Matt Riddle Thinks NXT Has Potential To Be WWE'S Top Brand

TMZ Sports recently interviewed Matt Riddle. "The King of Bros" compared NXT to WWE's main roster and the possibility of NXT rising to the top of the company food chain in the future. Highlights and video are below.

NXT:

“I think we’re just different, and I know that’s easy to say. But we’re different, we’re new, we’re fresh, and we’re not the same watered down child’s product that WWE has kind of turned into a lot. And when people watch us — even though it’s scripted a lot of the time — it’s more real. It’s more believable.”

Moving To Main Roster:

“You know, funny enough, I was thinking about that the other day, and I want to get to the main roster. But then I was thinking, ‘Well, maybe I’m thinking about it wrong’ because NXT is so hot. Maybe we should stay and try to make it bigger than RAW and SmackDown, and just make it one—like the big guy, you know, which isn’t impossible I don’t think.”

NXT Being On Top Of WWE:

“The big thing is Vince [McMahon] owns RAW, SmackDown— he owns everything, and those are his babies. He’s had them forever. So, I think the probability of NXT taking over at that level is probably hard. But at the same time, I don’t see it too far from the future with us being on the same playing field as RAW and SmackDown.”

Triple H Says Some Talent Might Stay In NXT Without Going To WWE Main Roster

As reported here earlier today, Triple H was in London celebrating the grand opening of the new WWE Performance Center UK. As seen above, Inside The Ropes attended the event and caught an in-depth interview with Triple H where they asked him about his future aspirations concerning the NXT and NXT UK talent. Triple H confirmed that certain NXT UK stars will indeed make the eventual transition to RAW or SmackDown, but along with that, certain stars will begin to rotate back through the various developmental territories they continue to establish.

"There are some talent here, that you might see come from the UK, that might move straight to RAW or SmackDown," Triple H explained. "I think right now there's sort of this perceived system of where it's kinda - 1. RAW, 2. SmackDown, 3. NXT, 4. NXT UK. I don't believe that, I believe that talent are talent and I believe they will sit where they sit, and I believe you'll see talent over the next few years start coming up to Raw and SmackDown. And I think you'll see them move back over in to NXT, or come back in to the NXT UK system. I think talent will begin to evolve and rotate through territories, so to speak."

Triple H believes that some performers have reached their plateau of success rotating through the NXT developmental territories, and hopes to give those individuals successful, meaningful careers without them ever having to transition to the cable network programs.

"I think there will be some talent that will be incredibly successful, will be global names, will be global, household names," Triple H said, "that will probably never leave that NXT system because that's their home base and that's where they fit, and they'll have incredibly successful, meaningful careers. And probably over those careers they'll gravitate through different locations within the globe, maybe without never being on RAW or SmackDown, but that not being any lesser to their careers."

Triple H also discussed the importance of reinventing a character when the performer feels it's the necessary action to take, saying that it's no different than decades ago, when wrestlers would travel to a new territory and present their revamped character to an audience.

"I think it depends on the talent and the moment and I think it's no different than it was if you go back, 30 - 40 years, into the territory system in the US. No different," Triple H said. "You left one place, you went someplace else, sometimes you reinvented because you thought, 'What I'm doing is good, but here, I want to do something different, I want to make it something more.' And you reinvent, and you become something different."

Vince McMahon And Triple H: The Fans Are Now The Authority

As promised, Vince McMahon graced Monday Night RAW with his presence tonight. He opened by saying that he can no longer do the show all by himself, and so he brought out his daughter, Stephanie McMahon, her husband, Triple H, and his son, Shane McMahon.

Stephanie opened by saying that “they haven’t been doing a good job lately” and that they haven’t been listening to the audience. However, that it was all going to change. “The days of absentee management is over,” said Triple H. “The four of us will be taking back Monday Night RAW.” Shane then went on to echo the same sentiment for SmackDown.

“We’re going to give fans what they want,” stated Triple H. “Something new. Something fresh. In the coming months you’ll be seeing new faces, fresh match-ups, and more of what you want. You are the authority.”

Roman Reigns relinquishes the Universal Title to fight against Leukemia

In the opening moments of Raw, Roman Reigns emerged to announce that he had been living with leukemia for 11 years and the disease's return would force him to relinquish the Universal Championship and take a leave of absence from WWE.

Dressed in street clothes, The Big Dog mingled briefly with fans at ringside before dropping the persona of Roman Reigns to address the WWE Universe as Joe and detail his history of living with leukemia. In an emotional but optimistic address, Reigns recounted his initial diagnosis and remission in late 2008 and thanked the WWE Universe for making his dreams come true. He said he was going to go home to focus on his family and health, but he made one thing clear on the way out: “This is by no means a retirement speech.”

Speaking of the “faith” that had carried him through his life, Reigns promised the WWE Universe that he would return to “swing for the fences” at whatever curveballs life threw at him, with a final signoff before a tearful embrace with The Shield atop the ramp: “I will beat this, and I will be back, so you will see me very, very soon.”

Jerry Lawler Talks ‘PC’ WWE, ‘Puppies,’ & The Reason He Probably Isn’t On WWE TV Anymore

The latest Dinner with the King features WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler addressing a live crowd at Starrcast during All In weekend.

A fan commented on how he associates Lawler with the word ‘puppies’ and Lawler then directly addressed that:

“The thing with the puppies, I did not coin the phrase. I was not the first one to say the phrase on WWE TV; but, because like you said I am so associated with that word puppies, most people think that way. That is probably the reason I’m not on TV anymore and I mean that seriously because they [WWE] went so politically correct. It’s not necessarily PG because they’re not PG. They’re further south than PG. They’re PC. They’re so politically correct to a fault and especially like they got so right now into – starting with the Revolution – now it’s all about empowering women and that’s a big political correct thing these days and everything, so WWE jumped right on that, so it’s about empowering women. They actually came to us and said, ‘Do not ever say that women are sexy or that they’re good looking or that they’re beautiful. You must treat them exactly like you would a male athlete. You could say that they are powerful, they’re strong, they’re athletic, all this stuff; but, nothing that would be considered sexist at all.”

Lawler then talks about the RAW 25th Anniversary Show when he let the word ‘puppies’ slip early on during the historic live broadcast,

“This is like early on the show and I said, ‘JR [Jim Ross], it’s so nice to be here tonight and we’re gonna go back in time or something and I might even say puppies tonight.’ Immediately I hear [Vince McMahon] in my earphone (grunts), ‘Let’s stay away from that tonight.’ That was the last time it was ever said on there.”

Triple H Comments On Possibility Of Main Roster Superstars Being Moved To NXT

Triple H was asked about the possibility of NXT becoming a part of an upcoming Superstar Shake-Up and main roster names coming to NXT. Here is what he had to say:

On NXT Being Part of The Superstar Shake-Up:

“I guess in some ways it is,” Triple H replied. “Because usually when you do some kind of Shake-Up somebody gets called up. So I end up losing some NXT talent.”

On Main Roster Stars Being Moved to NXT:

“I think now when you look back at the roster over the last few years and you look at the main roster. I think the number is something like 80% or so of the main roster came out of NXT. So there are a lot of talent there that wouldn’t even be a stretch to come into NXT if they were on the main roster and came back to NXT. It wouldn’t be a big stretch — and I think when you’ve seen, you know the last few weeks every now and then in an effort to give people surprises and constantly keep things fresh we’ve had live events where we brought The Revival on and we’ve had live events where we brought Tyler Breeze on. Those kinds of surprises and shocks — people love it — it’s like going home in a way. So I do think you could see that happen very easily and I don’t think it would be a stretch for people to consider that being a possibility.”

Triple H Handles Criticism Of WWE's Main Roster When Asked If He Could Give It An 'NXT Approach'

Triple H performs his duties as WWE's Vice President of Talent, Live Events & Creative which means he wears many hats in WWE. During a recent conference call, Paul Levesque was actually questioned about WWE's main roster storylines and how he would change things if given the opportunity.

A caller prefaced his question by saying he was asking "as a fan," and he was "burned out" by the WWE main roster. While praising NXT storylines for their crispness, he said Raw and SmackDown are often left "burning the midnight oil" for him personally. He noted that he wasn't looking forward to SummerSlam, and only for Takeover.

Triple H had a diplomatic reply when he was finally asked if he wished that he could take control of the main roster with an "NXT approach."

"I also wish I could fly and breath underwater," Triple H replied. "Dude, I wasn't sure if you were going to ask me a question or you were making a statement about your displeasure.

"Everybody has opinions on things and positive/negative that's the beauty in what we do and people are free to express those opinions. I'm happy that you like NXT and I'm happy you're looking forward to that show. You know some people dislike some things, there are other people who dislike what we do in NXT and there are people that like what we do there. Everybody's got an opinion and the great thing for us is no matter what it is, positive/negative, we don't have a shy fan base that is afraid to let us know.

"They will let us know and whether we decide to take that message immediately or whether it takes us a little bit to hear it, eventually we hear you. So you know, it is what it is but if people dislike something or like something that's what their voice is for and we encourage that for sure."

This Week's WWE RAW Draws Lowest Viewership In History

Monday's WWE RAW, featuring the final red brand hype for Extreme Rules with Drew McIntyre vs. Seth Rollins in the main event, drew 2.470 million viewers. This is down 8.8% from last week's 2.707 million viewers and a new viewership low for 2018. This is also the lowest RAW viewership in history, coming in under the 2.478 million viewers from the September 26th, 2016 episode, which went up against the Trump - Clinton Presidential Debate and Monday Night Football.

For this week's show, the first hour drew 2.582 million viewers (last week's hour 1 - 2.641 million), the second hour drew 2.508 million viewers (last week's hour 2 - 2.822 million) and the final hour drew 2.320 million viewers (last week's hour 3 - 2.658 million).

RAW was #4 for the night in viewership on cable, behind Hannity, Tucker Carlson Tonight and The Ingraham Angle. RAW was #2 in the 18-49 demographic for the second week in a row, behind Love & Hip-Hop.

Hannity topped the night in viewership on cable TV with 5.817 million viewers. The Bachelorette drew 5.677 million viewers on broadcast TV in the 8pm hour while MOM drew 3.908 million viewers on broadcast TV, also in the 8pm hour, and American Ninja Warrior drew 4.999 million viewers in the 8pm hour.

Why Fox Was Attracted To WWE, What Happened With The ESPN - WWE Negotiations, More On TV Deals

Sports Business Daily has a new article looking at how WWE's new deal with Fox marked the end of more than two years of negotiations among TV networks looking to land deals with WWE and the UFC. The article also looks at how two of the top entertainment agencies went head-to-head for their clients - Endeavor worked the five-year $1.5 billion deal between UFC & ESPN while Creative Artists Agency (CAA) crafted the $2.34 billion deal between WWE and NBCUniversal & Fox. Below are a few notes from the piece:

* While considering a future with or without UFC, Fox started looking at other sports content to fill nights on its broadcast network as part of a new strategy that focused on live programming in primetime. It sounds like Fox first started looking at WWE some time in 2017 and Fox insiders were attracted to the consistently high ratings & passionate fanbase that WWE has.

* WWE's negotiation period with NBCU ran until mid-May of this year but officials had already been making the rounds to get to know other TV executives through a series of "get-to-know-you meetings. The networks had one significant issue - Endeavor owns UFC and Endeavor's Ari Emanuel is friends with Vince McMahon, who asked Ari to represent WWE during media talks. Networks did not feel comfortable negotiating with the same person who was working on behalf of two competing sports brands. This was seen as a conflict of interest and networks made it clear to WWE officials. WWE hired CAA, a top rival of Endeavor, soon after a WWE show in Los Angeles during the spring of 2017 where Fox Sports President Eric Shanks pulled Vince to the side to point out the conflict of interest. Fox pushing for the change annoyed Ari and indicated that UFC & Fox would have trouble coming to a deal.

* Stephanie McMahon, Triple H, Co-President George Barrios and Co-President Michelle Wilson met with ESPN executives 4 times from December 2017 through the spring. ESPN had upped their coverage of WWE and was receptive to talks but it was soon clear that a deal was not going to be reached. The issue between ESPN and WWE came down to scheduling as RAW & SmackDown are produced every week and ESPN can't afford to give any sport 52 weeks in a year.

* ESPN did consider WWE programming for their ESPN+ streaming service but that would have directly competed with the WWE Network.

* WWE soon targeted Fox and made it clear they were interested. Fox did the same. Shanks and other Fox executives were shown on camera during a May 2017 RAW show from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. WWE was still in the exclusive window with NBCU, which ran until mid-May, but Stephanie, Triple H and other WWE executives made a point to visit the Fox lot for an informal meet & greet. WWE told Fox executives then that they could not discuss terms of a potential deal until NBC's exclusive window closed but both sides were interested.

* Bonnie Hammer, a longtime friend of WWE's and chairman of the NBCU cable entertainment group, was leading the renewal talks with WWE. Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBC Broadcasting & Sports, oversees all major sports rights negotiations for NBCU but they view WWE as an entertainment property so Hammer led the talks while he was on hand to participate in strategy sessions and offer advice. NBCU officials knew Fox was interested in WWE but they believed WWE ultimately wanted to stay on the USA Network. They also believed WWE fans wanted consistency as they knew where they could go to see RAW on Mondays and SmackDown on Tuesdays.

* WWE had been averaging $130 million per year for each show in previous deals and that figure was considered well below the market value by network executives. WWE officials knew they were negotiating from a strong position and decided to split their TV package in two. CAA told Hammer they wanted $265 million per year for RAW and $200 million per year for SmackDown - a 358% increase. NBCU's exclusive window closed on May 16th and they informed WWE they would take RAW for $265 million but they would not renew SmackDown. The next day WWE executives visited the Fox offices in New York City for the meeting that included Rupert Murdoch. The $205 million per year deal that would move the blue brand back to Fridays was settled on that day as both sides quickly realized they were close to an agreement. WWE signed the five-year SmackDown deal with Fox and renewed a five-year RAW deal with NBCU for USA.

Corey Graves Says Triple H Tipped Him Off That Graves' Wrestling Career Was Over

Corey Graves revealed that Triple H tipped him off that Graves would not be cleared to wrestle again, before the officially scheduled meeting where WWE management would tell him the news.

Graves, who retired from in-ring action in 2014 due to concussions and then made a successful transition to commentary for WWE, discussed the circumstances surrounding the end of his wrestling career during an appearance on a recent episode of E&C's Podcast of Awesomeness with Edge and Christian.

"Hunter, to his credit—at the time I hated him for it—a few days earlier kind of gave me a head up in the nicest way he possibly could. I got the initial heartbreak out of the way that day," Graves recalled.

The official meeting happened prior to an NXT taping at Full Sail University, at which Graves was told WWE doctors would not clear him to return to the ring after multiple concussions, he quickly shifted gears determined to find a new role with the company, saying:

"I imagine it must be what people feel like at any job that they put their time into and have a happiness in their life. Even being hurt and banged up and frustrated in NXT … I was still getting paid by WWE to wrestle. It was literally a dream job. So to have that dashed in such a quick period of time, it was hard to deal with but I also looked at it as, I've got a family to take care of. I'm still here. I don't think they're mad at me, I didn't do anything wrong, I didn't screw up. This is a really unfortunate thing. I just started doing anything and everything I could. ... The Monday following, I started working with the guys on production and learning how to play music at live events. I started paying my dues all over again from the ground up. Before the shows, I was running the cables under the ring for the speakers at the NXT live events. ... It was desperation, it was fear but at least if I'm doing nothing but production here [at NXT], I'm still with WWE."

Graves then found his niche on commentary and now finds himself commentating both Raw and Smackdown every week -- the only WWE broadcaster currently pulling that double duty.

Triple H Talks to Rolling Stone About Upcoming "Raw 25"

WWE Chief Operating Officer and 14-time World Champion Paul "Triple H" Levesque recently spoke to Rolling Stone about the 25th Anniversary of Monday Night Raw.
The following comes from RollingStone.com:
As a viewer, the buzz for this anniversary show feels more intense than even the 1,000th episode build. Is that the vibe behind the scenes?
For whatever reason, 25 years on the air of episodic television, storylines, characters, ebbs and flows but yet staying in that number-one [slot] on cable television… it's hard not to look at that and go, "Really?" I think that's what the palpable energy is for everyone here, whether that be in the office or for the talent. Some of our talent weren't even old enough to be watching when Raw started on the air.
What's been the biggest logistical nightmare of pulling this off?
When you take 25 years of memorable moments and characters, trying to boil that down to a three-hour Raw episode being simulcast and in two places, how do you whittle that down to certain people and times and events? I was doing an interview the other day, and they put out a list so I could refresh my memory, and it was pages and pages of these moments. As I'm going through them, "Oh my god, that was the coolest thing ever. That was the coolest thing ever. That was even cooler." And then there are the ones that involve me. But there are so many others, and that's been the hardest thing – not forgetting stuff. You can't get everybody, and you're going to get a lot of people who go, "I can't believe they didn't do this and talk about that." It's 25 years. You just can't do it all. I can tell you what it will be: It will be one hell of a celebration.
How do you weight the expectations of talent versus those of the fans?
Talent have certain expectations of things, and then there' what the WWE universe is looking for and wants, and that's who we're creating this show for. It's their show. That's been the secret sauce for 25 years – our fanbase and the show that encourages them to be a part of it. It all started with Raw and went from there, so this is for them. This is in celebration of them. If you said, "What's the hardest thing in this?" it would be getting anything done, because it's going to be like old home day for all these talent who haven't seen each other. And once you get wrestlers telling stories its over. We'll all be telling stories all day long and putting ourselves over. At some point, I gotta remember, "I've got a show to make here."
The fans love feeling like they're experiencing that vicariously.
Yeah, and I also think it's that wink and nod to yourself of things that we did and being able to talk about them now and live in that moment, and you're seeing a different side of a lot of people.
Is it bittersweet that there are Raw alum who've passed on and can't be present for this?
Boy, if you're gonna make a list of the people who aren't here who can't be a part of this, it's a fairly long list. I wish they were, but it's been 25 years, so people who had a big contribution unfortunately are no longer here. But no different than anything else in life, the celebration is for living and now. It's the excitement for what the people who are here now have accomplished. It doesn't mean that the other people didn't contribute in dramatic ways. Again, 25 years, we're gonna miss stuff, and I wish everybody could participate in it and celebrate with us, but it just can't be.
This how will probably also give perspective about just how remarkable it is for any talent – whether fans love them or not – to endure on Raw for years.
Absolutely. Shawn Michaels was in the first one! We were on a panel, and Miz was talking about how Shawn was one of his heroes and now he gets to work with him now and then and make movies with him and do stuff in the ring with him. That's incredible. Name characters in anything that have that kind of longevity.
The promotion for this has also repeatedly shouted out how long-running Raw has been. Do you feel like you have to make your own noise about that?
We have to. Everybody else doesn't make the noise for us in some ways. I think WWE gets lumped into, "We're not fish, we're not fowl." So is it a sport? Is it theater? Is it a television show? You get in this weird mix, and they don't know where to place it, so it gets overlooked. But I don't care how you break it down. Twenty-five years on weekly television, most of which [has been] live. It's an unbelievable amount of television and content and characters that have in some instances shaped peoples lives. I can't tell you – it's the biggest honor of what you do – how many people come up to you on a daily basis from our generation and go, "Hey man, thank you for making my childhood so cool" or something like that. I look back on my childhood and [Ric] Flair and Dusty [Rhodes] and those guys and feel the same way, so I understand what they're saying. And to do that with that level of longevity and not go off the air while everybody else was like, "Yeah, it's just Raw." And we just kept doing it. It's hard to not say it's an incredible accomplishment, whether we have to toot our own horn for it or not.
So when you wake up the morning after, is it, "OK, now we have to figure out how this lasts another 25 years"?
Dude, that's every week. A year ago, Vince [McMahon] was at WrestleMania, and WrestleMania got done, and he took his headset off, took a deep breath and was like, "Man, that was good." And one of our writers walked over to him and handed him the script for Monday Night Raw. He goes, "That's it? That's my offseason? Here we go." And that is what we do. Tuesday morning when we wake up, that will be the start of the next 25 years.
