Pro Wrestling Explained

...Of course it's pretend. It's a show! Let me ask you: When you discuss movies with someone do you feel the urge to let everyone know that the actors were only pretending? Exactly.

Why then, when the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) shows up with their carnival do so many people have to exclaim loudly: "Boy, those wrestlers, huh? They're not for real, are they?"

Complaining about pro wrestling being fake is like going to a monastery and chastising the residents for praying too much. You either engage with it or go home...More?

Mayweather retires, cancels De La Hoya rematch

After Floyd Mayweather Jr. easily outpointed Carlos Baldomir to win the welterweight championship in November 2006, he stood at the podium at the post-fight news conference and broke down in tears as he stunningly announced his retirement from boxing.

Despite the emotional outpouring, few believed Mayweather was serious, rather that he had simply been overcome by the moment. As it turned out, he had been.

Less than two months later, Mayweather agreed to face Oscar De La Hoya. In May 2007, Mayweather outpointed him in a fight that shattered all boxing revenue and pay-per-view records. After beating Ricky Hatton in December, plans were in motion for Mayweather-De La Hoya II to take place Sept. 20. But cross it off the schedule.

Mayweather, 31, announced his retirement from boxing again on Friday in a move that appears much more serious than his impromptu declaration two years ago...More?

Trump to Bankroll Affliction

Donald Trump plans to bring money and attention to Affliction's MMA events, the real estate mogul said Thursday at a news conference held to announce his partnership with the clothing company turned promoter.

"I've got a lot of money," Trump told a room filled with journalists on the 25th floor of Trump Tower. "That helps, right? But also and perhaps more importantly, I seem to get a lot of attention. For instance, if I wasn't here today, you might have maybe one writer. And now the place is packed."

Trump said he had been discussing a partnership with Affliction for six months.

"It's really something that I'm doing because I enjoy doing it," he said. "If we make money, that's great. I think we will. I think it will be successful. What I do is usually successful."...More?

Ex-wrestler transitions to mixed martial arts

Fighting has been in Rodney Begnaud's blood as far back as he can remember.

He tells the story how his father, John Ernest, and himself as a 4-year-old left the hospital when his brother, former Northside High track and football star John Shane Begnaud, was born to go watch Andre the Giant wrestle at the Domingue Center near N.P. Moss Elementary.

So although Begnaud, known as Redd Dogg Rodney Mack in fighting circles, may not officially have any ultimate fighting experience, he's not at all concerned about looking like a fish out of water when he makes his MMA debut at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lafayette vs. The World ultimate fighting card at Blackham Coliseum...More?
