It was Laine's fifth concussion, the first coming in a snowboarding mishap when he was 12. Laine, his parents and doctors came to the same conclusion: With more and more information coming forward on the long-term effects of multiple concussions, football was no longer worth the risk.
But instead of putting the subject behind him, Laine was determined to learn more. He made sports-related concussions and their potential long-term effects the subject of his senior project.
