lowest rated RAW main event of this year...More?

WWE-Mattel Updates

Representatives from Mattel appeared at the Ringsidefest in New York City this week to take questions from fans in attendance. Below are some highlights:

* Sin Cara’s first figure will be released in April or May of next year. Other new figures debuting in the near future include Jinder Mahal, The Bella Twins, Jerry Lawler and CM Punk with a cloth version of his Best in the World t-shirt.

* Mattel reps have spoke with Zack Ryder about including his Internet Title on a future Ryder action figure. In regards to a replica Internet Title, Mattel said they would have to get Ryder’s permission first.

* New versions of the Diva figures are also being worked on, including Beth Phoenix and Kelly Kelly.

* As noted before, Jim Ross is working with Mattel on a new project but it’s too early for details. Ross will be helping them promote a new product.

* There will be a Miss Elizabeth figure available towards the end of this year online and if her figure sells well, they’re looking at doing one for Sherri Martel and others. Mattel had a good relationship with Randy Savage before he passed so his estate will allow them to produce new figures in the future.

* Mattel can’t make figures that break bones, bleed or bruise due to WWE’s PG content.

* Mattel is doing a series of figures with Toys R Us where each figure in a set comes with a piece and when you buy all the figures, the pieces assemble to make a Michael Cole figure. Mattel figured people would want a Cole figure but would not buy him.

* Mattel doesn’t have the rights to do Brock Lesnar figures as those are held by Jakks Pacific right now. They also don’t have rights to Matt Hardy figures and have no plans to do a figure on him.

* There will be no Owen Hart figure because Owen’s widow asked them not to do anything with him.

* They will be doing a Tribute to the Troops set with four Superstars next year through K-Mart that will be sold for charity. A Troops ring will also be available.

* Mattel wanted to do a figure for Steve Austin’s old Ringmaster gimmick but WWE wants the figures to represent their iconic versions, not the older versions right now.

Rumor Mill - Vince McMahon "Freaked Out" Over Zack Ryder Shirt

Zack Ryder's t-shirt that says "Take Care Spike Your Hair" caused some problems with Vince McMahon according to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter. McMahon "freaked out" when he saw the shirt because it had the word "spike" and he didn't want any name or association to SpikeTV and TNA.

McMahon was going to have the shirt pulled off the shelf but Ryder's merchandise has been such a hot seller that he decided to sell what they had made of the shirt and stop production of it.

Successors to The Game's Throne?

With COO Triple H putting his corporate title on the line at Night of Champions, the WWE Universe has to wonder: Who stands to gain the most should he lose this Sunday? WWE.com offers up several candidates to replace The Game:

JOHN LAURINAITIS
WWE’s Executive VP of Talent Relations has repeatedly involved himself in Triple H’s affairs ... and sometimes done so without the COO’s knowledge, as documented in recent weeks with the signing of Kevin Nash. Subsequently, upon Nash’s release from WWE last Monday, Laurinaitis released in a statement that “ultimately, [he doesn’t] make the rules around here.” That could very well change if Laurinaitis’ boss were to lose this Sunday.

SHAWN MICHAELS
Despite being Triple H’s best friend, the WWE Hall of Famer has also shared a hostile history with The Game, including a much-storied rivalry that lasted four years before they reconciled as D-Generation X in 2007. HBK has stated on many occasions that he has retired from active competition in WWE. Who’s to say, however, that he no longer wants to remain an integral part of WWE? Becoming COO would certainly give The Showstopper a lucrative new lease on life with the company.

THEODORE LONG
One could argue that being a successful General Manager in WWE is more difficult than becoming a 13-time World Champion. Yet since 2004, Teddy Long has not only survived in the role – cultivating top Superstars, deflecting power struggles with personnel and withstanding the wrath of a WWE Chairman all the while – he has made the Friday night brand Syfy’s most successful show. Long’s motivation for dethroning The King of Kings could be the fact that he no longer wants to simply “survive.” Perhaps he realizes that, if he seizes power, he can position himself to actually thrive in WWE’s top spot.

STEPHANIE McMAHON
Despite Triple H’s insistence otherwise, CM Punk and others are convinced that the COO’s wife is already pulling the strings and making the decisions around WWE. Stephanie has no love for Punk, certainly, but the temptation to take over in an official capacity could prove pivotal come Sunday night. After all, first and foremost, she’s a McMahon – a surname with a history of commanding power and authority by any means necessary.

ZACK RYDER

Wait, what? Say what you want, but The Long Island Iced Z knows how to make the most of a situation. He has established himself outside the ring as an Internet Champion with his own web series, and swayed enough Broskis in the WWE Universe to earn a spot as an assistant to SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long. In short, he knows how to manipulate just about anything to his advantage. Does anyone take him seriously as a threat? Probably not. But, that might all be part of Ryder’s plan to help CM Punk – a staunch Iced Z supporter – and assume control of the organization that once refused to pay him any attention.

THE ANONYMOUS RAW GENERAL MANAGER

Ever since Triple H became Chief Operating Officer, the only mystery bigger than the Raw GM’s identity has been his or her absence. There have been no flickering arena lights, no ominous e-mail sounds, and thankfully no reason for Michael Cole to arrogantly proclaim, “And I quote.” However, now that The Game has put his corporate title on the line at Night of Champions, the anonymous Raw GM may view this as a perfect occasion to log on and regain control of Monday nights. Will the laptop return to its podium prominence on Raw SuperShow? For that matter, could any of the aforementioned COO candidates be the Anonymous Raw General Manager?

Internet Title: Is it time?

Within less than a decade, the world has embraced the digital age in ways never expected, especially following the births of Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. The squared circle is no exception to the increasing trends of hashtags and “Likes,” and perhaps that’s why many WWE Universe members believe that the Internet Title – introduced and carried by Zack Ryder – may be the ideal symbol of modern-day sports-entertainment.

“Two of the four WWE programs in the U.S. are only on the internet,” explained Ryder, citing WWE.com’s exclusive shows, WWE NXT and “WWE Superstars.” He continued, “Everything is on the internet. People watch TV on their computer or on their phones or iPads. There should be an Internet Championship in WWE. They should be bribing me to defend my title on the internet, on television, wherever.”

Despite Long Island Iced-Z’s somewhat spurious reign, the oft tweeting Superstar may have stumbled onto something genius in an Internet Championship – the perfect icon of present-day relevance and the potential beginning of a cutting edge tradition. Some strongly believe that such a prize should be sanctioned by WWE and defended regularly, much like the Television Titles once slung over the shoulders of legendary titans in NWA, WCW and ECW.

According to the Long Island lothario, the broski-faced Internet Title is rightfully his – recognized by WWE officials or not. And even if Ryder’s actions can inspire a change and yield a new golden prize for a digital era in WWE, he vows it’s not going anywhere.

“I’m never going to defend this title. I’ve earned this championship. I won it fair and square,” argued a ruffled Ryder. “My YouTube show has more than four million views, I dominate Twitter. I’m the first champion, I’m the last champion, I’m the only champion.”...More?

WWE RAW’s Michael Cole, Zack Ryder Match Bombs After Big HHH Segment

During the WrestleMania build, WWE could generally count on the feud between the heel Michael Cole and the babyface Jerry Lawler to spike viewership interest.

That interest appears to have faded, as a significant portion of Monday’s WWE RAW audience tuned out during Cole’s match with Zack Ryder.

According to a quarterly ratings breakdown at F4WOnline.com, Triple H’s “State of WWE Address” popped an impressive 3.8 cable coverage rating, representing one of the biggest “top of the hour” spikes in a while for the weekly wrestling telecast. The segment with Zack Ryder versus Michael Cole, the match that Triple H’s promo built, fell to a 3.1 rating, which conceivably represents a loss of more than one million viewers.

Given the immense fan interest in Triple H’s follow-up to the angle with Vince McMahon, that segment undoubtedly benefited from “curiosity buzz” that would not customarily trickle over to the next segment. But a drop of this magnitude, especially since the Cole match was plugged during Triple H’s promo, is still a disappointment.

The low rating, of course, also speaks negatively to Ryder’s drawing ability, indicating that his online buzz has not yet translated to television interest.

Zack Ryder Comments on the Origins of his YouTube Show, WWE's Reaction, More

WWE wrestler Zack Ryder talked about the origins of his weekly YouTube show and feeling like he has nothing to lose by trying to promote himself in an interview with Alfonso Castillo of Newsday promoting Monday's Raw from Long Island, N.Y.

"At first, I was afraid," Ryder said when asked if he thought he would catch heat from WWE management for the show. "I thought, ‘Am I going to get in trouble?’ But I’m not trying to cause any problems. I just want to get my name out there and create my own opportunity, and make some money for the company and for myself... As far as I know, I haven’t been punished.

"But, before I started the YouTube show, I was at the bottom of the card - the bottom. How much worse of a position could I have dropped to, you know? So it had to go up. That was my mindset. I was just sick of being at the bottom, knowing I could be so much more. It was all or nothing, basically.”
