The WWE is as popular as ever, and its chairman/CEO Vince McMahon is reaping the benefits, as his net worth swells to $1.1 billion, reports Forbes.
Leading up to this past week's WrestleMania 32, shares of the WWE climbed 18%, helping McMahon's net worth climb, thanks to his 52% majority stake in the company.
Back in mid-February, Forbes estimated his net worth to just just under $1 billion.
The WWE Network posted impressive 49% year over year subscriber growth in the fourth quarter... now boasting 1.22 million paid subscribers at $9.99 a month. This gives the network the fifth largest direct-to-consumer subscription service in the U.S., behind only Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and MLB.TV.
The network segment of the WWE generated $159 million in revenue and $48 million in operating income last year, which is nearly double the PPV business before the network launch, according to the company. It's also the most followed sports channel on YouTube and second most on Facebook.

Hulk Hogan vs Gawker II Begins
According to The Wall Street Journal, two motions were filed yesterday by Gawker Media to reduce or reverse the $140 million in damages awarded to WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan. The report included the following statement from Gawker on the appeal process:
“Gawker is now beginning the process of challenging the jury’s verdict in a trial where key evidence was wrongly withheld and the jury was not properly instructed on the Constitutional standards for newsworthiness. So we expect to be fully vindicated. And even if the verdict were to stand, there is no justification for awarding tens of millions of dollars never seen by victims of death and serious injuries.”

Wrestling Fanatics Travel to Texoma to Visit Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame
The president of the new Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Wichita Falls, Johnny Mantell, said the hall of fame had a successful first week.
Mantell said he estimates that more than 1,000 visitors will pass through over the week.
He specifically planned to open their doors this week, because more than 100,000 people are headed to the Dallas area for WWE's WrestleMania. Mantell said he had a booth at WrestleMania and many of the people he spoke with seemed excited to stop through Wichita Falls. The hall of fame is usually not open on Mondays, but they will be this week for all of the WrestleMania traffic coming into downtown.
"Well, I feel like we need to get ready to move up to another floor. That's how hopeful I am. We need more space because I'm getting new stuff in everyday. Guys are bringing us stuff and sending us stuff and we're going to have to move up to another floor for sure here.... before too long," Mantell said.
The hall of fame and new museum has memorabilia dating back to the Civil War.
Admission is $3 and the hall of fame is typically open Tuesday through Sunday.
How A Teenager’s Leaks Site Changed Pro Wrestling
The Monday Night Wars encapsulate a glorious time in sports entertainment history. From late 1995 to early 2001, the two biggest promotions in the country battled every week in a winner-take-all bout for ratings and the future of the industry.
In one corner, the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) was ushering in its Attitude era, introducing icons of hardcore wrestling like Mick Foley to mainstream America, alongside a slew of new superstars like the Rock, Triple H, and Stone Cold Steve Austin, who chugged beers and flicked his middle fingers at management. In the other, World Championship Wrestling was poaching and rebranding WWF’s most established characters: Hulk Hogan, Bret “the Hitman” Hart, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall.
But what made the spectacle grander was the emergence of the Internet, which was spoiling all their secrets. No longer was the drama enclosed in a world that existed exclusively within the window of televised matches. Wrestling rumor and “leak” sites allowed viewers to supplement the official programs with contract details, injury diagnoses, management disputes, and sordid goings-on that wouldn’t be out of place these days on Deadspin, Reddit, or TMZ.
As the details leaked, the product on stage was forced to adapt. The facade of “kayfabe” was broken; the events went meta. Rumors of labor disputes and infamous Montreal screw-job coalesced into WWF owner Vince McMahon becoming an actual on-stage character. Details about a wrestler’s injuries made their high-flying acts even more dramatic. Wrestling moved into post-modernism.
My go-to site for wrestling-related news and rumors at the time was RajahWWF.com—now simply Rajah.com, the switch coming after the World Wildlife Fund snatched back the acronym. It was created in 1997 by then-18-year-old Rajah Kumar, a biology major who doubled as wrestling’s Matt Drudge from his dorm at the University of Alberta in Canada. The Kernel spoke to him about the site’s history, the Internet rumor mill’s impact on wrestling, and the WWF’s attempts to quash the leaks.
How did the site start?
I didn’t have a computer until I went to university, and so, when I got to use it, I didn’t search for school-related material, I searched for wrestling stuff. I’d visit sites, read rumors, and email them to my brother. He got pretty sick of getting these emails every day, so he said, ‘Why don’t you start a website?’ He pointed me to Angelfire.com, and I made a really crappy-looking site.

The duo debuted after The Dudley Boyz defeated The Usos in a Tables Match. They hit the ring and did their usual intros as Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley watched from the ramp. No word yet on when Enzo and Cass will wrestle their first main roster match but it looks like it will be against The Dudley Boyz.

Stephanie McMahon On Not Being Able To See Triple H Much
"Truthfully, we really don't get to see each other very much. Our jobs are so different and we do perform together on television, but that's about the most we see each other, with the exception of being at home which, again, is pretty much just working out - our midnight workouts - so that's our bonding time. But I wouldn't mind being around him 24/7, I have to say. I mean, my husband is pretty amazing."
A Redefining Moment
Stephanie McMahon wrote the following for The Players Tribune:
For three straight days, during February of 2015, #GiveDivasAChance was a trending topic.
Three. Straight. Days.
The message from our fan base around the world during those 72 hours was resounding: They wanted to see our female performers in more prominent storylines, with deeper character development, and they wanted to see them compete in longer matches. This sentiment resonated so strongly throughout WWE that our Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon responded with a tweet of his own, “We hear you, keep watching #GiveDivasAChance.”
“Divas” is how WWE branded our female performers starting in 2008, in an effort to give them a more prominent role. As a point of reference, our male performers are known as Superstars. It was so successful, it led to the creation of a WWE reality show, Total Divas, and launched the careers of those who have become household names, like the Bella Twins, Natalya, Paige, Alicia Fox and Eva Marie.
Now, fast forward to Monday Night RAW on July 13, 2015. That night, when my music, “Welcome to the Queendom,” hit the arena, I strode to the ring with my shoulders back and head held high (versus my character’s normal villainous strut) because I knew I was about to make a historic announcement.
I began by speaking about the revolution around women in sports, referencing Ronda Rousey’s breakthrough success as the first UFC women’s champion, Venus and Serena Williams’ overwhelming popularity transcending tennis and the United States Women’s National Team’s World Cup-clinching victory garnering more viewers than any other soccer game in history. I made it clear that our female performers were going to have that same opportunity in WWE.
This “movement” became known as the Divas Revolution, and the truth is, it began long before I made that announcement. I simply had the privilege of bringing it to life by introducing to WWE’s main roster three of the four women who had been stealing the show as a part of our third brand, NXT, with their unrivaled athleticism, their ability to captivate the audience and their undeniable charisma. As I said their names, the crowd erupted and jumped to their feet. They were Charlotte, the daughter of WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair; the “Irish lass kicker” Becky Lynch; and “The Boss” Sasha Banks.
These were the same three women who competed tonight in front of a record crowd of more than 100,000 at our biggest event of the year, WrestleMania, in a triple threat match for the championship.
Only, they didn’t compete for the Divas Championship. Instead, they competed for the Women’s Championship. This blockbuster announcement was made, as a surprise to our audience, tonight at WrestleMania by WWE Hall of Famer Lita.
Lita made reference to all of the pioneers who have led the way for this transition, including “The Great” Mae Young, Fabulous Moolah, Wendi Richter, Sensational Sherri, Trish Stratus and recent Hall of Fame inductee Jacqueline. She spoke of her pride in the Divas Division, the evolution of the Women’s Division, and then she revealed the physical symbol of this transition: a brand new WWE Women’s Championship belt with the same aesthetics as the male WWE World Heavyweight Championship belt. This title belt represents the pinnacle of achievement in pro wrestling — and shows that in WWE, it isn’t about gender, race or ethnicity. It is simply about being the best at what you do.
The role of women in WWE has continued to evolve. For the first time in WWE history, Sasha Banks and Bayley became the first women to main event an NXT pay-per-view, and they tore the house down. In fact, their match the month before at NXT TakeOver was voted “match of the year” by our fan base. And earlier tonight, at WrestleMania, Charlotte, Sasha and Becky competed in a triple threat match, which ultimately saw Charlotte leave as the champion.
Our female performers are world-class athletes, actors, public speakers and philanthropists. They’re role models, inspiring and empowering women and girls to be confident and strong. They dedicate themselves to WWE, achieve great success and earn the same respect as their male counterparts.
Therefore, from this point forward, all of our performers – male and female – will be known as “Superstars.”

Backstage News on the NXT Deals Signed by Ciampa and Gargano, Speculation on Bobby Roode and Kota Ibushi Deals, Manny Andrade, More
As we noted over the weekend, WWE has officially signed Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano to NXT deals. The two had been appearing on NXT TV for several months prior to being signed.
According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, Ciampa and Gargano are actually signed to WWE NXT touring contracts, which differ from regular WWE developmental deals. The two will not be based in Orlando and will not be required to work out at the WWE Performance Center, but neither of them are allowed to work the indy scene.
With regards to Bobby Roode and Kota Ibushi, Meltzer speculates Bobby Roode will be offered a similar deal to that of Ciampa and Gargano, while Kota Ibushi could end up with a regular deal like the one offered to Shinsuke Nakamura. Ibushi’s deal would likely be for less money, however.
In related news, there appears to be some second-guessing with regards to experienced talents like Rich Swann and Biff Busick, as the two are doing developmental tasks like drills and ring crew work. This may have something to do with the type of deals Gargano and Ciampa signed, although that has yet to be confirmed.
The Swann/Busick argument could be made for an experienced talent like Manny Andrade, fka La Sombra, but he has yet to learn the US style of wrestling at the Performance Center.

AJ Styles Says TNA Made Themselves Look Like “Crap” Following His Departure, Says He Made the Right Decision Choosing WWE Over TNA
WWE star AJ Styles spoke with Brian Fritz of Between the Ropes during WrestleMania media day, and the following are some highlights. You can watch the full interview in the video below:
On whether or not he actually had a contract in place with TNA before he signed with WWE:
“I had signed a letter of intent. I agreed to ‘this is what you said you were going to pay me, so you can send it to legal,’ there was no contract whatsoever involved. What we signed was nothing. It was not a contract in any shape or form.”
On TNA’s public statement released after Styles left:
“I thought they did a great job of making themselves look like crap by putting out that statement. Just let it go. Things didn’t work out. From what I’m hearing, man did I make a great decision coming here. I’m not shameful of what I’ve done in the past with another company, but I’m disappointed.”

WWE Addresses Bobby Roode at NXT Takeover Dallas
Following his appearance at ringside for NXT Takeover Dallas, WWE posted the following about former TNA Champion Bobby Roode:
As if the sight of Kota Ibushi at NXT TakeOver: Dallas wasn’t enough to get the rumor mill rolling, another highly acclaimed grappler was revealed amid a sea of NXT fans. Former World Champion Bobby Roode was shown watching the liveWWE Network event very closely from his seat in the capacity crowd. But why was the veteran competitor at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas?
Just like with Ibushi, WWE.com can only speculate at the moment, but there are immediate thoughts of dream showdowns between Roode and the NXT roster’s elite. Perhaps Roode was just there to watch the hottest show in town. Or maybe he was there to scout potential future opponents. Going by the reaction of the NXT Universe when Roode was shown in attendance, fans were certainly excited by the prospect of the latter possibility.
WWE Questions Kota Ibushi’s Future Following Takeover Dallas
Following Kota Ibushi’s ringside appearance at WWE NXT Takeover Dallas tonight, WWE posted the following about Ibushi and questioned what his future might hold in WWE and/or NXT:
NXT TakeOver: Dallas had no shortage of action inside the ring, but there also was plenty of intrigue beyond the ropes. During the live WWE Network event, Kota Ibushi was seen sitting amongst the capacity crowd of NXT fans. Is the Japanese Superstar the next highly-acclaimed competitor to bring his talents to NXT? Let the speculation begin.
The decorated grappler could have been taking in another action-packed NXT TakeOver, like the thousands of other fans in attendance at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. However, there’s also the possibility that he’s scouting his future competition. If it’s indeed the latter, who in NXT might Ibushi have his sights set on? Does the man they call “Golden Star” have plans to enter his name into the recently announced Global Cruiserweight Series? What dream matchups could be in store for Ibushi?

Stephanie McMahon Talks About Possibly Wrestling At An Upcoming WrestleMania, WWE Going PG, More
Stephanie McMahon recently did a Q&A with Quora to promote WrestleMania 32 and below are some highlights:
What is it like to be portrayed as the “bad guy” on TV? Also considering, that your real life character is quite the opposite.
Growing up as Vince McMahon’s daughter, I’ve always had to fight perception of being a “princess” and not earning my place. On WWE programming, I get to project that villainous persona and play into who the audience wants me to be. And I have to admit, it’s a lot of fun. It’s not difficult to explain to our daughters because we compare WWE’s storylines to the Disney movies they love to watch. In every great story there is a good guy and a bad guy. If the good guy didn’t have anything to overcome then you wouldn’t care about them as much. I tell my children that Mommy’s character is no different than Maleficent or Ursula, and just like the movies, what we do on TV isn’t real life.
Do you miss the “attitude” era? Is the parental guidance era more profitable for the business?
WWE programming has been PG for the past eight years (as rated by our network partner, NBCU). This was a strategic move for WWE to reach more families, grow our business and partner with blue-chip brands and yes, it has been successful. The biggest challenge is to write compelling programming that appeals to all members of the family; it requires a different degree of sophistication. In terms of the McMahon-Helmsley era I would say that the Authority puts it to shame. Our characters are a lot smarter now and they are up to all kinds of antics :))). My favorite memory from that era would be the very beginning, the night I “turned” on my father at Armageddon and joined forces with Triple H.
What is it like to work with your father and husband so closely?
Working in a family business certainly has it’s challenges. The biggest advantage is being able to share the passion we have for WWE professionally and personally.
How do you feel after fans negatively react to a major pay per view event?
If we haven’t delivered a program worthy of our fans passion, then it is a huge disappointment.
If you had the opportunity to venture outside of WWE, what would you have probably done?
News anchor, dance choreographer, marine biologist, or poet.
Who was the recipient of your best power slap so far, stirred by emotion rather than script?
Hands down my best power slap so far was when I cracked The Rock last year at WrestleMania. I had so much adrenaline from the crowd and from the setup of where we were going with Ronda Rousey, that the slap may have had a little more sizzle than was originally intended.
What is your favourite part of your job at WWE?
WWE’s mission is to put smiles on people’s faces the world over whether it is through our programming or by giving back to the community. Whether it’s the reaction of our fans in the crowd, meeting families backstage, or getting hugs from the children at schools or hospitals we visit, interacting with our fans is the best part of my job.
