WWE Wrestles for Share of Japanese Market

WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., racks up annual global pay-per-view sales of $100 million. It won't disclose regional breakdowns, but it sees Japan as one of its most important overseas markets.

The latest push is spearheaded by the WWE's Japan office, which opened this year and is its only overseas office devoted to a single nation. The office hopes to woo Japanese newcomers, including teens and families, not just its usual 20-40 year-old fan base.

It remains to be seen whether WWE can follow the path of such American imports as Hollywood movies, hip-hop music and Disneyland....More?

MVP and Sherri Shepherd at the Prom

Montel Vontavious Porter was in a wrestling ring on Friday body slamming his opponent and getting put in a headlock.

On Saturday night, the World Wrestling Entertainment superstar was dancing at the prom.

Porter, better known as MVP, escorted The View's Sherri Shepherd to the prom at Hoffman Estates High School. Shepherd graduated from Hoffman Estates but never went to her prom.

"Her father was really strict," said MVP about Shepherd missing her prom. "And she didn't fit in growing up. It didn't work out."

MVP bounced around from high school to high school in Miami and didn't get the full prom experience either. The United States Champion said he happened to be in the same area where his prom took place and stopped by wearing shorts and sneakers to see what it was like.

"I showed up, saw the girls that were there and realized I made a big mistake," said MVP, whose real name is Hassan Assad. "I was like, 'I should have been here.' But I had to be a tough guy and not let anyone see that I regretted it."...More?

Shad: WWE's Diesel

"When I was 20-years-old, Tough Enough came on, and they (his friends) were all watching it," he said. "They all thought I was 25. I was 6-7, 310. They were like you should go on the show."

Gaspard qualified for the finals of WWE Tough Enough 2 in 2002 but was disqualified and replaced after failing a physical. "I was really down-hearted on wrestling," Gaspard said. Still, he did not quit.

WWE talent scout Tom Prichard wanted him to continue training. He trained with Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker from the WCW Power Plant and attended Prichard's first Ohio Valley Wrestling training camp in Louisville.

"I loved it [OVW]. I learned a lot from Al Snow, and I learned a lot from Danny Davis of what to do in the ring and outside the ring. It was a really good experience."...More?

Kevin Nash vs Carl Ouelette Results from IWS Montreal

It seems like Kevin Nash is the only man unhappy after the crowded party at the Medley last night for the International Wrestling Syndicate's Tenth Anniversary. Nash was all smiles backstage after tapping out to Pierre-Carl Ouellet's arm-bar, congratulating PCO on the win and the crowd's positive reaction to PCO. The smile never quite reached his eyes however. Once clear of PCO, PCO's ex-tag team partner Brick Crawford and a crowd of PCO's friends from his gym, the mask slipped. Nash's IWS Chauffeur, Joseph Fitzmorris, reported to me that Nash spent most of the drive snarling that no one was supposed to touch his arm (still tender from a recent staph infection.)

The main event of the IWS Tenth Anniversary started with Kevin Nash coming out to his NWO theme and announcing to the crowd, "I'm a professional wrestler, that's what I do for a living. I'm not a shoot-fighter. I get paid to wrestle not to shoot-fight. I was paid in advance, so if anyone in the back decides to turn this into a shoot, I will roll my old, grey-haired ass out of this ring and go back to Florida."...More?
