Interview with CM Punk

In wrestling circles, he's as marketable as they come right now. He's the WWE champion, and has been for more than 15 months now. He has penned the foreword for Marvel's Avengers vs. X-Men hardcover, which is due out next month.

He is the subject of the WWE's latest -- and arguably its best -- DVD documentary.
He is the cover boy for the company's next video game release, WWE 13, due out next week. He's the headliner for the company's next pay-per-view, Hell in a Cell, which happens Sunday.

He's been popping up on talk shows, radio shows, at Major League Baseball games, and everywhere in between. He is CM Punk. Inside wrestling, he bills himself as the best in the world. Given his marketability right now, that's hard to argue.

But perhaps more importantly, however, is his marketability as someone everyone can relate to.

In his DVD, CM Punk: Best in the World, he addresses being bullied as a kid, his complicated relationship with his family, struggling to find his niche and his love of comic books, video games and wrestling ... a lot of which many people can relate to...More?

WWE Champion CM Punk Pens Introduction To The Limited Edition Avengers Vs. X-Men Hardcover

December 29, 2011

CM Punk, Jill Thompson and Marvel Tag-Teaming in 2012?

CM Punk is currently on top of the wrestling world; he’s not only the current WWE champion, but he’s also one of the WWE’s most popular and most talented performers, both on the microphone and in the ring. So where do you go when you’ve conquered the squared circle? Movies? TV? Disneyland? In Punk’s case, it might be comics.

Punk is no stranger to comics, as he talks about them on Twitter and was the subject of one of Marvel’s Fightin’ Fanboys segments. He also sometimes quotes the Thing’s “It’s clobberin’ time!” on his way to the ring. Earlier today a series of tweets took the idea of Punk actually writing comics right to the top of Marvel Comics, ending with Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso saying, “…let’s make it happen.”

It started with a tweet from John M. Coker, who asked Beasts of Burden artist and wrestling superfan Jill Thompson if she had attempted to recruit Punk to a write a comic she would draw.

Both Punk and Thompson said they were up for it, and comics creator Scott Ziolko suggested a character at Marvel they could work on together (The Thing was a pro wrestler in his solo series in the '80s).

If the comic does eventually happen, Punk would join several other wrestlers, including Mick Foley, Kevin Nash and Raven, in making the jump from the ring to the comics page. Incidentally, Thompson also worked on several clothing designs for current World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan, so that’s two champions she’s been associated with in the past few weeks. So if you’re a WWE superstar looking for a push, forget Vicki Guerrero — you could do worse than aligning yourself with Thompson.

Comics & Wrestling: A Perfect Match

It's a known fact that when put together, comic books and wrestling aren't a tasty cocktail. While I'm sure it can be done in a worthwhile manner, things like the last round of WWE comics and the character-centric comics of the '90s haven't exactly inspired confidence in the partnership.

However, comic books and professional wrestling as industries and forms of entertainment actually share a lot more in common than one might expect...More?

Triple H is Thor, Or Should Be

Regardless of not being cast as Thor in the upcoming movie, this photo is definitive proof that Triple H is actually the son of Odin, big, muscled, blond, hammer, lightning, Thor!

Playing 'The Mighty Thor' in the new movie is Chris Hemsworth. If he looks familiar you may have seen him in the first five minutes of the last Star Trek movie. Or perhaps you're an Australian with a soap opera addiction, regardless of how you know who Chris is you probably never looked at him and thought; 'Whoa that guy looks just like Thor!'

Because he doesn't, Chris is a former daytime actor who looks like a Calvin Klein underwear model. Nothing about the dude makes me wonder if he carries a Mjolnir or smites his foes with lightning. Even after seeing him in his Thor getup I am less than convinced. Small hands, skinny forearms and airbrushed biceps do not a Norse god make.

Triple H deserves to play Thor and the producers would have saved money by hiring him because he can do his own stunts. Say what you want about the WWE but professional Wrestlers are highly trained stuntmen who are good at taking physical punishment and selling fake blows.

For the naysayers who say Triple H can't act I say so what? Thor isn't exactly spitting out poems in Old Swedish every other page. In fact most of what Thor does say is pretty direct in the comics, mostly consisting of single words and exclamation points...More?

Marvel Movie Re-Casting Call

Over the past decade, Marvel has spit out major motion pictures for nearly all of their most popular titles. We’ve seen most of our favorite characters leap from the page to the screen successfully played by actors who were seemingly born for the roles. But… they weren’t ideal. Some of the casting was ::sigh:: less than par. So I want a good ol’ fashioned “DO-OVER!” I want to turn back the hands of time and re-cast some of the poorly-cast roles in Marvel’s motion picture catalog.

Sabretooth

OK, keep in mind I’ve turned back the hands of time, so I’m at the first X-Men film. Despite the version and performance of Liev Shrieber in Wolverine: Origins, Singer went with a very Comic-Booky Sabretooth for the first installment of the series. I didn’t mind over-the-top comic book Sabretooth. To be honest, I liked that Singer kept the character looking like the Sabretooth of the comics. Only problem was they tapped into the wrestling world and gave the role to Daryl Karolat, aka Tyler Mane, instead of giving it to the wrestler they SHOULD’VE given it to.

Paul Levesque, aka WWE’s Triple H., is one of the wrestling industry’s biggest names, and he got there because he can do it all. Not only is Paul entertaining in the ring, but the guy has proved time and time again he can act. Aside from carrying his persona with the WWE, he’s made numerous guest appearance on TV as well as held some decent roles on the big screen and I think he’s JUST what Sabretooth needed. He’s got the size, the attitude, voice and, most importantly, the ability.

Who and Who Should Play Lobo in the Live Action Picture?

Ever since the mention of a Lobo live action film, there has been lot's of speculation regarding who should play the Last Czarnian. Well, this writer has his favorite. After much deliberation, it boils down to this; only a professional wrestler can play the Scourge of the Galaxy. There are many, many actors who could portray the Main Man, in attitude and facial features (think Ron Perlman), but couldn't possibly be in the physical condition (ergo; be ripped) it takes to play the Space-Dolphin Savior. SO, with that being said, who in the professional wrestling world could play the Lobotomizer? Like I stated earlier, I have my favorite, But lets list some of the possibilites.

#1)The Undertaker
#2)Kevin Nash
#3)Dave Batista
#4)Mike Knox or Kane or Abyss

#5 and my personal favorite to play Lobo in the live-action film..............)
Triple H: Paul Levesque has the physique, the size (6'-4"), and most importantly the face!!! Any self-respecting Lobo fan can admit that Bisley's Lobo is probably the best drawn. (although a case can be made for Martin Emonds in my opinion). The first few pages of Lobo's Back will give anybody wishing to see what I mean a perfect example of why Trips would be great for this role. You can also look at his acting, you cannot be successful in Pro Wrestling if you can't act (or "talk" as it may be). The character of Triple H has the persona, and the comedy it would take to pull this off. And the intensity in which Triple H is portrayed would do nothing but help this particular role of "The Baddest Man in the Galaxy"...More?
