Chris Jericho Talks Having Issues With Triple H In The Past

ESPN's The Last Dance has captivated many as the series looks back on Michael Jordan's final year with the Chicago Bulls featuring personal interviews with Jordan, his teammates, coaches and former rivals. Rich Eisen had Chris Jericho on his show and asked Jericho if there was ever a person that he hated as much as Jordan hated the Detroit Pistons.

"I think there's a lot of professional rivalry when you're young full of vim and vigor as they say. It happens in rock and roll bands all the time. Bands will break up, and 10 years later, they'll get back together like why did we waste 10 years of our lives not playing together?"

Jericho recently referred to Triple H as a brother on social media. He believes that Vince McMahon used the animosity that he and Triple H had for each other to get the best out of them inside of the ring.

"I think there's that animosity that drives you to become better, and if you have a case like say Jericho and Triple H, our matches were always great because there was a little bit of real-life animosity between us," Jericho admitted. "'I'm gonna show him. Well, I'm gonna show him. Well, I'm gonna show him,' and I think that's good in a certain way. And I can almost suggest back in those certain days, Vince McMahon would subtly encourage that because you knew you were going to get better results inside of the ring."

AEW Fined $10,000 By The Maryland State Athletic Commission For Jon Moxley Vs. Kenny Omega Match

AEW has been fined $10,000 by the Maryland State Athletic Commission over the "Unsanctioned Lights Out match" between current AEW World Champion Jon Moxley and current AEW World Tag Team Champion Kenny Omega.

The order, seen below, notes that AEW was the promoter for a pro wrestling match between Omega and Moxley at the AEW Full Gear pay-per-view from the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Maryland on November 9, 2019, a match that saw the licensed talents suffer lacerations that caused blood to be introduced into the ring. The commission determined that administrative charges against AEW were appropriate for alleged violations of Maryland law pertaining to pro wrestling contests and related regulations.

The filing mentions how Moxley and Omega used "foreign objects including a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire, a broom with bristles wrapped in barbed wire, and a tool similar to an ice pick." It also states Moxley "used the baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire to strike" Omega three times across his back and cause lacerations from which Omega bled. It also details how Omega used the broom to cause Moxley to bleed from his head, shoulder and back.

The Commission alleges that AEW violated multiple regulations, including the Conduct of Wrestling Contest and Responsibility of Promoter. AEW agreed to pay a civil penalty to the Commission in the amount of $10,000 within 30 days of the order.

It was also noted that while the Commission acknowledges that AEW took precautions to reduce the potential for injury to both competitors by using materials to simulate injury and merely give the appearance of bleeding, blood was still introduced into the ring in other instances during the match, through deliberate and repeated actions of the two wrestlers, as scripted by AEW.

Triple H And Shawn Michaels Discuss Social Media’s Impact On WWE

Triple H and Shawn Michaels recently appeared on Inside The Ropes. The duo discussed social media’s impact on WWE’s creative process and how fans behave differently now. Triple H said that fans are much more expressive, which makes it more difficult to create heels and faces.

“Everybody has an opinion,” said Triple H. “Everybody has an opinion, but you can’t dictate now, so, like, you’re gonna create a character that everybody’s supposed to dislike, but there’s a large portion of them that are gonna like that. And then when you make somebody that they’re supposed to like, there’s a large portion of them that are gonna dislike that. And if you tried hard to flip them, and I know everybody’s gonna make the Roman thing of this, but there’s something to all that. But that’s a more difficult thing probably now than it’s ever been in this business to come up with a universal one or the other.”

Triple H and Michaels said that this effect holds true for fans in sports and other forms of entertainment. Triple H specifically brought up the music industry. “Same with music, too,” said Triple H. “Artists put out an album now, and you go through the social media when the album comes out, and it’s like, ‘Greatest thing ever,' ‘absolute crap, complete garbage,’ ‘greatest music of all time,’ like, it just…”

Michaels said that, when you’re the one who’s making the content, you don’t necessarily care if the fans love or hate it. “It’s okay if you get on social media, and you say that it’s absolute garbage because that means at least you purchased the album to listen to it, to find out, to make your decision it’s absolute garbage,” said Michaels. “After you purchase the album we’re good. You know what I mean? Whatever decision you want to come up with after that, knock your socks off.”

Triple H said that he loves the fans’ passion, whether the crowd is cheering or booing. “I think sometimes fans think it’s something that we hate or something,” said Triple H. “It’s funny, sometimes I see the internet talk about us manipulating crowd noises. We don’t manipulate the crowd noises. You know, on live stuff, where they think like, ‘Oh and then they turned down the volume because this guy was getting booed and they didn’t want him getting booed.’ No, we didn’t. It’s just what’s happening right, it just is. But they’re so passionate about it, but the fact that, we love the fact that they can express their opinion. We love the fact that they can go out there and say, ‘This is great,’ ‘This isn’t great,’ ‘This guy’s a good guy,’ ‘That person’s a bad guy,’ whatever that is, right, and yet, if they also, if they tell us they dislike something, if we’re smart, we listen to that. Might take a while but we can fix it.”

Finally, Michaels said it’s better to see fans showing some engagement rather than watching them give up entirely. “I’d be more worried if you weren’t engaged, if you didn’t have an opinion,” said Michaels. “Whether you do get tired of it or not, what’s gonna really suck is the day when nobody cares, when nobody wants a picture, when nobody wants an autograph. So, no matter how much, better to have that ‘hassle’ than no hassle at all, and I think that’s how all of us in this line of work look at it. Any kind of engagement, good, bad or otherwise, is better than no engagement at all.”

Triple H And Vince McMahon Explain WWE’s Safety Protocol During COVID-19 Pandemic

As one of the few public-facing companies in America still running full steam ahead amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic, WWE has had to keep its employees safe as they perform in a very physical manner. When asked about keeping talent safe during the recent quarterly earnings call, Vince talked about what precautions have been put in place.

As far as testing is concerned, we do everything imaginable. You can’t even step on the premises if you have a fever. We have this whole form you have to fill out, and you have to do it every week, in terms of whether you’ve been exposed. It’s a whole long form. We’re doing everything we can for safety and making sure the environment is as good as it possibly can be. Not only monitoring our talent but our employees as well. Anyone who’s been at the training facility, and we’re very careful as to how many people are in and out at one time.

It’s a company called Applied Bioscience that we work through. They have a spray that, through a process, makes it cling to surfaces. Once it’s coated, it lasts for 90 to 120 days. How it was explained to me it, it acts like a sword that punctures the cell wall of what causes the virus and kills it on contact.

Vince finishes by saying that they’ll take advantage of any testing that comes out as time goes on. Closing fully is not an option for WWE, but Vince and the company want to be sure that everything is as safe as possible for those who choose to come in and perform in their ring.

Triple H addresses controversial Ronda Rousey comments, success of WWE WrestleMania 36 event

Earlier this month, Ronda Rousey caused an internet stir when she labeled wrestling fans as "ungrateful" while explaining how they did not appreciate her. At the same time, Rousey said she would not return to WWE on a full-time basis in the future. The comments seemed out of left field, with Rousey having been off television for more than a year and her time in WWE being considered a great success by nearly all measures.

Then, the responses started, with seemingly everyone in the WWE women's locker room giving their two cents. As the tweets and quotes piled up, WWE began referencing Rousey's comments on weekly television programming as fans began to question whether Rousey's comments were legitimate or an elaborate beginning to a bigger Rousey storyline set to take place.

Speaking with CBS Sports HQ on Wednesday, WWE legend and executive vice president of global talent strategy and development, Paul "Triple H" Levesque, addressed Rousey's comments. He didn't provide much clarity on the matter, but said the world would have to "wait and see" if those comments were simply Rousey operating in promotional mode.

The Rock Sends Special Message To Triple H For WWE's The Bump

The Rock sent a special message to Triple H for today's episode of The Bump on WWE's Digital platforms. As noted, Triple H appeared on the show to promote his 25th Anniversary Celebration, which kicks off this Friday during SmackDown on FOX.

The Rock started out his message with a joke about doing his signature "Finally..." promo in his quiet neighborhood. The Great One then praised The Game for his career, in and out of the ring.

"There's some big stuff going down and the big stuff going down is Triple H - 25 years of a storied, epic, historic career already, so I am honored to send you this message, my friend, to help celebrate and help honor you at 25 years, of not only being a part of the WWE, but 25 years of being the WWE," Rock said. "And man, I gotta tell you, I have, like you, we are lucky boys to have the career that we have had in the world that we love so much, of pro wrestling. I gotta tell you, man, from the time I first got into the company, you, from my very first match in Survivor Series at The Garden, you were so good to me, so welcoming to me then, but also I knew... I knew of everybody in the locker room, that there was a hunger in your eyes, and I knew that we were going to be competitors, and we were going to compete, and work our asses off, and that's exactly what we did, and that's exactly why we jelled together, why we had incredible chemistry.

"You know, I always talk about the matches that I've had with Stone Cold, that you've had with Stone Cold, and that you've had with Mick Foley, and I've had with Mick Foley, The Undertaker... you name it, but there's only one man who I've gone around this world with and wrestled consistently with so many times, and put on just incredible matches, and that's you. And I thank you, I love you, congratulations, man, on just an amazing career, but also to, not only an amazing 25 years, but also not only in the ring, but what you've done outside of the ring, too, has been unparalleled. You can't compare it because nobody else has done it, and what you're doing with NXT, what you're doing with the company itself, and what you're doing to make sure the fans go home happy, because it's in your blood, it's in your DNA, it's as if you were born into the business, and in some other lifetime you were. This is why we're kindred spirits. Congratulations on such an amazing 25 years. I look forward to the next 25 years. Thank you for being a friend, thank you for being a brother. Again, I love you, man. Happy 25th. Amazing, amazing. Love you brother."

Rock finished his message with another joke about doing one of his signature catchphrases in his quiet neighborhood.

Triple H responded and joked, "That is awesome. I'm honored, I really am. The worst part is, how come he looks so great and I look like an old prune? I'm all wrinkled and grey, and stuff, and he looks exactly the same as he did when I wrestled him in The Garden when he walked in the door."

Vince McMahon Sued By Former XFL Commissioner & CEO Oliver Luck

Former XFL Commissioner and CEO Oliver Luck is suing Vince McMahon for wrongful termination.

Luck has filed suit against the XFL boss and WWE Chairman, claiming he was wrongfully terminated after the league folded due to the coronavirus earlier this month, according to TMZ.

Luck says he received a termination letter detailing why he was being let go on Thursday, April 9, but he denies any wrongdoing and says the allegations against him are not true.

In the suit, Luck says he fulfilled his end of the deal and ran the league from its resurrection in January 2018, only to be wrongfully terminated. Regarding the specific allegations against him, Luck redacted those details in the lawsuit. This is likely due to a confidentiality agreement he had with the league from when he first signed.

Luck is suing McMahon to hold him responsible for paying out a guaranteed portion of his contract. There's no word yet on how much money that is.

The XFL recently folded for a second time and filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy due to losses from the COVID-19 outbreak.

During a recent interview with Inside the Ropes, Triple H commented on WWE’s plans for another Mae Young Classic:

“We’re gonna do it again here soon, and we’re kind of getting to that point again now, like, wow, there is just a lot out there. So they are here and there and they’re all over the place. I think the talent sort of gravitate toward finding each other and they end up in these little pockets and then they’re all learning from each other but helping to bring that out and show it to the rest of the world is the goal."

WWE Hall of Famer Howard Finkel passes away

WWE is saddened to learn that Howard Finkel has passed away at age 69.

When considering the greatest ring announcers in the history of sports and sports-entertainment, you’d be hard-pressed to name one better than Howard Finkel. A native of Newark, NJ, “The Fink” — a label that had been attached affectionately to Howard over the years — made his ring announcing debut at Madison Square Garden in 1977 for WWE’s predecessor, WWWF.

By 1979, Finkel was the full-time ring announcer for WWWF, and when WWE was established in 1980, The Fink became the first — and eventually longest-serving — employee. Finkel’s distinctive voice was instantly recognizable, and for more than two decades Superstars such as The Ultimate Warrior, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and more would have a title victory marked by The Fink’s signature call, “and NNNEEEWWW World Champion!”

Despite being a ring announcer, Finkel didn’t shy away from in-ring competition in certain circumstances. In 1995, he battled his longtime rival Harvey Wippleman in a Tuxedo Match on Raw, and later helped X-Pac shave Jeff Jarrett’s head in a Hair vs. Hair Match at SummerSlam 1998.

In addition to his legendary tenure as a ring announcer, The Fink was an indispensable resource inside the WWE offices for his vast knowledge of sports-entertainment history. Well respected by current Superstars, WWE Legends and Hall of Famers, Finkel’s encyclopedic memory and kindness made him beloved among his colleagues. The Fink was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on April 4, 2009.

WWE owned a piece of the XFL, after all

The resurrection of the XFL was sold as an endeavor bought exclusively by Vince McMahon, with no involvement from his publicly-traded wrestling corporation, WWE. The wreckage of XFL 2.0 says otherwise.

Via multiple reports, WWE owned 23.5 percent of the Class B stock in the XFL, while McMahon owned the other 76.5 percent. McMahon also owned 100 percent of the Class A stock in the XFL. (Typically, Class A stock has greater voting rights than Class B stock.)

WWE Announces Coronavirus-Related Business Changes After Vince McMahon's Meeting With Employees

WWE today provided an update on measures taken by the Company in response to the current impact of COVID-19 on the organization.

Due to COVID-19 and current government mandated impacts on WWE and the media business generally, the Company went through an extensive evaluation of its operations over the past several weeks. This analysis resulted in the implementation of various short-term cost reductions and cash flow improvement actions including:

* Reducing executive and board member compensation;
* Decreasing operating expenses;
* Cutting talent expenses, third party staffing and consulting;
* Deferring spend on the build out of the Company's new headquarters for at least six months.

Given the uncertainty of the situation, the Company also identified headcount reductions and made the decision to furlough a portion of its workforce effective immediately. The decision to furlough versus permanently reduce headcount reflects the fact that the Company currently believes the furlough will be temporary in nature.

The Company's reductions of employee compensation and headcount result in an estimated monthly savings of $4 million along with cash flow improvement of $140 million primarily from the deferral in spending on the Company's new headquarters. Additionally, the Company has substantial financial resources, both available cash and debt capacity, which currently total approximately $0.5 billion, to manage the challenges ahead. Management continues to believe the fundamentals of the Company's business remain strong and that WWE is well positioned to take full advantage of the changing media landscape and increasing value of live sports rights over the longer term.

The Company will provide further details when it reports its first quarter 2020 results next Thursday, April 23 after the close of the market.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department reportedly visited the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, FL several times over the last few weeks, in March and April, to tell the company that it was not in compliance with the "stay-at-home" Executive Order issued by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and that they had to shut the tapings down, according to Orlando reporters Jon Alba and Stephanie Coueignoux.

Alba reports that Orange County deputies were called again on Monday regarding the live RAW that aired on the USA Network. However, the new Executive Order from DeSantis, signed on April 9, already allowed for WWE to continue operations as an essential business. There's no word on who was calling the sheriff's department or how many calls they received since March. Coueignoux said deputies told her that on Monday "someone called to say there would be taping at the location that evening" and they responded to the Performance Center again before RAW, but the April 9 order allowed WWE to continue.

WWE Considered An Essential Business By Florida Governor's Office

Orange County, Florida Mayor Jerry Demings was asked about WWE being allowed to continue operations during a press conference today. He said that originally WWE was deemed non-essential, but that changed after some talk with the office of Governor Ron DeSantis.

"I think initially there was a review that was done and they were not initially deemed an essential business. With some conversation with the Governor's office regarding he Governor's [stay-at-home] order, they were deemed an essential business. Therefore they were allowed to remain open."

XFL Files For Bankruptcy

The XFL has filed for bankruptcy.

Vince McMahon's second shot at a professional football league was forced to cease all ongoing operations due to the ongoing global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The league canceled the remainder of the season after the fifth week of play and, while the original plan was for the league to return for the 2021 season, those close to the league said it would not come back for a second season.

The death of the fledgling league seems to be official as a spokesperson for the XFL spoke with a reporter with TMZ Sports and said the league had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

"The XFL quickly captured the hearts and imaginations of millions of people who love football," the spokesperson said. "Unfortunately, as a new enterprise, we were not insulated from the harsh economic impacts and uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Accordingly, we have filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

"This is a heartbreaking time for many, including our passionate fans, players and staff, and we are thankful to them, our television partners, and the many Americans who rallied to the XFL for the love of football."

TMZ Sports reported the league lost out on "tens of millions in revenue" due to the rest of the regular season and planned playoff games being canceled and that the filling occurred when it did to maximize the return to investors. Among the creditors listed in the filing include XFL head coaches Bob Stoops ($1,083,333.33), Mark Trestman ($777,777.78), Jonathan Hayes ($633,333.33) and Winston Moss ($583,333.33).
