Former WWE Diva Maria Speaks Out on Her Release

In an interview with the Special Delivery Show on XM satellite radio last night, Maria Kanellis said that she feels that she was released because she wanted to do things outside of WWE (her music, Celebrity Apprentice) and WWE wanted control of her career. She said that WWE was "not intentionally but intentionally" holding her back from some of the things that she wanted to do. She said that she wouldn't sign on to some of the things that WWE wanted her to sign on. She said that she was negotiating about it with WWE and did not ask for her release. But she said she had her future in front of her and it will be interesting to see what happens "when the bad relationship is over and you move on". She was also asked why she was released when her appearance on The Celebrity Apprentice was upcoming and like many of us, she couldn't figure out a logical reason why it happened. She also mentioned that she was released the day after her birthday. Click here for the full interview.

Who and Who Should Play Lobo in the Live Action Picture?

Ever since the mention of a Lobo live action film, there has been lot's of speculation regarding who should play the Last Czarnian. Well, this writer has his favorite. After much deliberation, it boils down to this; only a professional wrestler can play the Scourge of the Galaxy. There are many, many actors who could portray the Main Man, in attitude and facial features (think Ron Perlman), but couldn't possibly be in the physical condition (ergo; be ripped) it takes to play the Space-Dolphin Savior. SO, with that being said, who in the professional wrestling world could play the Lobotomizer? Like I stated earlier, I have my favorite, But lets list some of the possibilites.

#1)The Undertaker
#2)Kevin Nash
#3)Dave Batista
#4)Mike Knox or Kane or Abyss

#5 and my personal favorite to play Lobo in the live-action film..............)
Triple H: Paul Levesque has the physique, the size (6'-4"), and most importantly the face!!! Any self-respecting Lobo fan can admit that Bisley's Lobo is probably the best drawn. (although a case can be made for Martin Emonds in my opinion). The first few pages of Lobo's Back will give anybody wishing to see what I mean a perfect example of why Trips would be great for this role. You can also look at his acting, you cannot be successful in Pro Wrestling if you can't act (or "talk" as it may be). The character of Triple H has the persona, and the comedy it would take to pull this off. And the intensity in which Triple H is portrayed would do nothing but help this particular role of "The Baddest Man in the Galaxy"...More?

Awesome Kong Files Lawsuit Against Bubba The Love Sponge; BTLS Responds

Pro wrestler Awesome Kong claims a radio host called her in the middle of the night from a blocked number and threatened to "'sucker punch' her until she stopped breathing," adding, "You'll be dead like all those other niggers in Haiti you fat black bitch!" Kong, whose real name is Kia Stevens, says AT&T refuses to identity the caller, who she believes is Todd Clem, aka Bubba the Love Sponge.

Stevens, who works for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, says she got into a backstage spat with Clem, a Total Nonstop contracted interviewer and radio host known as Bubba the Love Sponge, after Clem disparaged efforts to raise money for victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Stevens claims Clem called her at her Tampa home from a blocked number at 5 a.m. on Feb. 10. She says the caller said, "'This is Bubba the Love Sponge here at (and at this point the caller named a radio station' and then alluded to the fact that the call was being broadcast on the radio. "The caller then started talking in a stream, threatening to come to the petitioner's house and 'sucker punch' her until she stopped breathing and then said, 'You'll be dead like all those other niggers in Haiti you fat black bitch ... Fuck Haiti!"...More?

BTLS Response:
"This morning I was made aware of allegations made in a petition for full bill of discovery by Ms. Kia Stevens, a professional wrestler with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. The allegations in this petition are one hundred percent false. To be clear; everything contained in this petition is not true. Ms. Stevens attributing outrageous racist statements and physical threats to me is disgusting."

"We can prove without any doubt the allegations made in this petition are false. First Ms. Stevens claims that she was called on the air, at 5:08 AM on February 10th, we are not even on the air until 6 AM Eastern time. We have phone records and eye witnesses that account for my every movement that day from 4:50 AM forward. No call was made to Ms. Stevens at all."

"We will be pursuing all legal remedies available to us in the State of Florida to fight these deliberately malicious allegations."

Whodathunkit? Professional Wrestling a Recession-Proof Media Investment

In an otherwise sandpaper dry Hollywood Reporter story about how media conglomerates are staring to pay their shareholders dividends again, writer Georg Szalai tacks on one of the most fascinating throw-away kickers we've read in quite some time.

"Sports entertainment powerhouse World Wrestling Entertainment is an industry dividend-yield champ: Its 36 cents per share quarterly dividend amounts to a yield of 8.8%."

Yes, you read that right. If only you'd have invested your life's savings in the WWE a couple of years ago -- instead of that eight-bedroom, public transportation-adjacent monstrosity in Van Nuys -- you'd be a rich bastard right now, with your choice of bargain-basement, foreclosed Van Nuys monstrosities.

WWE NXT Results: An Early Clash

Daniel Bryan was certainly put to the test during his first night in front of the WWE Universe. The NXT Rookie faced the new World Heavyweight Champion, Chris Jericho on the inaugural episode of Syfy’s new Tuesday night show. With his NXT Rookie, British bare-knuckle fighter Wade Barrett, in his corner, Jericho was victorious when Bryan tapped out to the Walls of Jericho. But Bryan wowed the WWE Universe with an impressive offensive arsenal of skills and submission moves, almost making Jericho tap out to a Heel Hook. Bryan even fearlessly dove head-first through the ring ropes at his opponent, crashing into the announce table. But it’s unlikely Bryan has learned his incredible skills from his Pro, The Miz. In addition to their explosive clash earlier in the night, The Miz attacked Bryan after his main event loss, calling him an embarrassment. Full results.

Daniel Bryan Talks About His Name Change in WWE & More

WWE NXT rookie Daniel Bryan (formerly Bryan Danielson) appeared on "The B.J. Shea Morning Experience" radio show on 99.9 KISW in Seattle this morning to discuss tonight's WWE NXT debut. You can listen to the interview it's entirety at KISW.com. Here's what Bryan said about:

His Name Change: Well we have to accept the things that are handed down to us, but it is pretty close to my name, you know what I mean? I am comfortable with it and I think it is going to be good. Most people who watch WWE Universe have no idea who I am so they don’t know about what my name was before or anything like that.

To them I’m always going to be known as Daniel Bryan. I think that will be okay. It’s just that the WWE is an enormous corporation and it’s smart for them to have the rights of anybody they put on TV. It doesn’t matter if the person is successful; I’m successful and they own the rights and that helps them and their merchandising and that sort of thing. I don’t think it’s really a big deal; it’s a pretty standard thing."

The Miz Calling Him Boring: "So the deal with The Miz is that that’s how he’s gotten by. He’s very charismatic, he’s gone out there, he’s really good at making people hate him. How I’ve gotten by is a little bit different. I’ve been doing this for over ten years now and what I’ve gotten by and how I made my name is by being excellent in the ring, but that doesn’t mean what he’s saying isn’t partially correct, you know what I mean?

"There is this huge aspect there where for me it’s always been what goes on in the ring. And with the WWE...that’s a big part of it, it’s presenting yourself as a superstar. And when he said I look like an accountant, I kinda do! I don’t watch television, I don’t e-mail. He was asking me, 'What do you do with yourself?' and I said, 'Well, I read!' (Miz responded) 'What? Who reads?' It’s just one of those things where there’s going to be a learning curb there because it’s completely different then anything I’ve every done."

Interview with Shawn Michaels

In the new 2010 WrestleMania XXVI Almanac magazine, WWE superstar Shawn Michaels says he has regrets about his WrestleMania 14 match with Stone Cold Steve Austin. At the time, Michaels’ back was in terrible shape and his career was thought to be over. He was also an emotional wreck and admits he was not an easy guy to get along with in the WWE locker room. When asked if he has any regrets in his career, Michael said:

“The one I always come back to is my match against Steve Austin at WrestleMania 14. I just wasn’t in a great place physically or emotionally. That one could have been so much more. Steve didn’t get me at my best. And that’s unfortunate, because it was the last time I got to work with him. Steve went on to such great things afterward, and I had an opportunity to make that match so much more.”

Michaels also looks back at his matches with Bret Hart during the mid-90’s and thinks the two legends could have accomplished a lot more together if not for their personal differences:

“I will say that I wish I had been in a better place in my life with Bret. Our matches were phenomenal, but I shudder to think what he and I could have accomplished had we gotten along.”

Michaels also named his classic ladder match with Razor Ramon from WrestleMania as high on his list of all-time great WrestleMania matches:

“Over the years, the ladder itself has become the central figure of that particular stipulation, but in our situation, it served as a backdrop for something much bigger. We were two guys claiming rightful ownership of those titles, and the ladder was just there as a way for us to prove who was the best. Now, the ladder is the primary element, and these matches are often about what the contestants can do with it.”

TNA Scraps Suicide

TNA Wrestling has scrapped the "Suicide" character and Frankie Kazarian is back to working as himself. It's unknown what gimmick they are going with Kaz as the graphics on the screen at this week's Impact tapings said "Kaz" while ring announcer David Penzer introduced him as "Kazarian". It's unknown if there are any future plans to use the Suicide character as one source told me the gimmick has been "jobbed out and forgotten".

The Suicide character was created by Midway Games as an original character for the TNA Impact video game. Midway had full license with how to use him as the character was not originally trademarked by TNA or a wrestler. Brandon Silvestry (a/k/a Senshi, Low-Ki & Kaval) did motion capture for the character on the game and voiced it.

TNA Wrestling brought the character to TV in December 2008. Frankie Kazarian originally played the character but it was later portrayed by Christopher Daniels when Kaz was injured. Kaz returned with the gimmick when he returned from injury.

TNA iMPACT!, which had aired on Spike on Thursday nights for the past four years, regularly drew about 1.5 to 1.8 million viewers in that time slot. On Monday, January 4, Impact ran a special Monday night live show against World Wrestling Entertainment's RAW and drew 2.2 million viewers.

That development has led Spike to greenlight the permanent move from Thursday to Monday night, initiating another chapter in a previous 'Monday Night Wars' that ran from 1995 to 2001 between Eric Bischoff and Vince McMahon.

iMPACT! will begin on Mondays March 8, 2010, with a live edition, then producing live programming every other week after that.

This is a suicide move for TNA. While the January 4 edition drew very well, especially going against RAW's presentation of Bret Hart, TNA should not expect the return viewership. The January 4 edition of Impact had the curiosity factor of Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff returning to wrestling, coupled with the rumored debut of Jeff Hardy and Ric Flair. The anticipated NWO reunion added to those numbers as well.

TNA's booking since January 4 has been sporadic at best, producing some good material, some bad and a lot of material that has been puzzling at best. What it hasn't produced is anything groundbreaking that will compel non-fans or WWE diehards to make the switch.

Could this obsession of Bischoff and Hogan be TNA's Waterloo?

TNA iMPACT! Moving to Monday Nights; Live Every Other Week

Spike TV and TNA Wrestling are hoping to reignite the Monday night wrestling wars.

TNA is set to announce on Monday that its flagship weekly series, "TNA Impact," will move to Monday nights on Spike starting March 8 at 9 p.m.. That puts it up against World Wrestling Entertainment's "WWE Raw," which has dominated the Monday night cable ratings for years. As part of the move, "TNA Impact" will also start airing live telecasts every other week.

TNA President Dixie Carter tells the Hollywood Reporter that moving iMPACT! to Monday nights is a good move for her company and the industry as a whole. "We feel strongly that Monday nights is where the majority of wrestling viewers have been historically," said TNA president Dixie Carter. "Having two Monday night wrestling shows with healthy competition between them can make for great TV. Our goal is not to beat 'Raw' immediately, but we feel confident this will accelerate our growth and make it fun for wrestling fans," Carter said.

WWE execs said they didn't see the TNA move to Monday as competition. "We're not too concerned," WWE spokesman Robert Zimmerman said. "We're in good shape. It's somewhat of a different audience. On Monday nights we're one of the top cable shows. We're focusing on our new show for Syfy, "NXT," and 'Wrestlemania XXIV.'"

According to Zimmerman, WWE's "Raw" household ratings were up 12% in the third and fourth quarter of 2009 after implementing a regular series of guest hosts -- such as Snoop Dogg, the Osbournes and Shaquille O'Neal...More?

WWE to Overhaul Major PPV

Vince McMahon has announced in a conference call with WWE shareholders that the Survivor Series pay-per-view will be coming to an end:

“We think Survivor Series is obsolete. It worked many, many years ago,” McMahon told investors, “but it’s outlasted its usage.” He went on to say that despite being one of the company’s four original PPVs (the others being the Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania and Summer Slam), “It’s one of the PPVs we will be looking at in terms of re-branding. We will no longer have that title anymore.”

The announcement follows a report noting that while buy-rates WWE’s newer ‘themed’ pay-per-views is on the rise, Survivor Series suffered an almost 30% fall from the previous year.

“It’s all a circus and it’s all entertainment. If you’re prepared to take it in the spirit in which it’s given, then you can really enjoy it and have a great time. If you’re going to sit back and just be in judgment of all this, then you’re not going to have a good time. The fact is, particularly young people enjoy it, love it [and] they don’t grow up to be dysfunctional because they see it. A whole nation has watched wrestling for the last 50 years on television. It really was one of the first sporting events on television because it was very easy to televise. Millions and millions of Americans have grown up enjoying the entertainment, and I don’t think it should be taken any more seriously than that. One thing that is very clear when you watch professional wrestlers is what phenomenal athletes they are. There’s so much emphasis given to the drama and all of that, but if you really look at it, they are in phenomenal shape."

Vince McMahon: Heavyweight Champion of Branding

The guy has an incredible knack for building brands. By cultivating different images and personas for each of WWE’s weekly TV shows, monthly pay-per view events and stable of wrestlers, McMahon constantly reinvents his company in order to stay relevant. The cartoonish heroes vs. villians story lines of 1980s gave way to an edgier product in the '90s. Now WWE has moved back towards more family friendly shows, often "guest hosted" by celebrities like William Shatner and LeBron James.

Last year's WrestleMania generated $64 million in revenue from pay TV, gate receipts, sponsorships and merchandise sales, including 350,000 DVD sales. That's more gross revenue than the Indianapolis 500 and the per-day average of the NBA Finals and Bowl Championship Series. The company's core strength: McMahon's willingness to take risks (and not just in the ring where he’s grappled with the likes of Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin). Granted, not all of them work out; remember the XFL or World Bodybuilding Federation? But with wrestling, he’s had the Midas touch. Update on WWE NXT

Florida Championship Wrestling sent out a press release concerning their involvement with WWE's new show WWE NXT:

"With speculation rife regarding the imminent debut of WWE’s new television show ‘WWE-NXT,’ all FCW Superstars are sure to be at their best as they attempt to impress top brass in WWE and secure spots on the new show’s roster. And with Edge watching over the evening’s proceedings, (Edge will be appearing at Friday night's FCW show in Melbourne, Florida) the stakes have never been higher."

PWInsider.com is reporting that the new WWE NXT show will be reality based, as the SyFy network has been wanting WWE to do something along these lines for awhile now.

The show will reportedly be a mix of on-air feuds and reality based TV where the viewers can actually follow the wrestlers outside of the ring as well. The viewers will be following the wrestlers from day one, and they will get to know who they actually are, as they fight to become the next big WWE star and hopefully get moved to either the Raw or Smackdown brand.

It should be noted that WWE has been pitching ideas for the new show since the fall of '09, and although there can certainly be aspects of the show different from what we're reporting now, the base idea for the show seems to be that it will be reality based and focus entirely on new talent.

Take That Chyna

After Beth Phoenix became the second woman to enter the Royal Rumble, she made he following comments:

“Despite Chyna’s accomplishments in the Rumble, I eliminated The Great Khali. Seven-foot-three, 420 pounds. No small feat. I am WWE’s Glamazon. Chyna was WWE’s Ninth Wonder of the World … mostly called so because people wondered whether she was a man or a woman. I often wonder this, myself.”

Beth then posted on her Twitter account the she was "told I hurt Chyna's feelings with my comments. Oops!"

This situation made me think, here we go again. Chyna has found a reason to try and be relevant again. When I checked a popular Chyna fansite, A Living Wonder, I found the following posted by the ALW webmaster:

Despite published internet reports, Chyna's manager told me Chyna has made absolutely NO statements about Beth Phoenix and that she will not engage in insults with Beth or anyone in the WWE for that matter.

Really? Since when has she stopped talking trash about the WWE? Chyna has posted several disparaging remarks including referring to Triple H as a dickhead and claiming that Linda McMahon is "killing in the name of payroll" on her official website. When is she going to get over the break-up with Triple H? She isn't the only person in the world to get dumped. What is the problem? Let it go! It's been roughly nine years, a marriage, and two kids later!

What's the problem Chyna? Can't take a few hits? Stop being so negative and move on. Take that.

Couture Chokes Out Coleman at UFC 109

In a battle between beloved hall of famers, Randy Couture reigned supreme, as he submitted Mark Coleman with a second-round rear-naked choke in the UFC 109 “Relentless” headliner on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Drifting briefly into a state of unconsciousness, Coleman went out on his sword 69 seconds into round two.

The incomparable Couture set the tone with his boxing but deftly moved to the clinch midway through the opening round, pressed Coleman against the cage and went to work with his patented dirty boxing. A dejected Coleman, 45, retreated to his corner after a lopsided period. He had no answers and seemed to know it. Reality bit.

Couture rocked Coleman with a left hook in tight in the second round, pushed again into the clinch and took down the former Olympian with surprising ease. From there, the two-division champion flurried on “The Godfather of Ground-and-Pound,” seized back control and cinched the choke for the victory, his second in a row since his return to the light heavyweight division.

“I’m having a blast,” said the 46-year-old Couture. “I feel like I’m improving each and every time I get out here. This is my third fight in seven months, and it feels good to be so active.”

Coleman is 1-2 in the UFC since returning after a decade-long departure.

“Wow, the guy’s tough,” he said of Couture. “The guy’s real tough. I don’t know what the hell happened. I’m disappointed. I think I can do better. I won’t quit. I’ll be back.”

Refusal to Follow Rules Keeps Nick Diaz Out of UFC

Maybe Nick Diaz should take a hint from Triple H or Queen: Just play the game.

After winning Strikeforce's welterweight belt last weekend, Diaz singled out top-ranked 17o-pounder Georges St. Pierre as a desirable opponent. Unfortunately for Diaz, St. Pierre works exclusively for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Linda McMahon Fights Back: Eugene Was "Inspirational"

A day after Rob Simmons attacked Linda McMahon and World Wrestling Entertainment, the company she helped build and once led, for insensitivity toward people with mental disabilities, the McMahon campaign fought back.

The issue bubbled to the surface of an already acrimonious campaign between Simmons and McMahon, both Republicans running for U.S. Senate, after White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel used a derogatory word for people with learning disabilities.

That prompted the Simmons camp to circulate a couple of YouTube videos showing a WWE storyline that featured Eugene, a character with a mental impairment, being humiliated in the ring.

"Rob Simmons indicates once again that he doesn't understand how to separate fact from fiction,'' Ed Patru, a spokesman for the McMahon campaign, said in a statement. "In the soap opera world of WWE, the character 'Eugene' was developmentally disabled, but rather than the beaten down, pathetic character that Rob presents, Eugene was treated via scripting like all WWE superstars with no special privileges. He competed in the ring or in a steel cage, sometimes winning, but often losing as an underdog. In the end, in spite of any disability, he was victorious and became a hero...More?

Hulk Hogan Doesn't Like "Girls"

Hulk Hogan compared the corporate environment of the WWE to the "let's just hang out" environment of TNA with the following:

And then made the following sexist comment:

"We don't have a girl writing the show telling us what to say."

Since a "girl" is the president of TNA, I'm surprised by his comment about Stephanie. It's o.k. that he is trying to build interest in TNA and take shots at the WWE, but I don't know how he can separate a "girl" running the WWE and a "girl" running TNA.

It reminds me of Brock Lesnar's comments at the conclusion of his last UFC fight. While I thought his promo was great, he insulted the sponsors and Dana White made him apologise at the press conference. It's never good to bite the hand that feeds you.

Rumor Mill - Awesome Kong's Issues with TNA

As mentioned a few weeks back, Awesome Kong asked for her release from TNA after the backstage altercation with Bubba the Love Sponge. Word going around is that the company denied her request to be released. Kong was talked into working the TV taping the night after her fight with Bubba but told TNA officials she would not be going on the UK tour after they wouldn't grant her release. The issue between her and Bubba is apparently resolved after a meeting with her, Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff.

There is heat between Kong and TNA over money also. Kong is said to be especially touchy when she sees the company spending money on new talents while claiming they can't afford to give raises to her and other Knockouts. There is assumption within TNA that Christy Hemme and Tara are paid well because of their careers in WWE but there's frustration over the pay that the rest of TNA's Knockouts receive.

Ted DiBiase on the ‘80s Wrestling Boom: “Back then it was a Rock-n-Roll Atmosphere”

Ted DiBiase said the WWE environment has improved drastically over the years. “Today, the business has changed, it’s much more corporate,” he said. “When you go back to the hotel, there is nobody. I don’t know if it’s a well-kept secret, or what. The WWE has changed so much now. They work four days a week, then they go home to their families.” Today, his son Ted Dibiase Jr., 27, is following in his father’s footsteps.

“The years I was in the WWE there were a number of guys who died from drug and alcohol abuse. So for years I preached to my boys that I’d support them in anything they’d want to do — but don’t even consider wrestling.”

So what has changed? Vince McMahon, owner of the WWE, has implemented strict random drug tests for all wrestlers.

“What that has built into the WWE is accountability. They have a three-strike rule,” DiBiase said. “The first time you test positive for anything it’s a 30-day suspension without pay. The second time it’s a 60-day suspension, (and) the third time you’re fired. Nobody is above the law, nobody.”...More?

New Name of ECW

According to pwinsider.com, the ECW on SyFy series will go forward as a brand under the name WWE NXT, with NXT standing for "Next Generation."

Apparently the show will be built around an entirely new cast of characters with the idea that WWE fans can see these characters develop and debut only on SyFy. Expect a lot of talents from WWE developmental to be called up. More details on the new WWE show should be made clear tonight.

So happy to be done with ECW. I never liked the original show and since the "new version" already features new talent, it needed to be changed.

Beth Phoenix Comments on her Royal Rumble Appearance

“Tonight was my night to step up and step out of the Divas division into a league of my own,” Beth said. “With every single obstacle that’s been put in front of me, I’ve not only reached my goals,” Beth boasted, “but I’ve far surpassed what everyone has ever expected from me.”

“Despite Chyna’s accomplishments [in the Rumble],” Beth said, “I eliminated The Great Khali. Seven-foot-three, 420 pounds. No small feat.”

“I am WWE’s Glamazon. Chyna was WWE’s Ninth Wonder of the World … mostly called so because people wondered whether she was a man or a woman. I often wonder this, myself. Chyna would have had a slight size advantage in her prime, but I’ll tell you what Chyna was missing and that was heart.”

"In the ring, toe-to-toe with me, Chyna doesn’t compare.”
